Berserk Miscellaneous / Re: Berserk: The Flame Dragon Knight novel

Ugh, I'm really glad I stopped watching season 2 after a few episodes. Imagine if that was the image in the book.  :magni:

This is unfortunate, hopefully this won't set a precedent for things to come, but like Aazealh said it's a real possibility. I'd be curious to know if the reason for this is because Miura feels he doesn't have enough time presently or in the future, to create these backstories for the side characters. Or if it's more about marketing the anime and other merchandise that's recently come out. Either way I hope at the very least character's like Skull Knight will be in manga form, he's such a important and mysterious figure through out the story and I've always looked forward to seeing it drawn and told solely by Miura.

Great episode, I love all the shots of younger Guts here, he looks great!  :guts: Him being solitary on the outskirts of town brings back memories of what we are shown, like the bonfire of dreams. Once again, I find the interpretations of the classic fairy tale creatures Miura has drawn to be very charming, my favorite being Azan dancing with the dwarves. :)

I'm hoping for the best like everyone else  and that it's something like a filler novel that doesn't pertain too much to the manga and isn't a shortcut to the actual series. I'd be sad if that's not the case as I was also looking forward to seeing some of these characters backstories in detailed art, especially the god hand and Griffiths army. I won't jump to conclusions though, and at least we'll get a sense of what's to come soon.

I just wanted to give a big thanks to Grail for making this custom avatar! I love Sonia's character in Berserk and she did a great job on this piece, with Sonia day dreaming away.  :griffnotevil:

Looks like crap. Sorry to say it, but every other adaption looked better then this (even the worst moments of the three films). I feel like the Dreamcast game had better animated motion, and yes I'm going there.  :iva:

I am my own worst enemy in this game. I'm still getting used to the controls and I keep making dumb mistakes, like accidentally firing a bomb arrow at my feet >.>

Don't worry, I've done myself in many times already lol. You do get used to the controls eventually, they really utilized every button for something useful. My only small gripe with the game is actually the inventory, Once you start getting loads of items, I wish there was a slightly better system of scrolling or organizing faster.

That Femto boss fight at the Eclipse was one of the stupidest, most infuriating fights I've ever experienced in a game. Utter garbage.

That's what I've been hearing Walter. I haven't played it myself yet, but why is this? Is it just made crappy, or unfair?

That is cool, but nothing will ever be cooler than the transition from kid Link, and really pre-OoT Link, to adult Link:

Yes! I also love that artwork, classic and one of my favorites.  :ubik:

That sucks Walter, it seems like they are sold out everywhere around this area too. I only got mine because I pre ordered a while ago. It's strange; you would think Nintendo, being in the business for over 30 years would know how much supply and demand they need, but who knows.

It's sad, I just can't get excited for this. I feel like the first season of the 2016 anime just sucked the life out of it. I feel like if I ever show anyone an adaption of Berserk besides the manga, it will be the 97 version once again. I'm hoping that they at least fixed a few of the problems, like the  horrendous CGI, inappropriate music placement and sound effects, and just poor story telling. From the looks of what others are saying, it's probably going to be the same.  :judo:

(Also what's up with the promo poster? The art for season 1 looked better, and that's saying something... ugh).

I love that illustration Hitoshura, I wonder if they'll have that in one of the artbooks outside of Famitsu at some point.

I've always been a fan of Zelda, and while I haven't played every game in the series, some of my favorites are Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time. I own a Switch (went to pick it up last night at the mall) and I am about three hours into Breath of the Wild. When the Nintendo 64 game came out, it was amazing at the time because of the jump to 3D, and I am having similar feelings with this game. The amount of freedom in BotW is incredible, and more then any other open world game I've played currently. I love that it's not just a barren empty void either; there are many things to do, see and explore. So far I'm having a blast and for anyone who has doubts about it, my first impressions are that it is something to experience for sure.

