Character Cove / Re: What Apostle/Creature did you like the best?
« on: April 24, 2018, 08:30:12 AM »
Never understood the criticism of the Wyald character/encounter and it has come up before. As others have already pointed out it adds to the story in multiple ways. In some aspects it is one of my favorite pre-eclipse battles/Apostles.

I definitely see the argument, I just think that Guts' first encounter with Zodd serves a similar purpose. On top of the "mini-feast," I also think his continual rape of every woman he sees also detracts from the Eclipse. His almost-rape of Casca is just... I don't know, it feels less story significant and more shock-value.

If you see the argument you should realize it is more than just shock-value. People have already pointed that out. Obviously it also adds to push Griffith closer to the edge. There is actual legit character developments in the encounter. I am baffled everytime this comes up..

What's your math on that?

I live in Scandinavia so the Switch here is 409 dollars, Zelda is 71 dollars. No additional accessories is included in that price. I do not know of any other company than Nintendo that can pull this stunt off and still be successful. Had they released a new Metroid or any Nintendo franchise other than Zelda I might be more on board. No sane person would pay 400+ dollars for a single game but that is what's happening with the Switch. Even the MarioKart on Switch is just MarioKart 8 with shinier pixels and a game mode added. Nobody knows when the new 3d Super Mario comes out so again we are in a Wii U situation. Oh right you can play Skyrim on it too, are you fucking kidding me?  :azan:

I bought a PS4 just for Bloodborne so I am not exactly following my own advice that well but at least the PS4 has a large library of games.

I love Nintendo gameplay but I also hate their console/game release approach.

475 dollars for a console and one game (so far). Not exactly making me sprint out and get one, while Breath of the Wild looks great I cannot justify that price. If the Switch game lineup is gonna be anything like the Wii U we are in for another first party dust collector which is only brought out when Nintendo actually makes a good game. At least it can be played on the Wii U but it looks "bad" and a lower framerate compared to the Switch.

Then after 80 hours of playing Zelda the console can go back to gathering dust for 6 months until Nintendo releases another first party game. I really hope this is not the case but unfortunately the way the game industry is right now it's too expensive to develop for Switch while also developing for PC, XB1 and PS4 at least for AAA studios. This has been the case almost since the Wii came out and it's continued that tradition over to Wii U. All I can hope for is that the Switch does really well so there is an incentive to actually develop games for it.

I think this thread is just going in circles now.

None of us can with certainty say what will happen with Guts and Casca when her mind is returned, although it is fun to theorize ofcourse and I do not fault Truth for speaking his mind. However @TheAwfulTruth you seem to be hellbent on proving your theory and projecting your own biases onto the story. Furthermore your understanding of character motivations seems rather completely skewed.

Sorry for being a bit of a dick, didn't mean to put a damper on everything.

Isn't a flea/higher pitched sounding voice usually associated with sadistic/insane characters? Regardless of size and muscle that does seem to be the go to voice in Japan when concerning these types. That being said it does feel like the voice should be deeper but what is there already is not terrible.

Wonder if Guts would even be able to keep his anger :beast: at bay if he was to enter the dreams as well. Considering he could likely  be taken back to the Eclipse. I guess it would be a bit predictable if it was Guts who would bring Casca back. As usual it's difficult predicting what Miura will do and it only makes me even more hyped for this. I'm waiting so long... :casca:

hehe that Mozgus rock is great!

Hah I laughed out loud at the Mozgus one :ganishka:

Berserk Miscellaneous / Re: How Did You Find Out About Berserk?
« on: September 05, 2016, 05:18:17 PM »
I watched the 1997 anime in the early 2000's. I liked it quite a bit but the abrupt ending at such a turning point was pretty devastating. Some years went by but I would always think back to Berserk so I re-watched it again. My reaction was pretty much the same and I knew absolutely nothing about the Manga connection to most Anime's. I decided to search the web for Berserk and of course my mind was blown. I got possessed by Berserk, eventually I found and signed up. I rarely join any kinds of forums but Berserk influenced me in such a way that I had to read what other people thought about it and also share my fondness for Berserk via my own art (something I have been neglecting for years now  :mozgus: forgive me Walter for I have sinned).

Vagabond / Re: Thoughts on Vagabond's Future
« on: August 16, 2016, 10:36:33 AM »
I love the Manga but unlike Berserk I do not have the need to follow latest releases. I actually quite liked the rice farming part, it reminded me a lot of the Vinland Saga tree chopping/slavery part which was also great. I have not read beyond the rice farming part but I can take several years without coming back to it and I always re-read it when I do come back to it.

Vagabond for me does not seem to work well reading it in small releases/chunks. I need to sit down with several volumes and get sucked into Inoue's story.

Anime Asylum / Re: 2016 Berserk TV series: Episode 1

The intro was kinda neat, all nice smooth 2d animation for the most parts and there was a few seconds here and there I liked and that's about all the positives I have. That's barely a few min's out of a full episode.

