Movies, TV, Books & Music / Re: What are you watching? (television thread)
« on: December 03, 2013, 02:12:43 PM »
I'd like to discuss it more with anyone else who's watched it.
I've watched it, my sister recommended it to me. It's been a while since i saw it so my memory is a bit fuzzy. I liked it but i have some complaints. I honestly expected them to explain some of the stuff that happened. I didn't like how they ended the season, at all. I bet they are going to continue with the same pace at the second season. I don't think i will stick around if they do, i'll probably read a spoiler summary when they finish it.

Podcast / Re: What Should the SkullKast Cover?

I love the Skullcasts. I usually listen to all of it while i am working, i enjoy the discussions of the video games/movies/phone conversations as much as Berserk. The Berserk discussions are serious so it's a nice change when you guys are joking with the games and movies. Listening to the Podcasts made me realize just how deep the Berserk universe really is.
What i personally would like to see is some kind of reread project, i learn so much stuff when you guys revisit older events in the series. It would be nice if you gave us some kind of "homework" for example you could say that you would talk about volumes 1-3 in the next Podcast, we could then ask you guys about questions.
I voted for Older Volume Reviews.

I have been listening to this album lately.
The Sound Defects - The Iron Horse

New Arcade Fire anyone??
I wanted to listen to that. A freind of mine is telling me that it's really good.

Very interesting, i really like this part. Amazing how they managed to survive.
Although many spores died, some survived, proving that certain bugs could successfully hitchhike to Mars. The most damaging effects came from the ultraviolet radiation the spores experienced outside Earth’s protective atmosphere. To survive, “either they have to hide or come up with an ingenious mechanism of repairing the DNA damage,” says Vaishampayan, who worked on the PROTECT experiment.

By the way, could anyone who's already received their Young Animal confirm whether the girl's name is written ブロメ or プロメ ? It's impossible to tell from the pictures because the quality is too low. If it's プロメ (with a small circle instead of two strokes), it would mean that her name is Purome, which would be most reminiscent of Prometheus, a famous Greek mythological figure.
That could make sense, Dellos could also be a Greek name. Delios (Δήλιος in Greek) was a military adviser for Alexander the Great and his father Phillip. The name is also used in mathematical problems that can't be solved.

Well she kind of has an eerie look about her. She tells Delos at the beginning (who's super thirsty) that she can provide clean water, collecting it from the ambient air. Maybe she's from a specific kindred herself? So far the motif fits the classic myth of a human and a "god" (Burome) working together to fight the giants.
I see, now that i looked at the pictures again i understand what you mean.
It seems to me that the monster face in the cover, that Burome is standing on, is the same as the monster at the beginning (and the end of this episode). We also see blood rushing out of his eyes and nose. Perhaps the monsters attack the Scarabae in the next episode so Burome takes care of them. Can't wait to see what will happen.

They hate the empire, which they thought Delos was from. The empire is responsible for the destruction seen at the beginning, and is where the "giant monsters" come from. Anyway, there are various kindreds, and these guys are from the "Scarabae" one.
Thank you for this summary. I can't wait to see how this story develops.

Also worth noting is that Burome isn't human.
Really interesting, i honestly didn't expect that.

Thanks for the scans and for the names guys. Man, i was eagerly waiting for this. A Sci-Fi series from my favorite Artist, this is like a dream come true. I tried to figure out what the story is about, but i will wait for a summary or a translation to be sure.
In the first page it says "Γιγαντο Μαχια" and Παρεχωμενη υπο Μιουρα Κενταρο + στουντιο Γαγα" with Greek letters. This translates to "Giganto Makhia" on the top and "Brought to you by Kentaro Miura and Studio Gaga" I found it interesting that he translated it to Greek.
Seems to me that the bug people are at war with the Humans, or at least they really hate the humans. Then there is a higher force that seems to bring destruction in this world.
Thanks again for everything !

I finally caught up to you guys. Man, amazing tv series. I am glad i decided to give it another try.

Possible mega spoiler below

A friend of mine showed me this site, . He is saying that Elliot and Gretchen Schwarz are Lydia's bosses. He is basing this assumption on this find

"We've depended on Madrigal Electromotive for years.   I can honestly say that without their expert advise, timely delivery, and superb support our company could never have achieved it's premier position in the industry."

What do you guys think about it ?
EDIT: I looked at this site a bit more and i think that it must be a ruse made from a fan.

I don't actually hate him on camera, but I've never been impressed by his acting work. Is there a specific role in has past that you think shows he has the capacity to bring this character to life?
Not really, but keep in mind that this movie wont be centered around Batman/Bruce Wayne. He doesn't really have to play a difficult role. I doubt that they will dig deep (or at all) into Batman's past and his reasoning. Through out most of the movie he will be wearing his costume (if people really don't like him, there are some costumes that hide Batmans face =) ).

How could Ben Affleck bring to life an eccentric billionaire who retreats to waging vigilante justice in an expensive bat costume to cope with the anguish of his parents being murdered in front of him? What in his repertoire indicates a capacity to do that? Of all the movies I've seen him in, he has never impressed me with his acting performance.
C'mon it can't be that bad. I don't think that he is the perfect choice for this role, but IMO he could play a convincing Bruce Wayne.

Video Games / Re: Diablo 3!

