This episode is part of the new serialization of Berserk that is being done without Kentarou Miura. It's based on some of the material he left behind as well as what he had told his close ones of the story over the years. Kouji Mori, his best friend and a fellow mangaka, writes and supervises the series while his former assistants draw it under the banner of Studio Gaga.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: This magazine is only in Japanese? I can't read Japanese, so why should I buy it?
A:
I can't read Japanese either. But if you want to follow along with the latest Berserk releases, getting this magazine is the only legal way to do it. Berserk's episodes run in these magazines months or years before they are collected into a volume. You can read our summaries on the forum and wait for our English text-based translations of each episode, available in a week or so after release.

Q: What do I need to set up an account on Hakusensha-E?
A:
A valid email address, a Chrome browser (or another browser with a built-in Japanese language translation), and a credit card. PayPal is not accepted at this time. Follow Aazealh's guide to learn more in-depth information on setting up an account.

Q: Purchasing requires my bank to do extra stuff because it's an international purchase. What do I do?
A:
This happens to many first-time customers to shops outside your country of origin. It's your bank flagging a new kind of transaction from a new country. To ensure that this transaction is valid, you may be asked for more information to verify your identity and your bank account. Afterward, this is an automatic process. If you have further questions, you can read VISA's guide on how this process works, or contact your bank.

The whole episode leaked, so here's a couple of things.

Gedflynn finally speaks, but he doesn't seem to say much, he thanks Rickert and then says that they're not used to the outside world anymore. Roderick finally asks how the Kushan empire is still standing, and Daiba says something along the lines of "our history is filled with conflicts of all kind, this is no different, we won't surrender". There's some sort of council (a kuriltai), during which the new emperor (I don't know if this is an accurate translation) asks Silat to share his knowledge on the West so that they can defeat the Hawk. They also kind of address the fact that the Bakiraka are in the Kushan capital and some of the leaders are trying to get rid of the Bakiraka (then why did they let them in?). Silat asks the new emperor to make him a general and lead the army to face Griffith, and the emperor says that only the Kushan are his equals, with their long history of war and magic. We then see thorns appear on one of the Kushan leaders' back. Farnese senses that something's wrong, and Guts' brand reacts to Rakshas' presence. Schierke's situation isn't dealt with, it's just mentioned. Also, Molda can fly on her broom. Didn't everyone from the island lose their powers?

Theres some interesting things in it. Im curious to see the translation now. Seems to have the classic "lets take an already existing scene and remake it again"

I think Mori and team might be under the impression that Fantasia wasn't a global event.
I think that they've forgotten everything that has happened in Berserk.
Btw I've looked up what a kuriltai is, and it's a Mongolian term used in medieval times for a military council. Since when did Kushan had anything to do with Mongolia?

I really don't have anything to comment on when it comes to the story. As many have said, this reads like its straight out of a fan-made manga... I mean technically speaking, it kind of is.

And I don't want to be that guy, since this is said almost after every episode. But I guess some of the faces and the overall art have improved to my eyes. I get much less of the feeling of complete unfamiliarity compared to the earlier episodes when looking at it. (There's also the chance that I've just forgotten how the previous episodes looked. Cause god knows I haven't re-read them.)
Though this really doesn't mean much besides the fact the episodes are getting easier to look at.
They're still just as hard to read, if not even harder because now the characters actually talk...

Now where have I seen that point before...

Speaking of similarities, that chest back-burster scene seemed really familiar as well. The guy appears to be having stomach troubles, and then POP. (What's actually happening though...? Did Rakshas secrete himself into the guy's food and then stomach?)

The art looks good on characters but the wider scenes of the city and architecture look pretty generic and basic to me. With a whole new setting like a Kushan capital, they could have put in a bit more effort. The new emperor's design is pretty bad. He looks like a deflated fat person.

Seems like a lot of Kushan politics. It'll be interesting to see what is said.

Really surprised by Rakshas inclusion. Who knows....but his bursting out into his giant form in a room full of people is very NOT how he would handle this situation at all. The infiltration idea makes sense....if he's there for Guts you'd think he'd do his fucking thing and sneak around. I feel like a much more interesting series of events could have occured, but it looks like they just want to take him out for good right now to move the story along.

Honestly, I'm kind of just happy to see the character again. I thought there was about an 85% chance they were just going to pretend he was defeated by Rickert for the sake of progressing the story. Interesting how they've reincorporated his old mask into the new design. I liked the idea that it was destroyed and he didn't have a problem changing his face. Seeing the new mask for the reveal but destroyed more was cool too....again...not sure how I feel about the reincorporation.

