Well, then... with all the parrallels with Devilman and Miura wishing for a happy ending, whatever Kouji Mori is trying to do, i think the last chapter made by Miura and published post mortem was almost "it", it had a lot concentrated of show don't tell and intense poetry in the last Chapter where Griffith sheds a tear, it felt like a bittersweet ending very similar to how Ladyhawke transforms into the griffith when dawn comes and how Roy Batty ends in Blade Runner "All those moments will be lost in time..." "like tears in rain." really fits into how Griffith just feels those feeling for a fleeting moment.
A lot of answers were given at this very moment, the dumbfounded schock face of Guts on these last panels, Griffith talking about his dreams and feeling like a child embraced by nostalgic warmth, and then when he wakes up he only feels a faint sense of loneliness... "That too, fades away, like a single tear, like morning dew" (very reminiscent of the lines about memories / moments that will be lost in time, like tears in rain.) Juxtaposed to a "Ladyhawke" like transformation from the MoonChild that is innocent loved by both Guts and Casca to then their lifelong worse ennemy.
There, it was all there to be some type of ending in itself, and now, i will allways wonder if chapter 365 was really ever ment to be written or scenarized the way it was... Maybe "some" panels felt pre drawn by Miura here and there at the beginning of 365 but it quickly felt very "invented" and pretty fast in between panels then at page 2 / 3 , full on invention drawings.
All that to say that i really don't like that the continuation feel like they need to take Guts in a direction that i feel stupid and insulting, as if Guts needed to "meditate" and reflect hard in a Stupa just to come to the realization that he has to wisen up and let go of some of his revenge or some thing like that and let go, it's personal of course but i think Guts could have finally come to the realization that he could be happier with Casca even living or staying on Elfheim later on after one or two more adventures and stay there to live with the MoonChild boy, as Elfheim is portrayed to be completely separated from the rest of the world when the veil between worlds disappear / rebuilds itself. As some sort of "Reverse" Devilman Ending where the world just doesn't need to be destroyed and finally come to an understanding that this is a neverending cycle of this world as it is driven by the collective human subconscious. That they loose grip on their revenge and just choose to live outside of the influence of the IOE on that island as a familly or something.
Not only Chapter 364 answered a lot of things, but was perfect as it also led you to imagine, like a perfect open ended "ending" given the circumstances and left a lot to the imagination yes, even if Gut's options felt more and more limited and he would have to rely more and more on his party to help him.
I do feel insulted that they need to drag Guts through a neverending arc of depression where they treat him as if he didn't grow as a character, as if he didn't become a more seasoned and even, a wiser adult through his numerous experiences as a human there, even rushing Griffith after 364 as if he had nothing to loose, as if he wasn't capable and able to realize by himself he needs his comrades and able to ask or go back to ask for more advices from magic users and whatnot about how to reach Griffith in his ethereal / untouchable form. There was dozens of more clever and more witty ways to continue this and not infantilize Guts this way as if he was not able to snap out of it, especially with all the solutions he got from more magic and ethereal users in his party, the seal helping him around his and casca's brand. That world was full of so many possible solutions to the problem he faced , and he saw firsthand that raw brute force / power was not allways the way things are done especially in these last chapters, just like he was able to learn from rickert's ingeniosity and judeau's swift, nimble movements and throwing knife, i really doubt Guts couldn't have asked for some tools and / or magic types of markings, runes, or consumables to help him in his fight from the elfheim people.
All of this will never be answered, Dur An Ki also showed us how characters can be very clever at finding ways to circumvent impossible odds for the age of the characters, so, i feel the direction they took the story is very cheap, very inexperienced, doesn't take advantage of the world, the lore, the many characters and their abilities to help or really, just be artistic and invent new things to add to the story, the toolset of Guts, could have been anything, even a seal or an incantation, enchantment for the armor, or for his sword... special coating made of fairy dust, troll hairs and toad saliva, or just throwing fairy dust mixed with sand to the face of Griffith to make him more material then ethereal, just find the seat of the 4 element gods and get answers from them, get new artifacts from them, or ask Skull Knight if he can plundge his own sword in his mouth to temporarily forge and imbue it with his collected behelits, anything really other then dragging Guts chapters after chapters as if he became some sort of empty casca himself that cannot think nor talk.
(and i'm sorry i got carried away)
