New Bond movie- Casino Royale

So far this movie has been rolling in stellar reviews. It's hanging in the mid 90%s over at Rotten Tomatoes with the only negative review thus far starting out: "This is a Bond with great body but no soul." Did the other Bond movies have souls?

I can't explain why I'm even rooting for this movie. I wasn't going to see it at all before it got a great review from a good friend, a total Bond dork, too. Maybe I'm just sick of all the negative press new movies tend to get (of which I'm guilty as well). Either way, I'm compelled and I'll be seeing it this weekend.

Not since Her Majesty's Secret Service

Though that review is ironic, since many reviews are praising the film for how deep the Bond Character is in this film. Also it seems that this film is a more drastic shift from the Bronson films.

Saw it last night and thought it was excellent. It had a very different feel from the Bond movies of the past (especially compared to the most recent ones) and it was interesting to see Bond as a "double-O newbie." I thought Craig did a great job and I honestly can't wait until the next one. :guts:

Yeah, I thought that the movie was great, too. Considering the fact that in "Casino Royale" James Bond has been depicted as an agent who've just been promoted to "Double 0" status, it was an excellent way for Daniel Craig to start off as Bond, as well.

Saw it again tonight with my family.  Still thought it was fantastic.  Definitely gonna pick this one up when it hits DVD early next year.

It should be working now. Here's my personal link to it. Sometimes filelodge goes down for a few hours because of the bandwidth.

Well I can top that eyeroller; I haven't seen it at all and it's my favorite Bond movie, the best ever as a matter of fact!

Why... are you rolling your eyes?

I saw it last weekend and really dug it. My girlfriend hated it because it doesn't follow the unofficial Bond movie rulebook. It does its own thing, and to me this is beneficial. The campiness was what was really holding the Brosnan movies back. This flick's a great action movie in addition to being a good Bond movie.

Oh, and Craig blew me away. I was really expecting a terrible performance, but Craig took his biggest weakness and turned it right around to his greatest strength: inexperience. I was rooting for him as he meandered his way through action scenes like the airport chase more than I ever could for someone as polished as Connery's Bond. Of course, the price paid is that Craig hasn't earned the right to be as professional or suave as the still-champ, Connery. I suppose that's intentional, and will come in time, and sequels.

But really... Best Bond movie? I don't think so. I've read some reviews that felt that way and I just don't get it. Great action movie? Yes. A much-needed return to the basics for the franchise? Absolutely. BEST EVER? Not by far. Goldfinger is still #1 to me.

I'm really looking forward to sequels, and hopefully, [hide] S.P.E.C.T.E.R.E! [/hide] :troll:

hey Walter, if you have the chance, download the song. Just want to know if there are other people that dig it as much as I do. I don't know, maybe it's because I like Chris Cornell.

Yeah it seems Walter had a similar experience as mine (except my girlfriend really liked it). It also seemed to have a grittiness in it not seen since Dr. No in which Bond is roughed up more than ever before, obviously attributed to him being rough around the edges. I feel compelled to call it the darkest in some respects.

And it seems that my "comparison" with Her Majesty's Secret Service had more to it than I thought, since they both end with [hide]the woman whom Bond falls in love with getting killed at the end of the film, though HMSS is more bittersweet[/hide]

Also, I agree that the film isn't quite the same level as the best of the Connery films, though I can understand how someone could feel that way as this film definitely has more class and better writing than any of the more recent films

edit by Wally: Added CORRECT spoiler tags. UGH! Preview your posts people!!! I'm sick of having to spell this sort of stuff out. ANNOUNCE YOUR SPOILERS.....

Or the very last movie where Bond spent months being tortured in a Korean prison (spoiler :???:)? Yeah, I'm sure he got more roughed up than that, or was edgy or whatever, I don't care if he kills younglings :carcus:, I'm immune to the hype.

What I'm not immune to is people spoiling the fucking movie needlessly for some abstract comparison that people would get if they'd seen both movies and you wouldn't need to potentially spoil it anyway. The very nature of revealing such information is to tell people that AREN'T aware, there wasn't even any analysis to justify it. Adding insult to injury, a pathetic spoiler alert, especially since we have spoiler tag: [hide][/hide]. If you didn't know them, you shouldn't have posted it, or used some more creative spacing. Anyway, no use bitching about it anymore, but it seems to never end, so new rule at SK.net, and I'm sure Aaz will love it (not Wally, see next parenthetical); you spoil something, you lose all your posts (unless you're Wally, since he's a big fat spoiler waiting to happen =).

Well, I can't say I don't. :guts: Anyway, all these reviews got me impatient to see that movie. Hopefully I'll manage to soon.

This movie, while being a Bond flick, really doesn't feel like it most of the time. Which isn't bad, persay, it just gives it an interesting flavor. Basically, I feel Craig's acting was incredible and more than made up for my initial qualms with him playing Bond. And if he can start to portray Bond getting progressively more experianced and suave in upcomming films (which I think he can), I have great hope for the future of Bond.

My only real complaint about the movie was the distinct lack of gadgets. I really hope this Bond namesake re-emerges in the next one.

Yup, "Goldfinger" is still ranked as the best Bond movie on my list, as well, followed closely by "From Russia with Love," "Thunderball" and "Dr. No." :guts:

As am I.  Think they'll re-make any of the old ones now that they've "started the series over?"  I kinda hope not, but I'm not sure how they're going to carry on from here.  More original stories (as in not based off of Ian Fleming's novels)?

All the posts in this thread since the movie came out have been complimenting it. In short everybody likes it and has been saying so.

The next Bond movie takes place after this one, so they're connecting.
