Mass Effect 2

This is probably old to most of you guys, but it's too awesome not to be here.

Haha yeah it's pretty good. The delivery of the announcer on Illium is spot-on too. If I had to name one area where ME2 over-delivered past any possible expectations it's the humor department.

This game would be the ONLY reason I'd get a XBOX360. IDK much about it but it reminds me of Star Control II.

Just finished ME 2, an epic game that's for sure. Three things I didn't like:
1) All characters other than Shepard can't change their armor. One set of armor for the whole game, I mean you can cycle appearance a bit by gaining their trust, but the only thing you change is color. :puck:
2)You gain experience only after the mission, usual system would have been nice, where you just gain experience for killing enemies.
3) Small amount of guns.
Except this things the game is just gorgeous, oh, and sex scenes are also fucking lame... :void:

Just replying to say I'd seen this and found it as awesome as you did. That and...

I'm curious to know to what degree all you Commander Shepards agree with this.

He's mostly right on on all points.

I didn't really mind probing the planets. But I acknowledge I'm in the minority. And the action is quite a bit more challenging than he lets on. Maybe it was because I played a Vanguard on Hard, but I certainly died a few times, and I wouldn't call it overly easy. He also doesn't do a fair job explaining the opposition in the game, and makes it sound fabricated.
At the end of ME1, it was very clear that peace hadn't been achieved. The reapers were still lurking out there, and we always expected them or something controlled by them to attack.
He makes it sound like without the appearance of the Collectors, all would be peachy. Not the case.

Otherwise, he picks on the obvious nuanced problems of the game that we've already discussed here, but writes off the good portions, which I suppose I should have expected.

PS: The "Just want to be friends" sign got a lol out of me. Sounds like he was a Liara fan too

I've probably said this here before, but I'd really like these reviewers to start specifying a little bit more instead of just saying the gameplay of the game is not so good. This is mostly weird when reviewing a game like Mass Effect, in which battles are not the only parts you're playing the game. Of course, if he meant ALL the gameplay aspects are still flailing around (dialogues, planet probing, upgrades, gun fights, hacking, walking around the Normandy and planets), never mind what I said.

I didn't think it was that bad either, and the chance of finding an abnormal signal was a nice touch. Maybe when the Hammerhead is released, it'll get less tedious gathering minerals (assuming it will be kinda like the Mako missions).

Yahtzee isn't really a reviewer, he just makes short videos nitpicking details of popular games. It's simply for entertainment purposes.

Well let's see. =)

The first minute of his review is spent reminiscing about the sex scene controversy of the first game and complaining the sex scenes of the second game don't feature as much non-frontal nudity. Which I commented on myself, but am not sure is related to the controversy in question, considering the people who started it hadn't even played the game back then and just whined about "lesbian sex". The scenes in ME2 were still more elaborate overall.

Shepard is a space vampire, hahaha oh boy, hilarious. His explanation of the first game / second game transition is botched. Like Walter said, the ending of ME1 leaves no doubt as to what is to come.

He complains that upgrades should be acquired by "shooting enemies in the face". They are actually acquired like that to some degree, since you find them during missions. Then you have to "research" them which is in essence to reverse engineer them so that all your team members can be equipped with them. That requires minerals which have to be mined/found.

According to him, wandering around on the Mako was an important part of the gameplay (but he hated it and didn't mind seeing it disappear), however now that it's gone the gameplay is somehow too easy? I don't quite get this, because really the Mako segments were never really hard, and ME2 is generally a more challenging game than ME1.

His point about the Paragon/Renegade system isn't correct because both sides of the spectrum lend you the same possibilities when it comes to romance options or whatever point he was trying to make. The only difference comes with QTE moments during cinematics, and you can get most if not all of these by playing like "you" would (I did).

Lastly, I've played most acclaimed TPS games, from RE4 to the Gears of War series and I do not think ME2's gameplay "flails around" more than theirs does. As for the probing minigame, it represent maybe 5% of the game?

Honestly I think he could have made some more pertinent points, or at least worded them better. I refer you to our own complaints in this thread. :slan:

I thought it was funny, but all of his points are either things a lot of people agree with [Planet Scanning] or just complaints, the game play/writing sucks. I'm disappointed, Yahtzee, didn't jump all over how retarded it looks to fly your mini-Normandy around the map or the length of the game. To me it doesn't look like he actually played the game in the first place, but just wrought it based off other reviews or complaints from other fans.

I don't think people really disliked it. I liked it a lot more since it mattered collecting the material in the first place and it helped getting me into the setting of a Space Cowboy.

My girlfriend was probing the planets while I was studying, so I could afford all the upgrades I found. :iva:

By the by, Jack just keeps dying and dying in the end, is there a way to not let it happen?

I didn't gain either of their trust but they survived while others died. I was pretty pissed over that...

That's odd. I finished suicide mission three times, first time Grunt, Mordin, Jack and Zaeed died, then I made different decisions so it was only Jack(I didn't send anyone escorting dr. Chakwas), third time I thought that was it, I need to send her with doctor, but then again she died... I take her with me she dies, I send her with doc she dies, I let her stay with the rest of the team and hold the door she dies...

Well, as long as you don't have everyone's trust it might be inevitable that some members fall.
