Movies to look forward to

Actually yeah, I would be down for that. Why the hell not? Go for something new instead of the garbage they keep rehashing.

Garbage? What are you talking about, I've got your pure Batman detectiving right here:

We'll be getting more of this soon! :carcus:

Ugh, I'm just skeptical that it's really the answer we think or that anyone will pull it off cinematically if half the time they can't even handle Batman just beating guys up. I guess Nolan's is technically the best in this regard by default for the aforementioned sneaking around, stake outs and using forensics, but it's still pretty perfunctory and quite the low bar.

Now THIS is still the most cinematically pleasing and balanced Batman (though this restoration kind of fucks with the lighting/mood):

I love that the uncrackable case is like the second thing one would guess. You can tell he's a real detective though because he keeps his evidence files in a manila envelope he hands over to beautiful dames. :badbone:

You mean that shot of his ass in spandex when he dons the suit? Can't wait. :azan:

Oh I mean I'm sure 1) it won't happen 2) they'd mess it up. But I can still wish for it haha. I think it could be great if done right, but whatever. And I'll be honest I remember almost nothing from the Nolan movies, that's how mediocre I think they were.

You know that I agree. =)

Well, at least it's not as bad as the gay porn parody:

Lol wait this was actually the next theatrical release!

Well, to be fair then, other than generic snoopin' around or eavesdropping this is probably the most intense detective work Batman has done on film to date:

Which isn't at all a focus in the movie, so I pretty much agree on the Nolan trilogy with the exception of The Dark Knight as a standalone that's way better than the other two League of "Shadows" centered ones (Begins is ok, and Rises pretty much sucks, but then when I at look what came just before I'm grateful they got it to the level of mediocre). So, The Dark Knight, Burton's 1989 version, and Mask of the Phantasm are the ones to beat here, and if they make Batman a volatile, young, two-fisted detective that'll go a long way.

They should have used a remix of "Murder" from The Eclipse. :carcus:

I was also unmoved. Not a great trailer, it made it seem typical and pedestrian, like a middle of the road superhero movie (hey, it's Drax and Aquaman! =). Even the sandworm at the end, which I was waiting for, underwhelmed. Hopefully, the actual movie is made of better stuff than the sales pitch gives it credit, but the odds don't favor that.

I thought the trailer was solid enough. I'm certainly not expecting the definitive film adaptation of Dune from Mr. Villeneuve but hopefully, at least, I'm treated to an enjoyable time at the theaters.

I still haven't seen any signs of Feyd-Rautha yet; I wonder if he's been written out of part 1.

Chalamet as Paul just isn't working for me. He looks like a weepy kid recovering from a breakup. He does not evoke a natural leader, as he should.

Also there's a problematic implication from the voice over from Paul and Mohiam that Leto is some failed planetary ruler. It's pretty far from the mark in the setup of the novel. I get that they're abbreviating things for the movie, but it makes Leto sound like a loser, and I find it gross.

But bigger than these issues, even splitting the novel up into two, there are ample moments for visual spectacle that just aren't hinted at here. And say what you will of Villeneuve, his Blade Runner looked striking. That's the least of which I expected from this adaptation, but I didn't really see anything like that.

On what planet will you be enjoying this in theaters? =)

Also, lets expect a little more from our big adaptations, otherwise there's little point. There are better ways to just have a good time than middling adaptations of Dune.

Yeah, didn't want to pre-judge but he was lame.

Yeah, compare this to the imagery and splendor of the 2049 trailer and there is no comparison. For whatever reason this simply doesn't look special, but like some B team superhero or sci-fi flick where everything is kinda dull. It makes me think they have budget issues or something with splitting it up.

I mean, I hope it turns out this is nothing and the substance of the film is awesome, but it's a high standard and not evident from this preview.

I'm not impressed at all by the Dune trailer. I dont think the actor playing Paul has any presence and the art design is as generic as it comes. I'm surprised at the lack of grandiosity in the trailer as well. I was expecting some gorgeous camera work but what was presented did nothing for me. I really love what I've seen of Villeneuve but this trailer did nothing for me. Really fell miles short of what I was expecting

Doesn't look like it's making any great strides beyond Lynch's Dune. That sandworm is dull and uninspired. Everyone seems miscast. Yawwwnn.

So I guess Villeneuve is the new remake guy now huh. I didn't care for the new Blade Runner and I'm surprised actually at how many people seem to praise it (even my dad who I saw it with in theaters really enjoyed it, even though he fell asleep for about 20 minutes in the middle lol).

Oh and that music in the trailer? Yea this trend is getting annoying too, of using slowed down, big chorus remixes of classic songs in epic movie trailers. If they must, just use the original.

