Movies, TV, Books & Music / Re: Twin Peaks Returns
« on: November 04, 2017, 05:53:57 PM »
Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier came out this week and it popery ties up Annieīs and to a certain degree Audreyīs story. A lot of the info within can be pieced together from S03 but this one is a sequel to it, unlike Mark Frostīs previous and much more labyrinthian The Secret History of Twin Peaks. I would be surprised if S03 (9/10) will be the very final word on the show but this is a good ending point.

The Alt-Right (if that is the right term) is apparently trying to hijack the fan base and i canīt say that i am happy about all the fake drama Star Trek Discovery is getting. The pilot was a bit too in media-res and the lack of development for the charters who were only in ep.1+2 is noticeable but ep.2 was already a step up. Ep.3 then completely comes together and is not only great Sci-Fi itīs also immortally recognizable as Trek. Sure, it has the DS9 grit turned to 11 but that was the best one anyway. Who knows if it needs the TV-MA on a creative level but the gore sure looked stylish.

The Orville is further rubbish yet the same drama STD is getting is trying to lift it up as "real" Trek. Yeah whatever, the ratings have spoken.

Here is sales data for the show, of the final volume too: 577 Blu Ray copies in the first week... with the promise of getting an even 600 in the second week, i guess.
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2017-09-26/japan-animation-blu-ray-disc-ranking-september-18-24/.121870

I would love to know how much money has been lost with animated Berserk this decade. Better luck in the next.

I actually met about 10 Berserk readers in RL, but itīs not that unusual to meet comic/anime fans. I introduced most to Berserk myself, so they donīt count. One sticks out though, as a 10 years younger girl who goes to the same university as me (i need a degree for my job, thatīs why i am currently a student) recognized my Beherit pendant during a train ride. We immediately bonded over or hate for the new anime.
Buy your Berserk bling today and meet hot younger women :ganishka: ! Itīs the Miura meet cute guarantee.

A LOT of my fellow students are into comics and so on. Another girl even has Aceīs cross from One Piece as a tattoo but that what happens if you sign up for library science.  I even got to organize an interview with an editor for Carlsen Comics. They are Germanyīs biggest comic publisher and they also have the Jump license here in Germany. Cool stuff. In summary: Reconsider your career paths if you want to meet more people like you outside of reddit and co.

Berserk Miscellaneous / Re: Berserk: The Flame Dragon Knight novel
« on: July 16, 2017, 06:48:04 PM »
Aaz already confirmed my initial question if this is a LN or not, as Fukami wrote wrote such in the past. His confirmation basically killed any last interest for me. A few good LNs do exist (Baccano) but they are ultimately a very cheap way to start a franchise, as the fluffy conversation style plots can easily be turned into manga/anime scripts. Someone would have turned this one into an OVA if the anime didnīt bomb so hard is my guess.

The utterly talentless Makoto Fukami is the much harder strike No.2. I frankly despise him but i will admit that his middling anime work is better than his soft-core manga porn. Amazon.jp reviews even seem to be optimistic enough, with the LN being deemed a breezy yet explicit done-in-one read. One reviewer even called the prose appropriate for elementary school readers, if it wasnīt for all the sex and gore :ganishka: . Itīs kinda nice that the spin-off turned out to be harmless in the end!
I donīt want more, especially if we canīt get Neo Falcon one-of manga by YAīs Shizuya Wazarai or Kouji Mori. Such would get an immediate approval from me, as long as Miura gets proper story credit.
Or a "real" book and Berserk now has its first entry, outside of merch, that doesnīt target (young) adults. An interesting decision, yet this is hardly the first child inappropriate LN and the pachinko machine targets way older people than the manga, so all male markets are now served by YA. Insert Space Balls joke about merch [here].

