I know it's cliche, but I think this is a fun topic and usually sparks some interesting debate. I also know it's next to impossible to only list just one movie, since there's dozens of genres and we all tend to feel differently about different movies depending on our mood and whatnot, so I just want everyone to list what comes off the top of their head.
I'll start:
STAR WARS
Who can deny that they don't love the original trilogy? No one above the age of 20 I'd imagine. My favorite is The Empire Strikes Back, personally, but really, the trilogy should be seen as one movie in my opinion. Great, great filmmaking. I hardly ever just watch one of them at a time... just doesn't seem right!
Donnie Darko's always held a special place in my heart. From the same creator, I actually enjoyed Southland Tales quite a bit as well. I haven't seen this writer/director's latest work, The Box, but I intend to at some time soon.
Also, I have to throw some respect toward Sin City. Being a huge comic book nerd, this movie just hit the mark for me. To this day I wonder why more filmmakers don't follow in it's steps. I mean, a comic book is basically a storyboard for a movie! I've even heard comic book artists comment that they often play out their stories in their heads as if they were movies, then draw them using those "camera angles". It blows my mind that more filmmakers don't seem to understand that. Anyway....
As for comedy, I can't help but say Grandma's Boy. A few years back when I lived with two other nerdy guys who, just like me, loved to party and play video games this movie was basically the default background noise. I still laugh out loud to most of it to this day... 3000 views later.
I figure I should probably mention some anime, even though I'm not really a subscriber anymore. I absolutely love the 8-Man After movie, as old as it is. I also enjoy Macross: Do You Remember Love?, Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door, Vampire Hunter D (the original), and Nausicaa: Of the Valley of the Wind.
