Okay, hi, Jackson Hurley here,

I wanted to start this thread because I really like music and I like to share what I discover and to discover what other people have to share. Now black metal is probably one of the only metal genre i am listening to so please if this isn't about black metal refer yourself to the metal thread (yeah I know there is one).

I am mostly gonna here about metal noir Quebecois (black metal form Quebec province) mostly because I live here but that doesn't mean the discussion is gonna stop there. Share your black metal bands from you contry or area if you know some... I'm really interested in what other regions have to offer in that genre..

Now I know there might be debates as if that band is black metal or not I don,t care! I like debates!

First band I'll name is Forteresse. A patriotic "metal noir Quebecois" band
I'll let you search it on youtube it'll be easier that way.
All right I'll help a bit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtR5w7r9bTE enjoy

Now share and discuss! It'll be fun!

Wooo, alrighty lets discuss Blackmetal!

Forteresse's debut is pretty good, it's the only album I own. Speaking of justCanadian BM, how about Revenge, Sorcier des Glaces, Weapon, Gris, Blasphemy, Utlagr, Conqueror, happy go lucky Woods Of Ypres to name a few? Canadian DM though ... *sigh* ... so good.

Check Aosoth's new album out and this video is one of the best I've seen in months - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=me6jwsEPKXc ... fits the music SO well. But hey, I'd give Satyricon's Mother North the crown ^_~, Immortal videos don't count haha.

I have a few go-to albums but we'll go by your thread rules.

Even the black metal bands back in the day couldn't agree on what black metal was. Some said if it wasn't satanic it wasn't black metal, others said it was just the sound and some stylistic elements. What camp do you support? :)

Everything Satanic didn't need to sound like BM and conversely BM isn't defined by Satanic themes/ lyrics/ ideology - that's my opinion. For me, it's all about the sound versus the concept. This isn't Grindcore which is a politically driven sub-genre. Within BM you have various genres like Pagan, Satanic, Depressive, Atmospheric, Death/ Black, NS ... and so forth. They don't have to be Satanic to be BM. How the genre began and the old stigma of what it was has changed quite a lot.

I know and like Sorcier des Glaces (new album this autumn by the way) Gris (new album in July) There is also Sombres Forêts that's very good. they are playing a show at Quebec and in Montreal soon.

Heard the new Abigor anyone? Thoughts?

Been out of the BM loop this year, Nightcrawler any reccos? I hear Numinous have a new one coming out. Not quite listened to that BAN split yet.

Can't wait for Mare Cognitum to release their new one (sounds massive and pretty) - https://soundcloud.com/i-voidhanger-records/mare-cognitum-phobos-monolith-album-teaser

A SPELL TO WARD OFF THE DARKNESS, directed by artists Ben Russell and Ben Rivers, follows an unnamed character through three seemingly disparate moments in his life. With little explanation, we join him in the midst of a 15-person collective on a small Estonian island; in isolation in the majestic wilderness of Northern Finland; and during a concert as the singer and guitarist of a black metal band in Norway. Marked by loneliness, ecstatic beauty and an optimism of the darkest sort. Starring musician Robert AA Lowe (best known for his intense live performances under the name LICHENS) in the lead role, A SPELL lies somewhere between fiction and non-fiction – it is at once a document of experience and an experience itself, an inquiry into transcendence that sees the cinema as a site for transformation.

Looks interesting.