The pacing was completely Schnoz'd!! There was hardly any time to breathe in that episode everything just went past so fucking quick. We get moments where the camera is not controlled by a 2 year old but instead there is terribly off putting music, ruining what was left to be ruined.

Just fucking great.

Even on a low budget you can have good pacing, consistent art and camera work, it just shows how inexperienced they are or how unprofessionally they take it. For fuck sake will Berserk ever get some god damn respect from these hacks!! Is Berserk so unpopular in Japan that it can't even get a decent budget and studio to make it proper? Is the state of the Japanese animation industry so fucked? Or is it just completely incompetent people in charge?

I still cannot get over how poor the shadows on the characters look. The cheap overlay effect is not even aligned to the characters, it literally looks like it is just an effect laid on top. Makes it look sloppy and cheap.

Video Games / Re: XCOM
« on: April 29, 2016, 07:55:51 AM »

Yeah I have been following the game during it's development and now that it's out maybe I should take another look. Normally I do not care much about graphics but Xenonauts is just so unappealing/uncharming to look at that it has so far kept me from trying anything more than the demo. Will probably buy it though just to support the developers and maybe try and see past it's graphical shortcomings, it's not like the Original XCOM is a beauty anymore, although it still has some charm to it (who doesn't love all those colors  :serpico:).

Video Games / Re: XCOM
« on: April 28, 2016, 01:55:48 PM »
I think both of the "re-imaginings" are excellent games but I would hardly call them XCOM, they stand on their own just fine.

The problem for me is that so many features that made the original XCOM great are missing in the new ones. A lot of the features are still there but they have been dumped down or simplified to the point where it no longer resembles those features as much anymore.

I am mostly talking about the features in the Geoscape/Management side of things. I really enjoyed having to buy/sell/manufacture and research all the things for my soldiers and base, also being able to allocate scientists and engineers to different projects and not just being limited to one research at a time. There are a lot of other things missing from the new games but I do not wanna list every feature that's missing or that was simplified, it seems a lot like nitpicking to people and I often get the response "you are just seeing the Original with rose tinted nostalgic glasses" a response I absolutely fucking hate.

I get why they did it and I even remember an interview where the game designers stated that they tried out the old method but ultimately went with the "simplified" version because people thought it was too confusing. The original XCOM was really hard to figure out but that was before proper tutorials and introductions, something that is standard in games today.

That being said I enjoy the new games and Firaxes makes amazing games most of the time.

I will be looking forward to Jullian Gollops (original XCOM creator) next game

I think only a fraction of our listeners are probably sitting in front of their screens listening attentively to us. I imagine most are like me, listening while driving, doing chores around the house, taking a walk, etc.

Yeah perhaps, I mostly listen while I am on the train or at work, both instances where video would have been quite nice. Would be nice seeing video podcasts on a Skullknight youtube channel one day, I believe a lot more people would tune in as well if that was the case. As Lithrael said there might be members you trust that would be interested in some editing work.

I just want more Berserk in my life and having good analyzed content with video would be pretty sweet. Would also make me want to rewatch/listen more to all the old podcasts. It could be a patreon goal, at least one I would be throwing money at.

The legality is difficult but as long as it's under the fair use laws it should be okay?

I will be looking forward to the Dreamcast review then :serpico:

Thanks for another great episode.

Would it be possible for you guys in the future to have a video podcast instead? The thing I am missing the most is being able to follow what pages/panels you are referring too. Of course I can do that on my own time, bring out the Volumes and follow that way. However it is not something I feel like doing or have the time to do either.

Would absolutely love if Walter for instance you had a monitor being recorded while you guys talk and people can see exactly what panel you guys are referring too.

It is some extra work though. Most likely you have already looked at this idea and decided it to be too much.

Anime Asylum / Re: New Berserk Anime for 2016

How much of the key animation is done in-house by Studio 4C's own long-time veteran animators in Japan, and how much of it gets done by unpaid interns in some offshore studio in Philippines or Taiwan (some of favored outsourcing destinations for Japanese anime companies looking to slash production costs)

It certainly looks that way. If that 3d animation is Studios 4C's own they really hit an all time low in terms of quality (and it was pretty damn low already). The rendering is what is making it look absolutely shit during the CGI shots, looks like almost none of the more advanced rendering/lighting methods were used even though those software's used are capable of doing so. Does this mean Studio 4C chose this style, worked on it in-house and think it looks good? Or are they outsourcing from dirt cheap companies which is exactly what Johnny Apples suggested. Outsourced or not it just shows how little respect is given to the brilliant artwork and story of the source material.

Hopefully they just created a quick teaser themselves or hired the outsourcing company to do the teaser while Studios 4C are working on the episodes. I doubt this to be true though  So not only will the story be horribly inaccurate it will also look like crap. Sadly I will still follow this closely and continue to have some sliver of false hope.

