Denying the God Hand

Sorry if this is a dumb question. Was just wondering if Griffith denied the godhand and saved his friends, would the godhand just pack their bags and leave peacefully? Or would they have sucked Griffith into the vortex of souls like the count?

They would have packed it in, although it would be completely unprecedented. Also, since so many apostles were gathered there... Well, the God Hand would have left, but once back at the lake, the apostles might still have had their feast...

The reason the Count's soul was absorbed into the Vortex is because he was already an apostle, and his soul had already been infused with evil. All apostles go to the Vortex when they die, regardless of how it happens. That's also why their bodies revert to their human form after death: when their soul was infused with evil, it distorted their corporeal form, but with the soul gone, it goes back to normal.

If the Count hadn't been an apostle but just a normal guy, for example if he had refused to sacrifice his wife all those years back, well he would have been left standing there with her in an extra-awkward situation. That being said, a lot of scheming goes into these events, so people typically don't refuse. In fact, and it's a testament to the man Griffith once was, it took quite a bit to break him. His dream in shambles, a year of torture leaving him an invalid, and even then Ubik had to play mind tricks so that he would buy what Void was selling.

The God Hand actually address this in Vol 12, in an often overlooked line. As Aaz said, Griffith can refuse the offer, but he would be forced to live in the “ruins of a dream.” He’d have to endure his normal life, knowing what could have been meant for him. And that’s something we know that Griffith had been seeking his whole life. Void called this the “cruel grace of the god born of man.”

Thank you for the explanation, that's so messed up that the apostles left behind would probably feast anyway those damn godhand..

Yeah, see, the Godhand gives you a choice in the matter but it really isn't a choice in the first place. Lmao That's why you brought up the fact that a lot of scheming goes into these events because they definitely manipulate the events leading up to by influencing the consciousness of humanity as a whole. Like Andrew Ryan said, we all make choices but in the end, our choices make us.

Hilariously enough one fan theory has it that GUTS is meant to be the real fifth member of the godhand and that Griffith's just a placeholder. The climax would see the Godhand make the offer to Guts when he's at his lowest.....and Guts rejects them, which ultimately throws their plans out of whack.

That's not a theory, just a "funny thought" someone had.