I can live with the LN being apocryphal, as the mostly dreadful Star Wars EU used to be, or part of canon, even if the 3rd act seems a bit… off, as this is just a random Grunbeld story. His dead friends could be shown or be hinted at in letīs say a dying moment in the manga. The Dreamcast Mandragora had a cameo too for example. Weīll soon see where we will end up regarding spin-offs but Miura brought his A game for the illustrations. These are the best looking Berserk splash pages pages since Vol.34. They certainly lessen the blow.

I do have something final to say. I looked up where the anime exactly ended, to set a proper note on MU (Vol. 29 ep.249), and these madmen adapted 6 manga eps. this week.
Thatīs 120 pages in a 20 minute segment. No wonder that none of it worked! A 3rd act Death Note ep. and Bokuranoīs pilot once (competently) adapted about 200 uninterrupted pages in such an amount of time but GEMBAīs "zeal" still needs to be noted.

Last ep. would have further needed to introduce Daiba but we certainly know why they skipped him. Azanīs return also remains MIA, which makes zero sense, but the duck segment made in on the air :???: . They even had the pumpkin salesman attack Isidro during a truly bewilder montage, yet the anime never featured his first appearance. This just shows how little the writers and directors understood the manga. The studio(s) adapted a cameo joke yet look what ended up on the cutting room floor. Berserk 2012-17 in a nutshell but S02 deserves a special place in anime hell.
I held on till the end and my reward was seeing things get worse :daiba:

"The Story Continues"... just not in the anime, as S01E12 had VERY a different stinger at the end. It blatantly said, "Spring 2017: The next Arc Arrives" with a bit of teaser footage. None of that can be found here, so i am free of my curse. No more anime :ubik: . At least in form of TV seasons or films, as they could still pull a final OVA. The production company somehow released a Terra Formars OVA last month that jumped by multiples volumes ahead in the story. The madmen. PSX graphics Sea God may still be upon us and this ep. indeed featured Griffith on a cliff as one of the very final images.

My takeaways from the final ep. are these: How did they managed to fail at animating a caricature of a duck? Bonebeard should be the worst executed/voiced pirate i ever saw in animation. And someone at the studio legitimately thinks that the most important part of an episode must be hidden behind credits, as they now did it multiples times. 3/10 for this series finale and a 2/10 for S02.

Edit: Oh wait. The Grunbeld novel is written by the anime head writer. I will lol pretty hard if it gets adapted as a final gift to the fans (nice art on the pages by Miura btw).

This weekīs ep. was more coherent that the last, at least in the first half, so a 3/10 is itīs reward.
I am back for something else though, even if Walter has the same hunch. I am putting in writing that the gang will just board the Seahorse after they meet Sonia. Roderick may have a cameo as the captain, or not, but the 2012 promise of adapting on the whole series (to that point), at least Gutīs side, will be complete then. No loosing face or anything for the producers, as they gave us what we all wanted! …right :judo:? Musou didnīt give a shit about establishing the Kushan forces, or Griffith īs side either (why was Laban even in No.22?) and our favorite mystery boy was missing too.
If the superior told game, even in the rushed 2nd half, canīt bother to properly “earn” the boat, then why should this anime?

We may lastly get Griffith on the cliff staring down Guts during the credits, with text over the scene. Because thatīs how you adapt key scenes :troll: .

No. 20 was the 2nd worst ep. the show ever had, so i couldnīt even bother to comment. I will admit that this ep. told itīs story slightly better but it might be the most awkward looking yet. Itīs the most unfinished too. YouTube 3D animation tutorials done by 1 person look much much better! Meaning that the end of our odyssey is turning out to be quite grueling. Thank god that the next episode might be a recap, as even anime only viewers will then fully realize what sort of product was offered to them. A vapid final try at a crash grab with no redeeming values. I will also be able to skip another 20 minutes in anime hell. 2/10 for both and "S02" is now officially worse than S01 :magni: .

PS: Poor :beast: . Your abysmal VA was the cherry on this shit Sunday. At least they skipped using Hai Yo, as No. 20 had the worst use to date yet.