Hope it's just the trailer editing but yeah, I expect a lot more showcasing of the world, architecture, technology, the Sand Worm, the costuming, etc. Not just blurry grey dull "action" shots and Inception THUUUUUM sounds. More Amano/Moebius less "Western fantasy RPG concept art." At least try to beat Lynch who was miserable working on his version. I expected at least the color-grading to look interesting after watching Bladerunner 2049...

I guess I either want Jodorowsky's insane stupid art project film but with Sting in a gold bikini bottom or Legend of the Galactic Heroes subtle history documentary style with understated but good acting, not MCU middling snoozefest. I'd even rather see the Sci-Fi miniseries but with this budget so the CGI doesn't look like a local furniture commercial. I still hope that somehow the trailer is really misleading.

That bothered me a lot too.

Yeah I didn't want to sound too nitpicky but even their sandworm didn't impress. Honestly, I was pessimistic about this adaptation from the start after being repeatedly disappointed by Villeneuve's recent work, and I'm sad to see I was right. I guess at least that will get more people to read the book...

This is the one part that was always guaranteed to not measure up. The Dune (1984) soundtrack is my all-time favorite, it's simply unmatched. Whatever Zimmer produces will fall short of it.

My brain read this like, "Even the sandworm seems miscast." :ganishka:

Good nap movie; two thumbs up!

I was disappointed initially but kind of grew to accept it for what it was. To be fair, it's way better than this looks so far.

Admittedly this is a trend that got old more than a decade ago. :ganishka:

Speaking of replicants, Westworld basically made an entire show based around this practice, and they did it prominently, read: obnoxiously, in the Snyder Cut trailer recently. It's almost always terrible whether you love or hate the song; either you think it's a bad fit for the song or for the movie.

I think the most successful modern pop soundtracks this side of Tarantino are the GotG soundtracks, and they just used the original songs as Oburi said. In particular a clever rearrangement of The Chain to score the trailer of GotG 2 was impressive. Tarantino himself did something similar with Vanilla Fudge's You Keep Me Hangin' On to score the climatic sequence of Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood. Clearly they needed to cast Kurt Russell in Dune.

How about the rest of Dune '84? :carcus: Think this will make it look better just for being out there?

Honestly? Maybe. It's a flawed movie and it aged pretty badly, but at least it's not a sterile snoozefest. That said I do hope this new one is less of a disaster than the trailer indicates.

84 Dune is a mess but there is a version that is not only watchable, it's actually pretty damn good. I'm not one to promote fanedits but since Lynch disowned this movie anyway, I think it's fair game. It's called the Spicediver version and it creates a more focused, less jumbled narrative closer to the books using footage from the different versions released, deleted scenes, and appendices like special features as well newly created title cards for separating the movie according to the books. Also removed all the annoying internal voice overs. It's not bad and I think it's probably the best way to watch that movie. I always enjoyed aspects of it, like the Baron who gave me nightmares as a kid. Some of the creature effects are really cool too.

Might as well compare the trailers:

Frankly, the new Villeneuve version doesn't appear to be much different in substance, but is somehow more dull looking. Meanwhile the original '84 trailer is painful by comparison, it looks like old Battlestar Galactica even though it came out a year after Return of the Jedi.

I should really have a bigger takeaway than, "Is that the worst-looking version of Reptile being a jobber for fucking Kano?" And kind of dreading either answer (it might be worse if they put a reptilian proxy in but NOT actually Reptile =). That's where we are though. Mortal Kombat, you ripped out my heart.

Anyway, it looks quality enough that it could be good otherwise, costume design and effects look decent, etc, but I doubt the script will get it there just because it's a tall order and it doesn't seem excellent in that regard. The whole Cole Young "new main character" thing is a major red flag and unforced error (you had to make up a new character instead of using one of the dozen or so established ones? What is this, the 90s?) unless he becomes Johnny Cage at the end, which would still be weird. The dragon mark thing is dumb too, but not a big deal if everything else is rad as hell. I don't know, I'll keep an open mind but I haven't been particularly anticipating this as much as dreading it and am guessing it will be more awkward or painful than exhilarating for me to watch.

I'll wait for Predator or Rambo to show up in the sequel to this. The plot feels silly (dragon mark) and I hope the action sequences make it worth checking out. They have so much cool stuff to choose from if they reference the recent games. I'll be honest, watching the trailer makes me want to re-watch the original 95 film - so much nostalgia with the soundtrack, bad effects (which were pretty cool at the time) and Tagawa as Shang Tsung was iconic - "Your soul is mine" is unforgettable!
