SKNET Radio - Post random songs

I thought about making a separate thread, but figured I'd just toss this in here.

Today at work, I ran into my favorite album, in its entirety on soundcloud (the band linked it on facebook).

http://soundcloud.com/branvan3000/bran-van-3000-discosis-entire-album

Now, I rarely listen to individual songs, I almost always listen to albums in their entirety. I also hated this album the first few times I heard it (it comes off as SOOO poppy). Once I figured out a little better what was going on, I loved it, at one point, listening to it 1-2x a day. It wasn't ever released in the US (it was on the Beastie Boy's label Grand Royal, which dissolved after its European and Canadian releases). I mean, from its Summer Lovin'-esque 'Love Cliche' to a song that deconstructs common views on love using a rap of Springstien titles. Its glorious. =) haha, there's my sales pitch. cheers!

Passion Pit - Carried Away

Their new album was okay. There were two really great songs, and this is one of them. A real happy track, which is cool. Sounds very early 90s.

I fell in love with their first album when it came out. Unfortunately their new one wasn't as solid.

Found out a few days ago that one of my favorite bands, Underoath, is disbanding. They were a huge musical influence for my friends and I ever since the 9th grade. They are doing one final farewell tour in January next year, with only 9 dates. The closest to me is in New York, which unfortunately already sold out. I ended up spending $120 for two tickets just so me and my buddy can go see them one last time. They are playing with mewithoutyou, As Cities Burn and Letlive. Great lineup!

Anyway here's a song by them with a cool music video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63EetspU6Is

p.s. So many bands have disbanded this year. Alexisonfire, Thrice, Thursday and now Underoath. This is how you know your getting old and your childhood is ending

Good music choices Oburi. I'll be catching Underoath's show at the metro (great lineup indeed!), and I saw Thursday and Thrice's last ones too :judo:

Definitely listen if you're into alternative rock/punk mix like Foo Fighters.

Just started listening to these guys about a week ago and I'm pretty blown away. Doomy-sludge from New Orleans. This album rips, they haven't been around very long and have released a ridiculous amount of music, most of which is put up for free by the band on their website.

Good track, Viral Harvest. Do you have a sub-genre preference when it comes to Doom like Sludge/ Traditional/ Funeral/ Atmospheric/ etc.? Any favorite Doom acts? Speaking of Doom, check Shape Of Despair out

Bought the Looper soundtrack. I think the music in the movie stuck with me longer than the actual movie.

Here's a good track from a memorable scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzTv5hMfMPs

Makes me sad this movie wasn't all that it could be. :judo:

I'm not incredibly familiar with a lot of Doom or Sludge, but there were some bands on Hydrahead that I really like. They were really short-lived, but check out a band called "Mare". They only released one album, an EP, but it was pretty interesting.

I like some atmospheric and long-winded stuff that would more likely fall into the post-metal category though - stuff like Buried Inside, Cult of Luna, Light Bearer, Mouth of the Architect, and Rosetta, among others. I'm certainly open to suggestions though! I'm always getting into new music. I'll check out that track you posted!

Neurosis are fantastic though I have yet to see them. I've been stuck on Through Silver in Blood for years, I really need to give their other albums a shot. I heard a track from what I guess is a new album they're coming out with and I wasn't really feeling it. They're definitely the giants of post-metal though, you can really get lost in that stuff on long drives and whatnot.

Did you guys listen to the NEWrosis? It's pretty underwhelming. What do you think of it?

Hydrahead ... nice label, a bit hipsterish but overall good variety. I mean with Jesu, Isis and Gridlink it's pretty cool. I own Mare's EP actually :p and I wish they didn't break up, a follow-up to that would've sounded a lot better.

The only MOTA album I heard is The Ties That Blind, how do the others compare to it? Haven't heard Rosetta, Light Bearer - will check em out, thanks! Cult Of Luna, oh man, been so long since anyone mentioned em or I heard em, need to pull out my The Beyond or Salvation CDs tomorrow.

What do you think of Katatonia, Les Discrets, Alcest, Agalloch, Anathema? With Kat and Ana, it's always interesting to hear what people think of their different era's.

Hydrahead is mildlllllly hipster-esque, but I love a lot of those bands that came out of hardcore. I grew up listening to stuff like Converge, Cave In, and Botch. Isis got a little bit weird towards the end but Oceanic is untouchable (to me) They also put out the best damn Black Sabbath tribute compilation.

They're not Hydrahead, but are you a fan of Today is the Day at all? I've been listening to them the most lately and I slept on them for way too long seeing as they've influenced a good deal of the stuff I've been listening to for years. I've been stuck on Temple of the Morning Star lately and can't find a single bad song on there. Really noisy, high gain, and abrasive. And Steve Austin is a lunatic.