Movies, TV, Books & Music / Re: Twin Peaks Returns
« on: May 22, 2017, 06:44:56 PM »
Twin Peaks: The Return came back in style! In a giant 4 hour chunk too and i also just found out that Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces exists. It and certainly the new season finally explain what the controversial prequel film was about. The new show is basically a 2nd and more... strictured (?) Fire Walk With Me, as it answers how the inbred child of Eraser Head, Lost Highway and Inland Empire would look like. S03 is that fucking wild and from nearly minute one too! Undeniably the most niche big budget show of ALL time and certainly the most frightening. Just show anyone the scene of Cooper being eaten by an electricity socket or that strobe light tree with a heart for a "head" talking backwards. They will never talk to you again :ganishka: . The unsettling gore is though the roof too.

Long story short. David Lynch is about to create another masterpiece, especially if i consider that the 4th episode then suddenly takes a time out to recreate the 1990/91 original, before veering back into relentless psychological horror in the last 10 minutes. So go back to the classic + film, if you never saw it. Even if S02 historically shat the bed after solving the big mystery. It ended strong though.
Here is a refresher: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxUC8QH8miU
Get the 3 hard canon books too (donīt ask me which one is the craziest, but The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer is a hard NC-17) and strap yourself in for 18 hours of old man David Lynch without ANY restrain + a final book. Unless someone at Showtime decides to fund these mad men again.

11
Can someone explain to me how the "+tax" thing works, as these are mostly factored into what you buy here in Germany. How much more will one realistically pay here. Just curious.
"Only" 400 $ for 4 hours of content is such a steal after after all :troll: . (Most anime sadly cost this much though, just spread over more releases.)

I prefer the shot of the armored Guts.

@Walter Modern day Deadpool (post Joe Kelly) and the Liefeld version have almost no relation. The way the hack is trying to pass the work of someone else as his own is a new low for him.

I have been filling the gaps in the works of my favorite directors, after having 1 year being taken over by seeing every film on the Imdb top 250 list since the inception in 1996. The first year is.... rough but the rest of the 300-400 films grind was rewarding. I now need more than 1 hand to name good Bollywood films! The top 2 films i would have never seen that stood out to me were the Indian Rang De Basanti and the Serbian Underground. Back to my chronologic Orson Welles marathon. Good god did he peak early. His last film is even a made for German tv making-of of Othello [1951] :???: .
That doc is somehow his 3rd best film too. Wellesī infamous struggles after his 1941 masterpiece ended with him becoming Charles Foster Kane himself in the end. Kinda depressing.

PS: Guardians 2 is solid 8/10. Bloated and very safe but Ego is a rare good MCU film villain. See, i like both DC and Marvel... Still a shame that the quite serious Marvel space comic line canīt branch out of the comedy camp. Modern comic Drax would have been a delight to see on screen.

13
I like American Gods more than the novel as of now, due to the Hannbal-esque style, and Better Call Saul slowed down (even more) in S03. Itīs still a quality show, and a rare good prequel, but this season is slightly going in circles. Arrow S05 also pulled the usual trick of falling apart in the 3rd act at this point. S05 is 100% the last for me, no matter how many beloved 80s charters they surprising get right. Still a better ending point than whatever i watched last season. Flash is also starting to struggle, while the other 2 CW shows are dead to me. Outside of the Superman return in the Supergirl season finale. Tyler Hoechlin ainīt no Reeve or Cavill but what a surprise after the CW travesty called Smallville. I would watch a spin- off with him.

My random recombination is the 90s Highlander show i just finished. Itīs all on Youtube. S01 takes till ep.13 to get good and S06 is 60% rubbish (the middle) but the meaty core of the show is THE Highlander sequel i always wanted. The overall arc is quite bleak too. The directorīs cut of the anime film (yep) is also fine and i wish Mr. John Wick luck with the reboot.

