Pen and Paper TTRPG Games

guuuuuuuuts

Excited for the next chapter!
Starting a dedicated thread for TTRPG games, specifically the OSR (Old School Renaissance/Revival/RPG), which are modern games based off the original D&D concept, but with even fewer rules. Sometimes called 0e, which is a joke on 1st edition D&D.

There are a ton of variations, which people here might already know about. These are:

- Small, indie creators
- Sold as print on demand through kickstarter, drivethrurpg.com
- Many are also available as PDF to print-at-home for free or by donation on services like itch.io

Ronin - Free, clearly inspired by anime and about 20 pages total of info. Want to play a free game with only two six sided dice? Start with Ronin.
A very fun way to spend a couple hours by yourself. No cost, enjoy! Keep a journal if you wish to record your adventures, or don't.

D20 examples, for use with D&D dice. Designed to be used with existing D&D if you want:
Cairn - Similar to traditional D&D. Available for free or $3 printed. https://cairnrpg.com/
Mork Borg - Barebones art-free version of core rules at no cost. Solitary Defilement rules for playing without a Game Master. Useful 1-page handout. and 1-page rules reference + character sheets, 1-click character maker, dungeon generator, etc..
Mausritter - Watership Down and Redwall inspired. Can be played with kids! Download and see their nice website. 1-page Rules reference.
And so many more. So many variations.

How to play D20 games by yourself, or without a traditional leader:
Simple method to play these sorts of games without a leader, or GM, is to roll two D20 dice when you get stuck on something.
Both dice succeed, you succeed.
One dice succeeds, you succeed BUT you must explain what changes.
Both dice fail, you fail. Have fun with it.

Hey! I've been working on rebuilding an old variant on 1st Edition AD&D for the past few years now. It's called "Infamous" and was originally created by a guy who used to play in AD&D tournaments a long time ago. He designed Infamous half as a training ground for people to learn the right thought processes for tournament play, and half just adding and changing parts of the game to what he preferred. A few changes from basic AD&D are as follows:

- Several non-weapon proficiencies are introduced, most of which are taken from the Wilderness survival guide
- Magic-Users gain spells in accordance with spell slots, so a Magic-User starts with only 1 1st level spell and doesn't need Read Magic to understand his initial spellbook.
- Clerics and Magic-Users choose which spells they get
- A few tweaks to certain spells (like Sleep having a saving throw)
- 1st level characters being treated as ordinary trained people, not heroes of any sort (yet)
- Characters can research their own subclasses once they reach "Name Level" for their class (and spend a lot of time and gold).

I've been working on it a bit for a little while and I've been really enjoying it. I've been uploading some of it to a blog but I haven't been doing a good job of keeping that up to date.