I've been following this thread, and I have to ask Truth: do you think you might want to re-read the manga series again? I'm not saying that to be cheeky, I just feel like maybe you misunderstood some of the characters motives, feelings and the general outlook on them (mainly Guts and Casca). I understand what your saying about the relationship, but I would have to disagree. Like Walter said, the story makes it pretty clear how she felt for Guts during the Golden Age and before the eclipse occurred. I have a hard time believing Guts would harm his own son to kill Femto and I don't think that will even come into play and just makes for messy story telling.

I say take another look at the series, I think you will find that although there will be complications and things to overcome, I am sure Casca and Guts will form a strong bond once again soon enough.

12 hours of the game are on YouTube, for those who are interested in the game's cutscenes:

Thanks Walter. I'm going to be honest, it looks fun from what I've watched. I enjoy playing those types of games from time to time, and although some things look pretty ridiculous, I am going to take for what it is. I think I'm most looking forward to fighting the boss battles, it looks like they put a decent amount of effort into them.

Manga Mausoleum / Re: Dark Horse Releases

Unfortunately, that's the worst part of the Dark Horse editions. Spine uniformity was a relative strength before! :ganishka:

Don't get me wrong, supporting the official English release is the right thing to do, but damn if they don't make it seem easier to just learn Japanese and go with the untranslated volumes.  :troll:

In summary: most un-groovy. :azan:

Lol very true, like both of you said. I never realized how incorrect some of the spellings and translations were until I found Skullknight back then. One thing I've noticed in a few of my manga volumes is that a couple of pages are also cut off, like a slice of the dialogue and some of the picture, like a bad print. Thankfully most are okay but it's unfortunate.

Unpopular opinion: you guys care too much about those spines. It's shitty, sure, but get over it... It's not the end of the world.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm lucky enough to have one of the earlier prints so they line up decent, but if I were in other's shoes I wouldn't waste money re-buying them all again just for alignment. What really matters is the content, which is unchanged.  :iva:

Berserk Miscellaneous / Re: Berserk Musou (PS3, PS4, PC)

I disagree, the fights in the North Star musou games especially the 2nd game were really good for musou standards. The 2nd game followed the manga quite well, they even made the cutscenes into manga panels with nice transitions. The South Star and North Star styles were done very well, the bosses in those games usually have 3 phases, every time a 1/3 of the health goes down the fighter changes combos and at the end there is a nice execution followed by a manga cutscene. For musou standards, i think they did a really good with the Hokuto fights.

I also enjoyed the two Hokuto no Ken games, I thought they were better then the average musou, and I had more fun then the few Dynasty Warriors games I did play. I think for polish, Zelda: Warriors is still high up there but it does have the financial backing of Nintendo. I think my favorite outfit so far is Schierke's golem one, it's very cute! Not a fan of Casca's wardrobe so far.

Great previews, I'm also intrigued by the idea that Farnese and Schierke will be going in instead of Guts, I didn't expect that. I like the full shot of Danan, it looks so detailed and the wings are great. Can't wait to see more! :)

(Also love the Mozgus rock face as well!) :mozgus:

Podcast / Re: Skullknight.NET Podcast: Episode 79
« on: September 20, 2016, 11:55:26 PM »
Thank you everyone for another wonderful podcast, I enjoyed listening to all of thoughts on the new anime.

I might sound like a broken record, but I wish they didn't do this adaption now that I've seen it in it's entirety. The 1997 anime series, while flawed, took it's time to develop the characters, the setting and mood. I felt while watching that years ago the creators behind it really cared about Miura's work, and made me feel varied emotions and kept me engaged the whole time. After seeing it I rushed out to purchase the first three manga volumes and was hooked since. I could never see this happening with the 2016 version; congrats to those who want to look further into the manga, but I still feel it's a shame they had to witness a really memorable arc of the story like this.

A few things that bothered me more then others:

- The rushed pace from when Guts is hunting apostles and encountering the demon tree, to already being at Godot's not long after and contemplating his choices on revenge or helping Casca. It works so much better in the comic because it's fleshed out, and the story has room to breathe. Here if I wasn't familiar with Berserk I wouldn't really buy into Guts' quest for war and his quick decisions to leave his love behind and then try to find her again.

