My speculation on the end of Fantasia Arc

Fantasia is the "ongoing" arc in Berserk, though not in the way it was intended. Miura, in December 2020, mentioned that the current party phase is coming to an end and a confrontation with Femto was imminent. We saw that shaping up in the last episode he wrote : 364.Teardrop of Morning Dew.

I do not take anything that came after that episode as authentic. However, based on the interview Miura gave in December 2020, I am speculating how Fantasia might have shaped up and ESPECIALLY how it might have ended. The ending part, in my humble opinion is mighty important because each arc, with exception of Black Swordsman Arc, till date ends in a world altering event.

1. Golden Age Arc ends with Eclipse, Demonic Advent, Demonification of Griffith and thus Completion of Godhand. This was once in 216 (??) years event and its impact was seen world over, including Holy See where it "fulfilled" signs of hawk and prophecy of hawk.

2. Conviction Arc. The last chapter ie Rebirth Ceremony ends in incarnation of Femto via Egg of the World. An event that occurred 1000 years ago too. It was fulfilling the purpose of "rebirth of world". It again was a world level event which accelerated whatever Godhand's plan is.

3. Millenium Falcon Arc: Ends in pop of the Ganishka's Twice Reborn Shiva form and merger of real and Astral world into Fantasia. An event so massive that its ripples were seen everywhere.

So, based on above pattern, it is natural to expect something similar should happen in Fantasia Arc. I speculate that, yes, it would have but with a twist. It would have been retelling of story of skull knight or what happened 1000 years. Miura himself mentioned in Dec 2020 interview that he wanted story to be centered on Skull Knight next and I believe after completion of Elf Island chapter, the next chapter in Fantasia would have been on Skull Knight's past story.

An interesting part is, how these would have been bridged? As in how would the narration shift from present to past? My speculation is, that in the confrontation between Guts and Femto, we would have witnessed that Guts is not there yet to face a Godhand, even with his Berserk armour, or the cost of facing Godhand with berserk armor on is simply too high (as in death). Either Skull knight would have intervened or some other denizen of Elf Island would have intervened. May be even combined forces of Skull Knight and Guts would have proven insufficient. May be SkullKnight (or rather his armor?) would have been destroyed in the process? Either way, we would have found Godhand like Femto to be too powerful.

In the aftermath, we would have seen a paradise lost kind of scenario (because Miura did mention that "Party or gathering phase" would be over) and perhaps Guts would have left with either SkullKnight or someone like Guru Gedfring or Hanrarr or a combination, separated from his team. And then we would have moved into past narration about Skull Knight with an intent to arrive at the epiphemy as how can the seemingly impossible difference between Godhands and Guts be filled.

And that brings us the last and most important point of this post : the world changing event at the end of Arc. It would have been destruction of capital of Gaiseric in one night and 1000 year old "eclipse"/incarnation event that we got glimpse of in the vision of death episode leading to separation of Astral world and physical world and how it was achieved last time and under what circumstances.

With this all the past threads would have been tied, leading to the next arc that would be preparing and leading to confronting and defeating Godhands and their master plan.

I welcome your opinions on my speculation.

I don't think Miura intended for the events of a thousand years ago to be told in a lengthy flashback spanning several volumes.

Thats a very fair point. Till this point we have not seen a long flash back arc or even chapter (or even episode?) in Berserk.

Well I mean there was the entire Golden Age, that's a long-ass flashback. :ganishka:
But it was an exception, and it centered on the main character(s) of the story. The rise and fall of Gaizeric would have been condensed to the essentials.

He was a really efficient storyteller. I'd say 1.5 volumes.

Yeah... maybe even less. The Corridor of Dreams only took 8 episodes.

Somehow, Golden Age never felt like flashback to me. Like Guts reminiscing. It felt like Black Swordsman so of previews the story and then we see everything from beginning.

I get what you're saying but... it is a flashback. And the Black Swordsman arc is the beginning of the story, not a preview.

Hey, btw, I forgot to ask. Do you believe end of Fantasia was planned as a something of a big bang? Like most of past arcs were?

And if yes, what would it have been? Like is destruction of Skellig Island an event big enough to end Fantasia?

The Elf Island chapter was, when Miura-sensei passed away, the only one in the Fantasia arc. So I don't think our characters leaving Skellig would have marked the end of the arc. In fact I'd say there's no chance for that to be the case, because we hadn't really seen much of Fantasia yet. It would have been the end of the chapter for sure, but the arc would have at least had a second one.

To me the bigger question is whether Fantasia would have been the final arc in the series or not. I think Miura may have intended it to be.

I've always thought "Elf Island" chapter would've been followed up by a "Supreme Emperor" chapter or something akin to that. I think Skully's flashback would have fit being in the Fantasia arc since the world of Berserk 1000 years ago is supposed to resemble its current iteration. After that, the story would've necessitated exploration of the mainland. Safe to say this Fantasia arc wasn't even close to done, quite a lot of fantastical stuff to delve into.

Whoa! That would mean we were one or two chapters away from end!!!! ?

At 150ish episodes, I will not call Fantasia too long.

So about 60-65 episodes of Elf Island chapter. May be another 30-40 episodes in some kind of Bakiraka fortress chapter with SK's back story told on the way or something similar. And then 40-50 episode in the final chapter. It would have been perfect.

I thought the same too, hence this thread. But now I believe that SK's backstory would be much more condensed and would be narrated as Guts moves to some other place following destruction of Elf Island. Likely, Bakiraka fortress.

Depending on their length, that's quite plausible. The Elf Island chapter had 57 episodes (7 volumes) when Miura passed away, and it wasn't over yet. There's no telling how long it would have been, so it might have beat Falconia as the longest one yet. And if you look at the trend, each chapter since Birth Festival was longer than the last. Based on that, two more chapters seems reasonable.

Let me make two comments: First off, are you absolutely sure the island was meant to be destroyed like what we saw in the Continuation? Ask yourself what you'd expect if you had not read it. Second, are you sure SK's backstory could not have been told while the island was "under attack" in one way or another? After all, that island has a lot of ties to his past, with Danan chief among them.