I was streaming Berserk Musou (6/10 - a reasonable return on my 29€) from the PS4 to my Vita and put on the new ep. when i saw that it came out without dropping the handheld.
Grinding for a trophy held my attention more than the show! This is where i am now, my favorite arc reduced to this. No. 19 was thus mostly an audio drama for me. Which was the way to go this week,
as the director of this ep. butchered about every camera placement he could. In an action episode :rickert: ! Some of the magic bits were fine though and the acting of Schierkeīs VA is quite something. I lastly let the OP and ED run for once and noticed that the vocals of the OP are really good! The rest though.... eh. 4/10

The preview incudes the iconic shot of Slan demasculated Guts. So the pacing is just sad at this point. My 2nd favorite scene (after the culmination of the Eclipse) turned to a pupet show farce on fast forward.

@jackson_hurley Hellsing Ultimate (2006-12) technically went though 3 animation studios but the ability to sell viable international rights and the cap of only 10 episodes made the producers push though till the end. The important factor, besides the reasonable market interest, was that the producers stayed the same. These switched quite a lot from the films to the 2016 show for Berserk though.
I also noticed that there is no "Berserk committee", or whatever, being credited / named anywhere. These usually form when someone wants to franchise out a property long form and in multiple mediums.
We got a 3 films, 2 seasons, 1 game, new toy lines, a guide book, a (light?) novel and even a pachinko machine since 2012. Hakusensha is certainly trying to raise the profile of Berserk, as the novel will target teens (if it is indeed a LN) and the pachinko demographic goes for folks over 50. Thatīs quite a net but the end result feels like watching a friend starting up prostitution :schnoz: .

No one seems to be ruining the asylum. We still got the manga BUT someone needs to put a foot down regarding quality control soon, or they will commission a dakimakura ("hug pillow") line if this goes on. But hey, One Piece got official mouse pads with breast and Eva even seized the lingerie market! Who knows...

Movies, TV, Books & Music / Re: What are you reading?

Thrawn by Timothy Zahn. Itīs his best book and the 2nd best new canon Star Wars novel after Tarkin. The quality difference with most of the new stuff and all that de-canonized Legacy rubbish is night and day. The no nonsense military narratives in my 2 recommendations even reminded me of Robert A. Heinlein. The highest prase i can give and books are my job.
Just stay away from the often ridiculed Aftermath trilogy, as even i didnīt bother with slogging though all of that (canonically important) mess, and go for one with the most appealing dust cover blurb.
You will likely pick a winner and the Marvel comic line is another keeper. Especially art wise. Well done Disney, you brought balance to the force!

I am really staring to dig the continued Blade Runner 2049 footage and info, even if the original (my favorite film) will remain unreachable. The Command & Conquer devs. made a really good "side story" adventure game for the first film in the 90s, so i canīt see why a true auteur as Villeneuve shouldnīt be able to make at least a solid 7 to 8/10 venture. I will frankly take anything after seeing GitS 2017 piss over the corse of my favorite sci-fi sub-genre.
The just announced and more comic accurate Hellboy reboot (i read evert issue, so at least 300) is a nice surprise too, not that the del Toro films were lacking. Del Toro is cursed with over a dozen unproduced projects anyway, so i am more shocked that the 2nd film even got made. Or the 2 toon films. The 2nd one is really good!

So, long rumored hard-R Spawn reboot when? The HBO toon was quite good and the first 50 issues were mostly good too. And can that Lobo script be finally be green lit to shot? The Deadpool cinematic-universe + just announced FX toon (what a world we live in :ubik: ) has room for a few more, as long as the budget is kept in check.

Edit: @Griffith Film Rick Deckard is confirmed to be a next gen Replicant by Ridley Scott himself, even if his actor disagrees. The Final Cut would make no sense if he was a human too. The highly different book version tough is human. A nice and clear differentiator in my eyes between both versions.

Post script redux: Judge Dredd is getting a tv show! What is happening today?

