Episode 380

One thing I have a doubt is, Guts reaction is just pretty out of character for him. Like sure, one of the biggest motivation for Guts is also revenge but did he truly expect to match Griffith?
I mean, Guts himself is aware of his deteriorating physical condition.

And then, No thoughts about Casca's well being either.

You know what's funny about Miura's hiatus infamy?

If you take the time between the first episode of Berserk and episode 363 (I'm excluding the posthumous episode 364), you end up with roughly 31 years and 4 months (from October 1989 to around February 2021). That's 376 months. Within this time Miura released 378 episodes of Berserk. That's slightly over one episode per month. And I'm even excluding episode 83, Gigantomaxia, and Duranki.

Berserk's early releases were double or triple-sized, so if you want to equate them to the episodes that were published in Young Animal it's more like there were 44 in total, bringing the total to 407 if you want to exclude episode 364. And he also published three single volume stories in those early days, which ought to be counted in addition to Gigantomakhia.

It's also worth mentioning that Miura worked 16 hours a day, six to seven days a week. He kept a regular release schedule for Berserk until his forties, when he slowed down due to age and health concerns. As for the particular dearth of releases in his last few years, it had a number of reasons: the change of mediums from analog to digital, the endeavor to recruit and train assistants to better help him, plus related side projects like Duranki. It would not have lasted indefinitely, given that his stated goal for all of these was to be able to speed up his work. All this to say that I don't think "infamy" is the right term.

I know. The point of my comment was to illustrate that even tough so many people associate Berserk with hiatuses, it's the furthest thing from it.

Even though Berserk had a bi-weekly release cycle during the first half of its publication, most readers (including myself) have known it as a monthly series. And considering its scale and quality, it's reasonable to generally consider it a monthly series. With that in mind, having an average of an episode per month in its entire publication run is the best you can expect. Which was delivered. That's what my comment was about, except with fewer words.

As for Miura's professionalism and scale of work: In 1991 alone he published roughly 25 episode's worth of pages (517 pages). And it's not the only year when Miura truly went above an beyond.

Considering all this, it's always upsetting when I see these comments and "jokes" and such regarding hiatuses. Especially when it's used to excuse Studio Gaga's atrocious release schedule. This I'll never understand.

I just realized that Guts was already wishing to die in ep. 378.

This dialogue felt out of place back then, because I couldn't understand who was saying these things. This also means that Guts looking angry at the end of ep. 377 makes even less sense now.

This doesn't make sense either, though. These lines are a repeat of what Rakshas says on the previous page, and the fact it starts with "そう…" implies acknowledgment of said repetition, so that if it's Guts thinking it, it means he's heard what Rakshas said and is agreeing with him. Which is not possible because they're in different buildings. Of course, nonsensical stuff is everywhere in the Continuation at this point, so it doesn't really matter one way or the other.

It doesn’t make sense for that to be Guts’ thoughts. Instead, it’s the ending to the sentence Rakshas begins on the previous page.

You're both right. I forgot about that panel where Rakshas says the exact same thing out loud.
