We truly dont know a whole lot about this character called Skull Knight. If you want to be a critic, we dont even know his real name, as he is never referred to by any other name than Skulled Horseman. But this is the speculations page, and i am allowed to add things that we have seen through the cracks, and can come up with very plausible origins for this mystery of a character.

    1000 Years ago, there was a man named Gaiseric who fought many wars for one dream: to unite the world under an empire. Gaiseric was known for his vicious and fierce battle tactics, and more importantly, the Skull Helmet that he wore in battle. and finally he did. Gaiseric united half the world under the name of the Midland Empire. 1000 years ago, from what we know, things were much like Roman times, the architecture, the clothing, so consider Gaiseric's rule, a golden age perhaps, a Roman empire.

But something happened.

-As told by Charlotte ( vol 10 )-

5 angels came down from the heavens and punished Gaiseric and his empire because it had grown out of control.
Caska remarks that she heard the same story but it was with 4 angels, not 5.

:::That is the known history of Emporer Gaiseric:::
:::And so, we flash forward 1000 years later, to vol 9:::

Gatts has left the hawks after the successful duel against Griffith. On one of those nights alone by a camp fire, Skull Knight first appears to Gatts. Gatts says that he feels like he did when he fought Zodd, in the presence of immense power...Skull Knight tells Hatts that a great violence is near. And that when he, his friends, the heavenly fleshless beings of flesh (God Hand), and their future king arrive in the distant lands, then great suffering will be upon them. Skull knight also mentions that Gatts can survive this, since he is someone that knows death quite well, since Gatts was born from a dead body in the mud. He told him that to struggle is the only way to confront death..."Only the one who rises up with a broken sword in his hand can"... then leaves.

:::Flash forward to just outside the eclipse ( vol 13 ):::

Rickert watches as Zodd and the Skull Knight face off to duel.   ( <- observe  )

Zodd: I knew youd be here, you have opposed us for one thousand years

SK: So it is you that has been commanded as the Gate Keeper of this place, undead thing.

Zodd: Feh, that sort of affair doesnt interest me. I am here with my own business, seeking the strong, you should know that, old rival.

SK: So...I supose that this encounter too is, as Void would say, part of the causality principle...Fine! I shall entrust my life to this sword.   < ---observe!

Zodd was there technically, to protect God Hands ceremony, as he is apparently the master of the servants (or apostles) of God Hand.  But in his own words, he was there to simply 'seek the strong'. And to perhaps rumble with the Skull Knight, his 'old rival' ...Skull Knight mentions the 'casualty principle' the underlying order of events set forth by Idea. However, as Slan says at the end of the eclipse "This is merely one of the paths fate has chosen of the many possibilities..." Casusality is now revealed to have multiple paths. This particular encounter between was preordained so that SK could take Gatts and Caska away should they survive. Thats my take on it anyway, but regardless, Skull Knight was there initally, for revenge.

:::Flash to the end of the eclipse, just after femto is done with caska ( vol 13 ):::

Skull Knight busts into the eclipse through the apparition of the sun, and instantly swings for void, they lock eyes just before SK's blow comes in. But now is not the fated time of Voids fall, and Skull Knight knows it.

:::End of Skull Knight history:::
Onward to speculations of skull knight (pg2)...