Just my typical list of unanswered/unanswerable questions:
  • How can Molda fly...? I thought the other magic users had lost/were losing their powers since the island fell apart?
  • Why would this guy allow Silat, an exile, to command Kushan troops?
  • Why is that goddamn table so large and empty?
  • How can these people sit and calmly discuss politics around a (very big) table, given the state of the world? This is an insane oversight, or to be charitable, an oversimplification. The world is plunged into chaos. No human civilization except Falconia can survive. That's the whole point of Fantasia. They've clearly managed it somehow. But... we've been in the Kushan capital for 3 episodes now, and it hasn't even been raised as an issue. That's insane!
  • Why would Rakshas have kept his old, cracked mask, when back in Falconia, he discarded his original mask after it had been damaged? Following the logic forward, he'd have emerged in 377 with a NEW mask.
  • Why would Rakshas emerge in his FULL APOSTLE form in broad daylight in a big crowd when he's known as a stealthy assassin type, and he's already expressed that he doesn't like to be seen? Emerging like this also complicates how they can scale up the fight in the upcoming episodes, they've already played the biggest card for that confrontation.
  • What the hell did that guy eat...? Did Rakshas walk around with little insect legs under his mask and slide up the guy's back before he emerged? It seemed more like he came OUT of the body. Right... How the hell did that happen?
  • What exactly is Farnese going to do to an apostle? I'm not discounting the possibility of her contributing something, it's just unprecedented for her to step confidently up to the plate. We know what her capabilities are. So this feels like hollow tension for now.
  • Why would Guts react like that to detecting an apostle, despite everything we saw of how he's defeated, has no fighting spirit in him—The man can't even fucking walk, but he gets a boner when he senses an apostle?

Well for the mystery of Rakshas, I wasnt too destabilize considering we saw him do some weird shits through the story. Makes me think how he appear just before killing some elephants at the battle against Ganishka's forces. Or how he appeared out of nowhere under zodd's wing.

To be honest, I kinda like that part from the continuation team.

As Walter mentionned though, they cant really scale up the fight that way but I figure they dont want to extrapolate on a fight cause you know, we need to move fast.

"This'll wake up Guts and then we move forward."...

So yeh, the intro of him coming back nice but not played perfectly of course.

I also like the fat kushan design cause its weird and I enjoy those kind of creepy drawings of people.

That's not comparable at all. We know Rakshas can make himself small: we see it when he first appears in volume 22. So him being stuck under Zodd's wing to quietly observe the scene isn't especially crazy. As for his actions during the battle of Vritannis, they're even less mysterious: he's a master of stealth and just poisons the elephants without getting caught.

Meanwhile, here he pops out of a guy's body and it's just mind-boggling because how did he get inside? He comes out of his back too, so what, was he in the lungs? How was the guy breathing? It just doesn't make sense.

I understand what you mean but I've always interpreted the elephants scene as strange because he seems to appear from nowhere. I have a hard time describing it in english but to me it seemed like he was materialising near the elephants before shooting the darts.

Ganishka was able to turn into mist/fog and get inside some of his "magic casters" so I figure it would not be that impossible if he used something similar.

That said, I know for sure it doesnt make that much sens and that we'll likely never get an explication for how the fuck he got there.

Its just not the worst thing of this episode for me. But I understand the confusion/what the fuck moment.

Ps: they probably did it for "shocked value" lol. But Im not takingg to much at heart. Im more disappointed that they made him turn inti his apostle form right from the start than him coming out of the guys body.

That's a reading comprehension problem on your part, I'm afraid. He's shown appearing suddenly because he was undetected, but it doesn't mean he materializes out of thin air.

That's not how Rakshas' power is shown working, and he's wearing a solid mask too. Clearly the guy didn't just inhale it.

I wonder if they changed the power dynamics of this place based on fan feedback. At least to me it seemed like Silat was somehow in charge of everyone earlier, but now he's just a clan leader after all and these nobles kinda came out of nowhere.

Not necessarily based on fan feedback, but I also had the same thought, and it's not the first time. It feels like they regularly try to fix problems introduced in an episode in the next one(s). Somehow that also weirdly tracks with Mori's comment in his latest interview, when he says he often remembers important stuff after an episode is done. Not sure it's what he meant, but it made me think of it.

Until now, Silat was throwing his weight around and deciding everything. But here he's just one guy on this new council ruled over by a new emperor with tons of clan leaders we've never heard of. It's not clear how he has any authority at all in the city outside of his own clan. In fact, when they learn he's from the Bakiraka, most of them want to have him dispatched.

By the way, none of these new guys are given names, it's only titles. I genuinely wonder whether any of them will survive the next few episodes.

I thought at some point that he could become liquid like but thats a bit far fetched anyway.

Yeah you're probably right. I tried too much to fit it logically and I did not think about that mask aspect. :sweatdrop:

Thanks for the input!

We've reached the point where they have to retcon their own retcon. This is a whole new level I never thought possible.