As far as MotA goes, check out "Quietly". Really groovy and moody stuff (which can be said of most post-metal, I guess haha)

Rosetta haven't put out a bad album yet but I highly suggest checking out "The Galilean Satellites" and "Wake/Lift"

Light Bearer have me the most interested right now because the entire band is built around an atheist perspective to the book of Genesis, Paradise Lost, and the His Dark Materials trilogy (fittingly) They have some really nice artwork accompanying all of these releases too. The singer was in a previous post-metal/crust/ambient band called Fall of Efrafa which released music based on Watership Down. I was lucky enough to see them in a squat in NYC back in 2009, I think it was the only tour they did outside of Europe.

A girl I'm dating got me into Alcest and I really dig that whole shoegazey black metal approach. She also got me into the band that predated them - Amoeseurs, and I thought they were pretty enjoyable too. Agalloch's been a hard listen for me but I can appreciate them for what they are, I guess I just don't feel it the way other people do even though I guess The Mantle is pretty good. I'm not the biggest scholar of black metal at all, I grew up listening to hardcore and punk of the 90s haha, but have been open to more stuff in the past 6 or 7 years.

I quickly listened to "Honor Found In Decay" and it's clearly a different vibe than their first albums... So, I really don't know what to think of it, I'll give it another try to get a better idea of the whole thing.
"Through Silver In Blood" and "Enemy of the Sun" are my preferred so far.

These last years, I've been into Hardcore bands, such as Converge, Trap Them, The Hope Conspiracy, Pulling Teeth, etc...
I've got the last Converge "All We Love We Leave Behind" and this one is a gem, did anyone listened to it?
Converge - Glacial Pace:

Alcest and Les Discrets are two excellent bands, Anathema is also really good. I've discovered Lantlôs this Summer.

Talking about Shoegaze/Black Metal, I dig Deafheaven. They have made a cover of Mogwai songs, "Punk Rock" and "Cody":

I really have to give the new Converge a listen, this song is pretty good though. I thought "Axe to Fall" was pretty good as well, but "Petitioning the Empty Sky" and "Caring and Killing" will probably always be my favorites. I thought Jane Doe was a bit hyped-up when it came out, just couldn't get into it at the time and only came to appreciate it years later as a solid release.

If you like Converge, I highly suggest giving Rorschach a listen. They had a huge influence on early Converge.

What Deafheaven albums would you recommend? I'm really intrigued by this whole mish-mash of BM and shoegaze.

Their new album is worth it, if you liked "Axe to Fall" then I'm sure that you won't be disappointed. "Petitioning the Empty Sky" and "Caring and Killing" are very different than their latest records but I also appreciate them. "Jane Doe" marked the change of style for Converge, very aggressive, very dark, there is something special about this album, but just like every Converge albums, I think that you have to be in the right state of mind to fully appreciate it.

I've heard of them, I'll make sure to give them a listen.

It's a relatively new band, so, their discography is very short but you can listen to their demo and "Roads to Judah". They are in the process of making a second album.

On a side note, I really like Deathwish, there is a lot of great bands on this label.

I own the first 2 Lantlos albums, good stuff ... but they've kinda gone downhill with each release especially with the last one. Will check Deafheaven out, thanks!

Those 2 Deathwish albums are incredible, under-rated.

In the general sense, I listen to a lot of Deathmetal (oldschool, brutal, tech ... can't stand melodic DM), some Blackmetal or so called new wave of Black/Death bands, select War Metal like Deiphago, Blasphemy, Diocletion, and lots of Doom. Sure you guys have big lists of likes or favorites, think we should branch out into a Metal thread and discuss till the end of time? ^_~

It's true that the first self-titled album and .neon are more consistent. I mostly listened to Agape and I really like it, even if it's sound very experimental.

I was talking about Deathwish inc., the label. :guts:

I agree with you for a Metal thread! ;)

Haha sorry my bad, I thought about the band : p ... I checked the label's artists, have not heard of like 90% of what's on there. That's either a good or bad thing *sigh* let's take this convo forward in a new thread I'll pop after this post. I guess it's fair so we don't derail this thread for everyone, I think.

I'm in love with this track

I have a love/hate relationship with Deathwish Inc. They DO have a pretty good roster and have signed some pretty good hardcore bands, but when they step out of their element and try to include crust and metal in their lineup, they come up kind of short. The first 108 reunion record that came out on there in 2007 was pretty damn awesome though, as were all of the Hope Conspiracy records. I feel like a lot of bands that they sign have a mandatory Kurt Ballou recording, and while the dude is certainly not an amateur, he tends to record and mix things similarly and they end up kind of sounding the same. I still like most God City recordings though, I'm a bit lukewarm on the subject haha.
