The SOPA Hearings

Yeah, I don't get the point in any case. Even if they had some loose connection to these programs, which sounds tenuous at best, and mostly made up, that doesn't mean they were giving consent to use said programs illegally against them, as if they're complicit or have been compensated, "Oh, I visited a website, I've now paid to have all the world's media for FREE!" It's like saying the door-to-door knife salesmen that sold you kitchen knives is a hypocrite for being upset when you used them to stab him. Nice defense, the broken logic being employed and blind sense of entitlement is bad to point of incrimination. Believe it or not, those programs can be used to share legal content (such as your personal favorite MS paint masterpieces or text files =); the fact that people only consider them for stealing just goes to show there's a problem.

Members of Congress backpedal on SOPA.

For those scoring at home, so far the anti-SOPA movement is inconveniencing the Internet more than SOPA. :ganishka:

As of today, wikipedia is blacked out and they are trying to connect people with their legislators so you can either call or e-mail them. So do that and let them know how you feel on the subject:

In the shadow of the SOPA and PIPA debate and Internet posturing Megaupload was shut down by the FBI today.

True. I don't recall, any site besides Megaupload; to have had the number of
digital proliferation it did. Its not the 1st, and it won't be the last; to fall under the
blade of Corporate/Federal Enforcement of the Internet.

Indeed, and given the ridiculous amount of money they made before it happened I don't feel too bad for them. Not to mention the founder had his last name changed to "Dotcom" a few years ago. He deserves jail time for that alone.

True :ganishka:

Anyway, there's a new megaupload site with a different url. It's all cyclical. One goes down, others go up.

I find the reaction from similar sites and their supporters fascinating...

As many of you may already be aware, even without the passing of internet censorship bills SOPA and PIPA, the corrupt US Govt. has managed to shutdown Megaupload. It is our hope and our belief that this will not be permanent. As the 13th most visited website in the world, Megaupload has vast financial resources and top tier lawyers at their disposal. We expect their website to be back up soon.

I appreciate the reference to SOPA and complete lack of acknowledgment of what megaupload has become. A more measured response:

The legal action against Mega will set a precedent for similar cloud-hosting services. The MegaUpload site itself had no search function to discover content directly, but according to the indictment this was done to “conceal the scope of its infringement.”

Well, duh.

I hope you're aware, that the reason Megaupload was shut down; was to generate Congressional support for SOPA and PIPA.

Then there is this, "Anonymous" goes on a Hacker rampage because of the Megaupload shut down.

Of course, it makes little difference in the end. And meanwhile, "The Pirate Bay" is still up and running.

BREAKING NEWS: kids DDoS websites! :isidro:

I really wish the word "hacker" wasn't so misused these days.

Really? I beg to differ. Just because a site is hosting stuff that may be questionable, it doesn't give the U.S. the right to take into custody the people who were running it, whom for the most part, aren't even American citizens nor have probably step foot in the US before, does it?

Whether you like it or not, American law is turning int he World law also Aazealh doesn't care about internet people /kanyewest :troll:

It was a collaborative takedown between multiple countries. :slan:

And please, don't play dumb, we all know the content hosted on megaupload and its subsidiaries was for the most part (talking 99% here) illegal. A lot of people made money off of it, and now the top dogs are being targeted by the law. Am I going to cry a river over it, when there's ten other sites vying to take its place as we speak? Nope.

American law means nothing to me. Also, while no one's talked about it yet in this thread, SOPA and PIPA have been shelved indefinitely.
