It was playing in Santa Cruz a few months ago, but I didn't go to see it because I already think McDonalds is shit anyway, even amongst the fast food world. When you see it, tell me if he was actually trying to eat as balanced a diet as possible there, or was he just eating Big Mac's and milkshakes everyday to be an asshole and prove an obvious point.

Either way, shortly after it's release, a friend took me to McDonalds and the place was totally revamped into a "healthy" restaurant. Food honestly was better too (not hard), so I guess the guy did some good whatever his methods.

"Take away" food down there, huh? You learn something new everyday day. =)

Yeah I heard about that on the news that either before or after the movie's release forget which McDonalds had the healthy meal thing. And yes as you said it should be obvious eating McDonalds each day will make you fat. The guy who made the movie said that he gained weight, the doctor of his said not to eat McDonalds anymore because his health was getting worse, the guy started to get depress, heck even the girlfriend said he wasn't good in bed anymore.

McDonalds the anti Viagra. ;D

I should make a documentry....
I'd eat McD supersized for a whole month, and get up into a healthy weight range.

Since he did it, McDonalds has probably had the pressure put on them and sales would have been decreasing, but thats probably not such a bad thing if they make it more healthy.

Over here in Australia McDonalds decided to do all that healthy, better for ya stuff a while back before the movie, I really can't notice a difference in taste though so if it's better for me then I would be glad. I have to admit I rather like fast food alot.

I doubt that movie was the main driver behind McD's changes.  I'm sure it helped, but the changes came out too quickly to be totally inspired by the film.  Corporations don't move that fast.

This is not the first time McDs has gotten grief for being unhealthy.  Stock analysts have talked for quite some time about McDs being stagnant and how people view it as just a kid-centered "restaurant".  They've been trying for a while to get more health-conscious adults, especially women, to eat there.  Remember those salads-in-a-cup?

As for the movie itself, I haven't seen it, but the clips make it look like a pretty heavy-handed "documentary" in the Michael Moore style.

Michael Moore is the man he is today because of McDonald's as well. =)

I wouldn't be surprised if he was inspired by michael moore's movies, rather I would expect it to be. Anyway a good watch, saw it today and it's certainly worth the time.

They should classify these types of films as "special interest" films rather than documentaries.  Either way, I enjoyed it.  More than anything, the movie is about how we feed our kids crap and reinforce bad eating habits.

Funny story. My mom's an elementary school teacher and they actually taught her the "Fast Food Song" (it's in the intro) during one of her workshops.  It's pretty aweful.  They even have hand gestures that make it more fun for the kiddos to sing along.

Yeah I was taught that same fast food propaganda song when I was in prep also, did the arm flapping and everything.

Ahhh, nostalgic feelings flow through me.  ;D

Why are they teaching the "fast food song" to everyone, does it hold educational values or something?

I haven't heard it but, do I want to?

The movie lets of a message of the power in media, and how it can have such power to manipulate people from a very young age to consume. This is a important factor with how fast food chains like McDonalds and how they have become so big since they started; some examples of the advertising every part of society, make it convenient to encourage people to consume it further, and how they attract young people in so many ways.
Some examples of how they have happy meals with toys and such, a gimpy clown to win them over, playgrounds to make the experience of going to eat there more enjoyable for them and as I see it becoming a big enough part of society to even learn the fast food song in school when you are really young. This of course is not implying that the teachers are consciously in the fast food propaganda for kids of course, probably just how it has become such a big part of our society that we are even taught such songs.

I remember the song well, it goes a little something like this....

A Pizza hut, a pizza hut, Kentucky fried chicken and a Pizza hut.
A Pizza hut, a pizza hut, Kentucky fried chicken and a Pizza hut.
McDonalds, McDonalds, Kentucky fried chicken and a Pizza hut.

A capitalist classic. ;D

Thanks for the answer Sparn, but basically the movie set out to prove what we knew all along?

and, how dare you call make reference to Ronald McDonald and forget his pals Grimace and The Hamburgler! >:(

In a way yes, you could say that. I think it has some similar traits to Bowling for columbine, as a darker but truthful perspective of society we often miss. Anyway if you enjoyed any of Michael Moores documentaries I highly recommend Supersize me.

Yeah, Grimace is a good example of what years of McDonalds can do to you I suppose, having said that I still love eating my takeaway shit.

I lost about 30 lbs eating 4 quarter pound cheeseburgers virtually every day (w/ assorted sides of fruits and vegetables) for like 5 months, doing no exercise to speak of. McDonalds is a little more unhealthy than normal, but the plain fact of the matter is that whether your food was made in a 4 star restaurant or a fast food joint, you're still putting about the same chemicals into your body. The key is being in control. Movies like Supersize Me are stupid, not only because the premise of the movie is giving up your own free will in choosing what to eat, but because it tries to shift the blame away from the person responsible for their own eating and exercising habits.

Walking at a normal pace for 1 hr for a 150lb person burns 440 calories, proportionately more if you weigh more. On a 2000 calorie diet you can eat 10 quarter pounders patties a day, 20 grilled chicken breasts, etc. If you burn just 100 calories more than you consume in a day, you will lose 10lbs in a year. Unless you're part of the 1% of the population with metabolic disorders there is really no excuse for being overweight.