- A point everyone else has mentioned, but oh boy the animation. There are a few close ups where things look brilliant (seems more often with Puck) but more often then not it's choppy, sloppily edited and looks very out dated. I wasn't a fan of the mix of CGI and traditional animation in the trilogy, but it holds up so much better then this. It takes me right out of the scenes when they are this bad.

- odd choices for characters or scenarios. One that was mentioned that I agree 100% is the swarm of specters in the black mass; in the manga it is terrifying and I love Miura's art for it, very creepy. The 2016 anime makes them look like... grape jelly? with no detail? Ugh. Some others include: faces not conveying the correct emotion, giving Skullknight some strange metallic look (I liked his design in the movies much better) and not using appropriate sound effects.

I may sound like an old maid on the subject but I am sticking to my guns that it's better to not have new Berserk animation if it's going to be poorly done and with people who don't care. We will always have the original story from the author, and that's all that matters at the end of the day.  :iva:

I've always been fine with waiting. My feeling is that this is one of my favorite stories I've ever read, and has such high quality that no matter how long Berserk takes to finish, we will have it forever once it's complete. Sometimes it's good to take a break and reflect on recent episodes, theories and speculation.

Walter, will you and Aazealh still be doing a podcast for the series summary? I know the show as a whole was pretty awful, but I figured I'd ask if you had any plans, maybe talking about the future of Berserk anime from here on out, and so on.

Why, in all of these videos, do the enemies appear to just stand around?  For anyone familiar with these games, is this a thing?  I want to feel powerful as Guts, but not untouchable.

From what I understand most Dynasty Warriors games act similar to this with the A.I. I've only personally played the Zelda Warriors game and it seems like this is also a thing, not quite as bad though.

As for the game itself, it looks like it's shaping up to be pretty fun, I don't have any high expectations for it other then to just mess around and use my favorite characters to defeat large groups of enemies. I'm curious about the boss fights with some of the apostles, the screen shots look decent.

I am late to the party but it seems like everyone else pointed out what I would say. A magical episode, I love all the old folklore creatures that Miura created with his own spin on things. The reveal at the end was very fitting. Because we are closely approaching one of the biggest events in Berserk with Casca, does anyone else feel like putting off previews or seeing bits and pieces? I feel like whatever we get soon is going to be very powerful, from the dialogue to the imagery and I know for myself to take it in when it's out completely makes a big difference. It's really easy to say that though and then be tempted with checking daily for a page or two!  :casca:

I love this episode, it brings so much to the table that we either weren't aware of or cemented facts about how we view the history and world of Berserk. Thank you Aazealh and Puella for the summary and translation, as well as Walter and Griffith for more insight on what's revealed.

Thinking back to when I've read the sections with Flora over the course of my re-reads, I never gave much thought to the tree itself. the nature oriented themes were well done and I always thought it was a fun design, but hearing this news I am surprised and glad that it's served a higher purpose. I feel that when we have the full scope of things further in the story, we will look back on other pieces of previous volumes with a different eye and context. I'd be curious to know how many other spiritual trees there were and who protected them, if we get any further back story on that.

The features and designs for some of the new characters like the older sages are so whimsical and appealing. Even though we have been introduced to a number of witches now, all of them have very distinct looks and style, and that's something I admire about Miura and his drawings. Danan is especially cute with her wardrobe and hat accessory.

Guts' description of Griffith's ambition was perfect, a powerful scene and it will be interesting to hear what else he has to say. I am hoping that Guts will elaborate more to his friends about his past, although maybe it will still happen off screen. Another thing I've been thinking about is if we will see the return of Skull Knight before or after the process of curing Casca has occurred, I feel like he will show himself eventually on the island at some point, but maybe it's far off.

Agreed. It's gross. Why not have her fighting since she is a playable character?

I agree, it's something I haven't been fond of with the new anime either. I realize that these moments are important for Casca's story development, but it seems like both of these never show how capable of a fighter she is, or as someone who isn't always vulnerable.