The was no other realistic scenario for an ending point, so this back-season is just the PS2 game, but less pleasant. No sane person would finance a new episode order, as this would need to start a fresh production. Even pirates + sites as reddit barely care about the show anymore... This forum is also crawling along by now. The sign of danger right there.
I still suspect that 1-24 was a packaged deal, so get ready for some random OVA for the end, or nothing. Which i would vastly prefer, as i found ep. 6 to be borderline unwatchable (3/10). It and many upcoming ones are action focused, and these people are less then equipped for that. Goddam Beast Wars looked more majestic. The Vritannis visit is even more visually complex... "That team" Walter pointed out would pull it off, but we arenīt blessed with them. I truly wonder how they feel that their work is attached to this show.

PS: I somehow nearly stopped hearing this seasonīs clangs till ep. 6, as my attention is barely there at this point. Ep.6 though, holly shit :isidro: . CHANG came back, with a vengeance! I am perceiving it wrong or did the sound "engineer" go all in last time?

Last ep. was 5/10 and No. 17 is a 6/10, as they only had to do a huge exposition dump for 20 minutes this time. The ep. still completely fell apart in the last minute, as they butchered the troll attack. Overall the best or 2nd best ep. of the overall show and better than any 20 min. chunk of the films. See, i get to say something positive about this endeavor! Seeing Elfhelm in light of the current manga eps. was fun too. My biggest gripe is the directing. Nearly every single shot did something wrong but this week again showed that the often "praised" (well, not here) 2D animation is as bad as the 3D segments. They needed to rely on them due to the many talking heads and i wasnīt a pretty sight. Ah, something positive to close off. Chiwa Saito IS  :schierke: . Well done lady, 2nd best casting after :farnese: .
The preview for next week looks rough though.

@Griffith I just re-watched a bit of Reboot on YouTube and it has way better animation that what GEMBA gave us :ganishka: . I was frankly surprised how well the 3D puppets moved, when compared to the ugly surroundings.

No proper picture blog is apparently covering this, gr8t. Once More Into the Fray... and i am doing other things while watching.

The 1st short bit with Guts is alright, as they just adapted the manga and the soundtrack official went from bad to alight in "S02". The :griffnotevil: portion though can go fuck itself. The animations apparently donīt know why they are using CG, as the armies donīt move or react to almost anything. Most look like trash too, as this is the first time they are featured in the show. The 3D animators further bothered to make all these villagers but none of them moved either. So, why didnīt the use a 2D panning shot instead? That would have saves time + money and it would have looked better! The bewildering cuts and "camera" movements most importantly made no sense and all of this moved so fast that i had problems following along. The after credits demon attack lastly started in-media-res. Why?
Ep. 1 and 3 are still the very bottom and should hopefully remain unreachable but ep.15 sure tried. 3/10

I was feeling dead inside already as i just saw GitS 2017 (3/10), so Berserk eps. 13-14 were only the 2nd worst adaptation of beloved source material for today.
The OP went from being the worst such thing i ever saw to looking and sounding like a Bleach reboot. Success? The ED exist, i guess. The eps. themselves were in a word incompetent but unoffensive. They delivered worse before and them being stacked only proves that they mostly spend time on a hard drive for 3 month. The studio ultimately got simple enough chapters to speed though cliff-notes style but that canīt be said for whatīs coming... The somewhat better sound everything (outside of a few VAs, poor :beast: ) is an "improvement" but the editing has borderline reached an all time low. 4/10

Is a picture blog covering this, as i want to switch over.

On the discussion above: I loved Lost from start to finish and The Leftovers, especially S02, is prefect television. S01 directly adapted the book and itīs writer wrote for S02 too. He is the MVP there.
Lindelofīs revisions to Promethues were unfortunate, especially due to him bailing, but the overall film still came out as an enjoyable 2 hours. The best part of the Alien franchise since the AvP 2 game in 2001, or Alien 2 regarding the films. Him and the equally internet infamous David Goyer get my full blessing, warts and all.