I am wondering, what if someone doesn't buy the expansion, will he be able to login to the normal game ? Perhaps they will make the expansion set a requirement so that players have to buy it.
Yeah, but D2 was already good, and Blizzard basically kept making it better right until Diablo III came out, which has experienced the opposite phenomenon as things seemingly just get worse. I'll still play the expansion... IF I can ever connect to the Blizzard servers again to download it and re-install D3, which is a new problem not exclusive to me (Blizzard? HELLO!?). Still, it's a fun game, it's just that it's inferior to D2 in almost every way but graphics (though this is arguable from style standpoint =) and fluidity of gameplay (both of which can be chalked up to basic modern advancements, not ingenuity on the developer's part). Anyway, you should still play it if you love D2, like I said it's still fun for what it is, and it's also kind of whipping boy online (even among those that have, say, spent 400 hours playing it, ahem). So, it's still a repetitively fun game, just with some fatal flaws and expectations it couldn't deliver on (or top D2 or its successors in the genre in just about any way, strangely).
I am going to play it, even for old time sakes because i had so much fun with it's predecessor. I was just waiting for a few patches/the expansion to come out first. I am hoping that they succeed into turning this game around. Unfortunately from what i have been seeing they don't really care about making the game better but instead they are focusing on how to make more money out of it. I don't really mind that, i mean they have to make money, but IMHO they are doing it all wrong.

Depending on what they're doing with  it, I might give it a shot. But I think Blizzard really shit the bed with this game already.
I love D2 but i haven't really played D3 because of all the bad reviews it was getting. I really hope they turn it around. D2 became really exceptional when the expansion came out, i want to believe that something similar happens to this game.

That's why I went back to D2 and my hardcore guy there (my lvl 70 softcore guy I only play with a bud). Anyway, he was only in Act II and I got him to III and lost interest again (fucking Kurast and the jungle, Christ). So I'm on my D1 guy now.
Man, i really hate the third Act... I really like Act 2 and 4

Maybe I'll fire it up again. It looked pretty cool.
It's a really good game, give it another try. A buddy of mine is having a great time. I tried playing it but my Laptop can't really handle it, it gets really hot after a while. I am currently looking to buy a new Desktop PC.

BTW, I may be a lost cause, but you'll be glad to know I persuded my dad to pick up Dark Souls and he's already got an NG+ level 100-something character.
Your Dad is really cool, my dad recently went into retirement and he is bored out of his mind. I wish i could get him into gaming, i am constantly trying to keep him occupied =).

Totally boring ones out of D2 101, a softcore IK WW barb and an extra defensive conc barb in HC. I'm trying these because I never played any dedicaded archtype builds back in the day, just stuck points wherever on my starting character and whatever he turned into, he was my guy. I could melt mobs in solo Hell though thanks to my elite lance (I'm fond of recounting that I was offered $20 for it irl =). That character got nerfed sometime after the expansion came out and it became literal and figurative trench warefare for my whirly lancer. My dream is to basically recreate that old barb, but first I'm building the IK one, trying to get the set for fun, and of course placing the points as efficiently as possible. Later I may try to rune up a super lance and totally make him over, but it'll be harder being non-ladder at this point.

Sounds like fun ! I like barbarian builds, the WW barb was my fastest killing build. I have to admit that my favorite character is the melee Paladin, Zeal is just ridiculous. Oh yeah, sry to hear about the death of your char, it has happened to me a few times as well, i hate the feeling   :schnoz:

Yeah, any of these Diablo-style dungeon crawlers are a double-edged sword. They're all fun, but they're all fleeting. Also, I go back and play Diablo II and I admire it not only for what it has but for some of the modern "advancements" it DOESN'T. It's still one of the best of its kind, which is a good feat for a game almost 15 years old, but also a pretty sad fact for the genre.
Have you tried Torchlight 2 ? It's a really good game, i had lots of fun playing it.

I started a new HC Barb with the same name as my D2 barbarian, Tarhcon, as opposed to my normal Tarchon (get it). Strangely, it drove me back to D2 hardcore for a while, and now regular Diablo PSX on my phone (lvl 32 Hell difficulty, gonna max out EVERYTHING).
I know that feeling, i really enjoy D2 SP, i always quit but after a while i end up thinking of a strange build that i want to try out so i starrt farming for items/runes or leveling characters.
What kind of build are you trying Griff ?

Is anyone watching Rectify ? It's the first time after The Wire and Sherlock that i enjoy a TV series this much. I love the passing, the soundtrack, the story. I can't recommend this show enough.

Duelist, specializing in ranged (which I never do, but I got a killer bow, so I've been putting points into that for now. Will ultimately probably dual wield with a good ranged as a backup.
Nice choice, i chose a Marauder as my starting class. Watch out for the next patch, melee is going to be totally reworked because the latest changes got negative feedback from the community.
Well, it is still in open beta. I'd imagine the earlier zones are more balanced than the later stuff. I've had zero issues with the game so far. Level 15 right now, at the end of Act 1.
There are some desync issues with the latest patches. This can lead to your characters death (plus the 15% exp penalty that comes along) they need to fix this issue. It has happened to me once, but since i am basically at the beginning of the game i don't really mind it.

Yeah I have been playing PoE as well. What character class did you choose Walter? The game is really fun for me as well. I can't spend that much time currently because of work but I am hoping for this to change soon. Unfortunately a good friend of mine is at a really high level and he is telling me that there are some really frustrating issues with the game.