Before the Kushans attacked this holy land, a long time ago, we Bakiraka hid ourselves in an impregnable fortress and made a living as assassins for hundreds of years.

Several people have mentioned that the fortress is in Silat's homeland. But from Azzeahls "rough" translation it could also be somewhere in Midland.  The journey to Kushan territory sounds like it would take quite a while but also remove all the characters "good guys" from the country and therefor our inside view in Falconia. Either way I cannot wait to see this new location and what evil now probably resides in it.

Perhaps this is the perfect segway into Elfhelm once they leave Falconia. Next time we see Falconia, will all the residents be gone? Perhaps in the bellies of the less human looking residents  :griffnotevil:

A game I have been waiting for ever since the rumor announcement is:

I don't play the table top game but I played Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat and Warhammer: Dark Omen, both great Fantasy titles. I recommend taking a look at Dark Omen, even today it is still playable, challenging and great fun. Creative Assembly have messed up in the past though, their latest few games have been riddled with bugs and just poor AI etc. However I cannot suppress my excitement for this game.

Video Games / Re: Bloodborne
« on: March 30, 2015, 11:31:14 AM »
It is a fact that Hidetaka Miyazaki has said he took inspiration from Berserk for Dark Souls (this was concerning the onion armor). Also I think it is pretty safe to presume a lot of the staff read Berserk. As we all know FROM SOFTWARE is based in Japan and are making medieval fantasy based games, I think Berserk is one of their biggest sources of inspiration.

I think that rune is a tribute or a nod of respect (whatever is the right term here) towards Berserk. I have absolutely no proof of this but taken into account that there are major Berserk fans in the company I would say it is not so far fetched. To be honest there is probably a higher chance of this being a direct Berserk reference rather than the artist just happened to make the rune look very similar to the brand.

I have fallen completely in love with this game. I think I am close to the 3rd boss by now. Love the new more aggressive approach to the combat mechanics, weapons are fun and I love I can combo R1 L1 L2 etc.

The lack of different environments, weapons, chests, armor, shield, and special weapons really is a bummer.  The combat is smooth and the difficulty seems the same as every game before.

I think being at the 3rd boss and already judging the game for it's lack of items is a bit rash. By now I have about as many weapons and armor as I would in Dark Souls boss 3. Sure there were perhaps more areas to go to in Dark Souls from the Firelink Shrine but hopefully Bloodborne is huge and a lot still awaits. Concerning the environment I think the setting will change later on, as in Dark Souls the starter areas were all castle/same looking as well. People seem to forget that or is it just me?

And yeah the loading times are not a big issue for me at all, I want it fixed ofc but people like to whine about everything, which is why I tend to avoid user comments from vids/sites etc.

Speculation Nation / Re: Flora's Reputation Among Elfhelm Magic Users
« on: March 10, 2015, 09:32:48 AM »
The problem I have with that is Flora seems pretty reserved, to me. Not the kind to rebelliously disregard the rules. She chastises herself for the extended life thing, for example. There are no other authority figures there to cast judgment; she judges herself.

When she meets with SK in Vol 24 as the group is departing, she asks him (paraphrasing) "What ever led you to request a favor of me?" Implying the nature of their relationship was usually lopsided with SK helping her more often.

She could have been less reserved in the past back when she still had a love interest :carcus:? That love interest could have been Skullknight before his current state or possibly some other magic user. We know one thing for sure is that she extended her life and I see her doing that to either take care of Schierke and/or helping Skullknight.

While it is a bit implied their relationship was lopsided I like to believe that is just how things were now. She got old and he didn't maybe she was just referring to how their relationship has been the last couple of (hundreds) years where Skullknight is at a point where he does not need a magic user or put her in danger anymore.

I certainly don't expect the elves themselves to be judgmental. Like the thread says, I'm referring to the human magicians that live along with the elves.

Ah right I went a bit off topic there without realizing it. I tend to think the magicians living there might be a bit delusional, if they believe they can stay on the island forever without Femto or another member of the God Hand making some sort of move. At some point they have to react or who knows maybe they already are but somehow I doubt it. Who knows what they do all day other than smoke Elf weed.

I thought that maybe some of the magic users there will similar to pompous scientists from our past and look down upon Flora's choices but not be in an outrage about it.

It remains to be seen, but Elfhelm was already in the astral world, and indeed filled with astral inhabitants. So the merging likely wouldn't have affected it as much. But human territories that had been divorced from the astral world, and thus not prepared to defend against its inhabitants, would be affected cataclysmically.

Yeah there are probably not too many surprises for the Elves after the merge but then the question is if anything has happened at all to Elfhelm after the merge? I am a bit torn on whether I should believe if Elfhelm will be a long much needed rest for the group and Casca's return or that they will once again have to fight through "something" but then be saved/captured by the Elves. One thing is for sure I cannot wait for what Miura has in store for us.
