Spikey's Colors

Good work spikey, you're improving.

The shading is working, for the most part. It could maybe stand a liiitle more contrast, but its ok.

Theres not much for me to crit as far as technincal aspects are concerned. As far as aesthetics go, you have to keep in mind the context of the scene you're coloring. Guts is remembering people that got him to this point. They're not there, so they probably don't have to follow the same lighting rules that would apply to Guts sitting on the rock. As far as what to do to make it more compositionally interest, is up to you.

Good work.

Very nice, I like it! I'm not really a person to do crits, but personally I think it could look really cool if you made the background characters sort of transparent. Like CnC said he's thinking back and the people aren't really there, so transparency usually can work for memories.. Or atleast thats what I hope :guts:

nice work though! I've been meaning to try coloring that panel, I always did like it.

Good stuff Spikey! My only qualm is with the fur on the horses and Wylad's dead dog, IMO it's a lil too dark. Try possibly lightening things up a bit and showin some detail on the fur itself.

Great work, you're getting very good at metal. The gradation in the background is still not smooth though. Try using one of the gradients to get a smoother gradation, or just make the brush really big and make one single stroke. You'll have to do this either before everything else or first color the section a solid color so you can select and fill later.

DEAD BABBIES!!! The blending in that one is far better. Guts and his armor could use some lighting effects though. Most of the highlights should be orange because of the fire around him. Of course, I think I'd definately struggle with doing that myself, so perhaps I shouldn't criticise.

Thanks for the feedback Vax! Yeah I know it still needs some tweeking done on it but overall i think this is one of my most successful colorings. Now I must go to work... :judo: :zodd:

The skin tone is too splotchy. Unless he has a rash, there's no real need for that kind of shading. Also no real light source here. So it flattens the image.

Same deal here. The image is flattened by incorrect lighting. I refer you to the Tutorial I posted earlier as to how light works in images. Key things are attention to atmosphere and how these shapes are lit (light direction, terminator, bounce light).

Same thing. Only this time the background is unnecessarily distracting. Its brighter and more saturated than the objects its depicting. Keep in mind _what_ your coloring. These panels have reasons for being drawn, in that they're pieces of a story. If you were to make the background more prominant than people in front of it there'd have to be a reason. Why draw to the eye to it then? Things like hue, lightness and saturation are used to highlight subject matter.
Keep at it.

edit: is guts' hair purple?

I'm not too good at criticism, but so far you're doing excellent work Spikey.  The only recommendation that I can think of off the top of my head other than working a bit on shading and light sources, would be if you could make your backgrounds a little less 'loud'.  Perhaps making them more transparent or blending the colors into a white background would help, it'd also keep the main focus of the panels on the actual characters.

But other than that, keep up the great work. :guts:

fair to say I think this is your best yet.

that said, I think there are still some elements that flatten out. The armor for one.

your skin tones are improving, while they are still a tad splotchy at times.
And you seem to favor a blueish tone to dark hair... :???:

I have to agree with CnC that this has to be the best picture I've seen of yours yet.  And the only thing I can think about doing that wasn't mentioned (or kind of was in a way) was adding more of a shine to the armor to give it a more metallic look.

Pretty good, although the green sound effects kinda blend in with the grass. Other than that it's really cool looking, good job! :serpico:

where the hell you been, man!?

anyways I love the upper 3rd of this pic. The fire is well done. However you need to work on the grass and overall shading. Things like the skin is waaay too bright. You seem to have a technique that looks cloudy. This works well for clouds and fire or smoke but it doesn't work well for objects with texture. The leather, grass, skin, armor doesn't work. If you are going to apply the local color of the grass you have to give it some form of texture.

So basically: lighting and texture.

keep it up.

I pretty much agree with CnC, though I'd like to add what's usually his key line: "Choose a light source!"

With this pic, there's obviously going to be the fire, but that won't touch the font side except on the shoulders which you nailed. The rest seems a bit random though. At night you'll still have the moon, so keep that in mind when you're selecting the colors and when you're choosing where to highlight.

"Choose a light source" :miura:

but yea. Theres no indication of light at all here, spikey. Without it all surfaces blend together, flattening the image and making the eye wander around with nothing to look at.

also casca's scabbord is the same color of her armor.

don't rush to crank these things out, spikey. Sit back and think what the scene is about (whats its mood). From that guage how to properly light it. After that _then_ dive into how to technically do it.

keep at it.

Something I've been dabbling with for some time... :guts:

Theres aspects of this one I like. But, again, wheres the light coming from? If its the blast, thats not indicated on Guts (his highlights are on the lower left). Its still too flat, overall.

Keep at it.
