Movies to look forward to

Griffith you should see the movie. You might like it. :serpico:

Yeah, I might, as I've said, I certainly enjoy the director's previous work. By that token, is it better than Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz? Cause, as much as I like and recommend them, they're not 9's in my book either.

I love Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, and I would say this movie is just as good, and I'm not really one to say its better. But out of the movies I would say this movie is his most unique. I think its too early right now to say its better. As you know its a matter of taste.

Agreed, that's too soon to rate anything so highly. A positive initial viewing experience can be affected by any number of internal and external forces that have nothing to do with the quality of the movie, no guarantee it will hold up to the test of time. Goes the other way as well, maybe I should watch Lost in Translation again to see if I still think it's horrendously overrated.

So I'm told... for lack of empirical reasons. :iva:

like Dwarf's aforementioned 8.5 for Predators

I think my 8.5 came from the fact that compared to the recent Predator outings in the AVP movies, it felt more like a Predator movie more along the lines of the first Predator movie. Thus why I gave it a "B" :guts:

I liked Predators much more than Scott Pilgrim. Maybe that'll help you gauge what to expect from Scotty, Griff :carcus:

The way the stupid "Black Super Predator" looked really killed this movie for me. A big random monster. It had many, many bad parts, but that monster costume just made it completely unbearable to me and I like Predator 2's bonus dance sequence more than Predators. I know it has already been discussed, sorry.

BTW why do we have two Movies to Dread topics now? :troll:

As the saying goes, feelings are deceiving. Though much better, it was still closer to AvP than Predator, as I laid out in my review.

Oh, switching to letter grade now, eh? I'll take that as a minor mea culpa, since letter grade percentage doesn't directly correlate to the scale of ten, where five is generally considered neutral or average. That makes your rating of Predators more like a 6.5 or 7. It's indeed a B movie, though.

Also, just for the hell of it:

Scale of Ten to Letter Grade Conversion
01= F
02= F+/D-
03= D
04= D+/C-
05= C
06= C+/B-
07= B
08= B+/A-
09= A
10= A+

Nah, not so much, since my standards and expectations for Scott Pilgrim aren't nearly the same as Predators. I might like Scott Pilgrim more, for what it is. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if was just straight up better in that wild and crazy ride way you spoke of earlier.

The Predators in Predators didn't act like Predators. I don't think this can be discussed enough! Particularly how it's somehow like the original Predator when it doesn't even get the Predator part right. It had a jungle and the same music, that's about the extent of how they were similar. In Predator parlance, you could call it camouflage, but since there isn't a Predator underneath, it's really more like a scarecrow or dummy to lure you into a trap. Worked on us!

It's always been this way in here, it's what inspired the dread thread in the first place. :ganishka:

Here's the trailer for Black Swan - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jaI1XOB-bs&feature=topvideos

Mila Kunis <3
Natalie Portman <3
Winona Ryder <3

But, the trailer gives us waaay too much for my liking. It sort of looks predictable, but the acting looks pretty good.

Yeah, I'll probably check that out when it comes around.

That looks like it might not be bad. I'll have to see it when it comes out.

I've been a fan of the original Predator movie ever since I was a little boy. And now, all these years later and despite all of Hollywood's recent attempts (the AvPs and Predators), you sir have done the unimaginable: destroyed my love for the predator. :judo: :ganishka:

I'll see this with some friends that missed the imax 3d experience. Plus additional footage. I know it's just way to rake in more money, but... damn this never happens.

Hehe, as a fan of Avatar I may have to check it out one more time in theaters. :guts:

Avatar on Blu Ray is just so crisp and for whatever it is, it's a good product.

Yeah, the Blu-ray release is amazing and you don't miss the 3D one bit. I can't wait for the more extensive version this Christmas. :guts:

Its only 8 minutes of additional footage, but if its more creatures, extra action scenes and that sex scene, then that should be cool.

Will see it, but my expectations are just moderate. I feel like I'm wired up a little differently when it comes to Aronofsky. I never got people's obsession with Requiem for a Dream and The Wrestler. Pi and The Fountain are easily his best movies to me, but those generally recieve less praise.

Vampire sex and blue alien sex. That's what's best in life, isn't it? :badbone:

RFAD wasn't bad (good soundtrack) and The Wrestler was a good heartfelt story, backed up with some real performances. Now Pi, or The Fountain are on a different plane, but unconventional, and not commercial at all. Hence, the popularity tilts to the other side. Pi's pretty popular among Sci-Fi people imo. The soundtrack for The Fountain is superb.

EDIT: Speaking of Sci-Fi, I wish they made more movies like Moon these days. I instantly reminded me of the old school style of story telling, where they'd take risks.

EDIT: 2

This movie looks pretty good ... it's called Buried, and it was received pretty well at Sundance, the 2nd trailer's here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWVoUBgVcf8&feature=search

I'm more interested in seeing it in 3D on the big screen one last time, but hopefully the additions are decent and actually add to the movie instead of take away from it. I thought it was fine the way it was, but apparently Jim disagrees. :iva:

In case someone missed seeing it ... Super 8

Looks decent ne :iva:

I can't wait for Spielberg to start working on Interstellar to be honest.

No, I didn't know that!! Whoa! THAT is good news for sure. The movie had this great old school atmosphere and story-telling, and I agree with you on the OST.

Check this out - MONSTERS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njeofv4dr9Q

The opening scenes remind me of District 9, but then it goes off into Cloverfield mode without the jerking camera. Sorta looks promising ...

I was at the movies on Friday to catch Piranha 3D ... guys, the movie is ridonculous with it's cheese, gore, and laughs because it's so much fun ... lots of tits, and a few familiar faces from the porn industry :slan:

Saw Machete tonight. It was pretty cool. Not nearly as bad as some might think. I actually think it could have had more action and as far as blood and gore it wasn't nearly as bad as some other Rodriguez pictures. It was actually closer to Desperado more than anything else. I'll post more later but it was pretty funny and Danny Trejo was without a doubt badass, despite having the least amount of dialog in the movie.
