Movies, TV, Books & Music / Watch old classics for free
« on: October 02, 2007, 09:08:51 PM »
I was linked to this site earlier today:

The concept is pretty simple: they take old movies, cartoons and TV series that fell into the public domain and make them available through a Creative Commons license. It's free, it's legal, you watch them online using streaming, and they have a really nice amount of good stuff, some of which is pretty hard to find elsewhere. "The Man Who Knew Too Much" by Hitchcock, a color version of "Nosferatu", Charlie Chaplin's classics, early Betty Boop and Bugs Bunny stuff, The Night of the Living Dead, the Dick Tracy Movie Serial, Laurel & Hardy, etc. They even have John Wayne in there. =)

I think it's a pretty neat idea, so anyone interested in cinema should give it a shot.

Scientists say they have evidence that a ferocious dinosaur made famous by the movie Jurassic Park definitely had feathers.  Experts say the dinosaur, called Velociraptor, had a wing structure just like modern birds.  VOA's Jessica Berman reports.

A new study by American researcher Alan Turner and his colleagues provides the first conclusive evidence that Velociraptor, a sprinting, vicious dinosaur that lived some 80 million years ago, had feathers.
The Velociraptor in the current study is estimated to have been one meter tall, 1.5 meters long and weighed just over 13 kilograms.

Turner, a graduate student at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and lead author of the study, says Velociraptor appears to have been a smaller creature than in Jurassic Park, but just as nasty.

"It's sort of as if you scaled up a chicken and then gave it really nasty teeth and big claws on its feet," he said.

Oh man, an overgrown chicken with nasty teeth?

"Clever girl." XD

At least Dr. Grant was right though, they were really related to birds.

Video Games / Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
« on: September 21, 2007, 09:26:25 AM »
As a Resident Evil fan and a Wii owner I feel I need to make a thread on this game. When it was first announced I didn't think much of it but as time went by it started to look better and better and now I can't wait to get it.

For those that haven't heard of it, it's an on-rail shooter la The House of the Dead in which the details behind the fall of Umbrella Corp. will be revealed. You'll play through levels set during RE0, RE1, RE2 and RE3, plus the obligatory new areas and events taking place between RE3 and RE4. The game will be compatible with the Wii Zapper, an accessory combining the Wiimote and Nunchuk into a single rifle-like device, and a bundle is already planned (while we're on that topic, the Wii Zapper by itself will be sold $19.90 with a small game called Zelda: Crossbow Training).

I could talk more about it but I'll just say that it seems Capcom's aim is to please the fans as much as possible with this game, and that it's already considered by all those who've tried it to be far above the other rail shooter spin-offs they released in the past. News & Not News / Raytheon develops the Pain Gun

Dailymail article

"Where do I put my finger? There ... OK? Nothing's happening ... is it on?"

"Yes, it's on. Move your finger a bit closer."

"Er ... ow! OW!" Not good. I try again. "OWWW!" I pull my hand away sharpish. My finger is throbbing, but seems undamaged.

I was told people can take it for a second, maximum. No way, not for a wimp like me.

I try it again. It is a bit like touching a red-hot wire, but there is no heat, only the sensation of heat. There is no burn mark or blister.

They're calling it the Silent Guardian. I find it awesome, though I definitely understand why the guy's frightened. This means perfect torture, straight out of Dune. No physical damage, just pure pain sent directly to the nerves. It can fire its invisible ray half a mile away too.

Video captured by cameras at a train station shows a mother driving her four children in a mini-van was trying to race a freight train to a crossing before the vehicle was hit by two trains.

The woman's two daughters were killed in the Saturday morning collision, and her two sons were injured. The driver, Edie Bolanos, remained hospitalized in critical condition on Thursday , officials said.

Seriously, it takes all kinds of stupid to do something like this. And with her kids? It's just so irresponsible...

Thanks largely to the efforts of our loyal fans whom continue to sustain and grow the Command & Conquer community, Command & Conquer has become a legendary franchise and its time to celebrate its birth once again.

In order to give back to the fans for over 12 years of devotion we are putting together a 12th Anniversary celebration during the month of September. However, as any Command & Conquer fan knows, the true party starts today, August 31st, which marks 12 years since Command & Conquer Gold launched way back in 1995.

To kick the celebration off, today we have a special surprise which we are certain new and old Command & Conquer fans will enjoy. We are providing the original Command & Conquer Gold as a free download, compatible for Windows XP! This is the same version included with the collectors pack Command & Conquer: The First Decade, and is now available for you to download for free!

I think it's a nice move honestly, especially coming from EA.

Berserk Merchandise / AOW - "Hundred Men Slayer" diorama
« on: May 24, 2007, 04:23:40 PM »
Nothing too specific announced yet but AOW has an ad in the latest MBR volume depicting a future diorama that will represent Guts' battle against a hundred men in his youth. The scale of the diorama will be 1/10 and it appears to be pretty cool, although we'll have to wait for good pictures to judge. It's basically Guts slashing at five mercenaries disposed in a semicircle around him and them all falling under his attack. For details, Guts' cape is blue, he doesn't wear his helmet and the scene shows some blood.

Berserk Miscellaneous / Zodd statue
« on: April 22, 2007, 07:29:43 AM »
So why isn't this thread in the Merchandise section? Because we're not talking about a resin statue. :zodd:

It was done by a student at the university of Chungnam in Korea, it stands in front of the library. Unfortunately I don't know the sculptor's name (nor technical details about the statue), but props to him. He made it as his final work for graduation.

News & Not News / Black and White Twins
« on: February 06, 2007, 08:01:24 PM »
Quote from:
A mixed-race British mom gave birth to twins recently - one of each.

No, not a boy and a girl. Two girls - one black, the other white.

While very rare, the phenomenon is not unknown, though it does entail a very particular combination of circumstances at the moment of conception. First, both parents must be of mixed race. Second, the twins must be fraternal (each conceived from a separate egg fertilized by separate sperm) as opposed to identical (both conceived from a single egg and sperm). Third, each sperm and egg must carry the genes for a particular skin color (i.e., black/black or white/white).

The odds against it are indeed a million to one.

Pretty interesting happening I think.