I came though for DC in the film thread and will now do the same for Marvel. The universally torn apart Ironfist managed to keep my undivided attention for 11 eps. till needed to sleep. DD is still the king, frankly the best comic adaptation of all time, but this direct spin-off is now the 2nd best MCU show due to lack of bloat. My favorite new show of the year is also Legion by Fox. The current ep. even had a silent black and white segment based on Eraserhead and this is the first time that i experienced tv horror as being unnerving. Even Takashi Miikeīs Masters of Horror ep. didnīt managed that.
Arrow S05 lastly had a shocking return to form, to switch sides, after an average and then truly bad season. It proves that that you CAN polish a turd. Even with the B-list writers and a reduced budget.
(The rest of their current comic seasons, outside of Riverdale, are sadly nothing special.)

22
Probably Hi no Tori, also knows as Phoenix, by Osamu Tezuka. He never finished the overall larger arc due to his death but the featured stories are all told to completion.
The 80s Madhouse OVA adapted 3 of them masterfully too.

Anime Asylum / Re: 2017 Berserk TV Series (Season 2)

Wild speculation about a possible S03: Anime adaptations are usually divided into a 3 month chunk, a 3 (or sometimes 6) month break, and then the back half. Us getting 24-26 eps. was what i always expected and having them start with No. 14 for S02 just confirms that this is still a "S01" order. US shows take (winter) breaks too for example, so no revaluations here. Which brings me to the numbers Hitoshura linked too in the overall anime thread. Thx. These are shockingly low, i truly mean that in every sense. I did NOT expect sales below 1k in week 1 and anime make most of the money in the week of release. Them even doubling the number over time is unbelievable, which would still be a very bad figure. A completely new production order is thus impossible. The show is objectively a bomb, unless it is a tax write off scam :ganishka: .

What i can imagine is a 1 to 2 part OVA, which brings me to the Terra Formars adaptation by Liden Films. Itīs basically Gantz in space for context. It took 1 year and 3 months for S02 to come out, as the original animation staff was fired, due to poor disc sales. These are how Midnight Anime make most of their revenue (letīs keep is simple). Both seasons also had problems i donī t need to address here. S01 had a WAY higher budget and both adapted the 1st and 2nd act of the core manga arc respectively, if you see the current time skip as "act 4". An OVA is supposed to come next, but it may also be cancelled due to a conflicting report this month. The OVA is supposed to be bundled with a limited print of a new volume. It will skip the 3rd act and just adapt a current volume. Thatīs comparable to WB skipping book 3 to 4 of Potter and doing a random adaptation of the trials in book 5, with NO context. I didnīt ask for this...
We could thus get a 2 part adaptation of the Sea God arc next. Itīs frankly more believable that a new season and the TF OVA can only have been commissioned to "promote" the Takashi Miike film.
Do we have something to "promote"? Musou 1,5? Huh, that one could help to push a new anime / OVA into production. Thatīs my somewhat educated take.

PS: I recently saw the impressive Gantz:O CG anime film and it 100% proves that a true to the source Berserk adaption can be made in the present market. There are no excuses!

The S02 board is currently locked but my question is more about S01 anyway. ANN features the Japanese anime sales charts each week, sourced from Oricon. I never Berserk 2016 on them and typing out ベルセルク aka. Berserk on Oricon itself only gives me all the possible discs to buy. Does anyone know the sales figures? Thanks in advance.
(A show is usually seen as a hit with sales over 10k, if the budget wasnīt out of proportion, but approaching that number is good too.)

I canīt believe how downright ugly the key art looks but the team is at least not making empty promises of possible quality. I am still no sure if i will even watch the pilot, but i will lol pretty hard if the show somehow got worse. They are even adapting my favorite arc. Another reason not to tune in, as the PS2 game did a fine job with their take.
