What Are You Playing?

I am loving Delta Rune chapter 5. Never thought I’d enjoy those types of games after Undertale which I felt was so overrated and mediocre.
Yep. It’s far more enjoyable than Undertale in my opinion, even in its unfinished state.

I think a big part of it is the cast is more of an ensemble than Undertale. It’s also silly and juvenile in a way that’s somehow charming, not repellent. Jokes hit more often than they miss (and let’s be clear, they do miss…).

But what keeps me glued between chapters is the mystery of what’s really happening. Not everything is made super plain, which I respect. Whereas in Undertale, I really just didn’t give a shit.

I've been singing Deltarune’s praises here since Chapters 3 and 4 dropped last year. My estimation of it has only grown, to the point that I currently consider it my favorite videogame. But I might have to replay Undertale before doing a serious write-up.

In the meantime, I’ve replayed Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal. They’re both modern classics, but Eternal is, in my opinion, straight up the best action shooter ever made.

The first time I played 2016 was on Switch years ago, and I wasn’t sure how it would hold up—especially after playing Eternal with all its new treats. It holds up spectacularly, and its simplicity next to Eternal is refreshing. That said, I found myself wishing I had selected Nightmare over Ultra Violence, which became a cakewalk in the latter stages with a full arsenal.

I also realized it’s not advisable to skip it. Doomyternal is a punishing gauntlet if you don’t go in with the experience of the previous game. For that one, I did choose Nightmare, and I thought it was a pretty balanced challenge. I struggled way more with it the first time I played it on a lower difficulty, after years of not touching 2016.

As you can tell, the id Software news hit extra hard this week!

P.S. Walter, I’m aware you hate Berdly. I’m assuming you’re familiar with the game’s alternate “weird” route by now? Look it up for some gratification!

And to anyone interested in learning more about the game that doesn't want to waddle in the pond of mediocre video essays (with some exceptions), I recommend these Aaz style writings:

I had no idea you were playing Deltarune. It's my favorite thing ever right now. And the folks saying it's better than Undertale are absolutely right. I feel like UT was Toby's test game and this is the real deal.

Walter, I'm with you. The mystery of it all is so enticing. I haven't been into any sort of ARG stuff until Deltarune came around. I've watched a billion videos of a bunch of kids flailing, trying to theorize, and it's such a fun experience. Ontop of that, each chapter is just really fun to play (and replay).

Flowers blooms in your heart.
