Repeat viewings

Have you watched a movie two or more times in the theater?

  • Yes - I wanted to see it in a different format (2D vs 3D vs IMAX vs IMAX 3D)

So I'm one of those guys who'll go to the theater and watch the movie again, for different reasons depending on the movie or the experience.

What about you?

If you have, what movie(s) did you go for?

From recent memory I've watched -

The Dark Knight (midnight screening was in IMAX and the 3something AM show right after was in regular format only cos I didn't get tickets for the next IMAX show heh)
2001: A Space Odyssey (limited weekend screening a few months ago at IFC, I went back to back on both nights)

I think there's more but I can't recall at the moment, I know I've gone again for something heh. I'll be hitting up Prometheus again at Lincoln Center, this time for a seat in the middle, center/ back row.

I picked Option 1.

Sure, who hasn't? The last movie I saw twice was Avengers, both because I wanted to support it at the box office and because my wife wanted to tag along after I told her it was worth it.

I think I've seen pretty much every Pixar movie in theaters at least twice. Except Up and Finding Nemo, neither of which I was a big fan of.

Me. I've never done that. Why watch a movie twice? I mean even rewatching a movie at home is something I seldom do, much like I never re-read books. Once is enough for me.

Yeah, but your memory is superhuman. :void: I can think of a dozen reasons to return to a movie a second or third time. The first thing that comes to mind is that during the first viewing of a movie, much of your perception of it is tainted by the looming suspense of the plot. But once you know how all the pieces fit together, a second viewing can bring out other aspects of the movie that may have been missed on the first run, or went unappreciated.

Now, I say that with the caveat that not all movies are dense enough to warrant repeat viewings. Some, you can catch all that matters in one sitting. Others deserve a closer observation.

The other aspect is just to re-experience a good movie. Are you saying that if Commando or Predator made a return to theaters, that you'd opt-out? :daiba:

Count me in, DEFINITE re-watch!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention re-watching Tree Of Life and Melancholia last year. I did see Inception twice only cos I watched it on the regular screen the first time and then on the IMAX the second time.

I almost never do that anymore.

In terms of movies in theaters, the last one was when the Dark Knight was being screened for free in my hometown in an outdoor area about a year after its theatrical release. Other than that, my enjoyment of a film of any quality really goes down with each viewing; I usually just like to go back to really well done clips or scenes instead.

All the LotR movies, AvP (sorry, I liked it), Transformers, Inglorious Basterds, Star Trek, Avengers, Departed, Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, Hellboy 2, Batman Begins, Dark Knight.

And that's just to name a few.

Don't hate me, but I saw The Matrix Reloaded a record 7 times when it came out (I'm the only person, besides my girlfriend, that I know who enjoyed them, and still does).

The most recent movies I saw more than once in the theater were The Dark Knight, Casino Royale, and Pan's Labyrinth.

Like Walter, if I enjoy a movie enough, I'll purchase it and be comfortable watching it over and over again (Blade Runner, Alien, No Country for Old Men, etc.). Most movies I see don't warrant a second viewing, and even fewer warrant a purchase.

I almost never do this. I feel like it's too expensive to waste my money on. Once is enough. If I want to watch it again that bad i can wait for the bluray or dvd. The only time I remember doing this was with Toy Story 3, but that was because I went with different people who wanted to see it.

Although as Walter pointed out, sometimes I might go to a local theater to see an older movie that I just love so much. Stuff like Yellow Submarine and Evil Dead, just for the theater experience.

Beyond going to the theater though, there are some movies that I just watch over and over again, mostly when I just want to put something on to fall asleep to (I fall asleep with the tv on) or when friends come over and we just to put something on. Stuff like Predator, Die Hard, Lord Of the Rings.

All three LotR movies, The Fountain, The Avengers, The Dark Knight, all enjoyed a repeat viewing in theaters. And then there was 300 which I saw 3 times...

Avatar (1st Standard 2nd,3rd IMAX 3D)
Bad Santa (3 times)
Underworld (3 times)
Shutter Island (2 times)
Shrek 2 (3 times)
Pirates of the Caribbean (3 times)
Matrix Reloaded (2 times)
Dark Knight (2 times)
300 (3 times)
Inception (3 times)

Thats about it though for me off the top of my head. I would say some simply leave a great impression. However, each viewing I take someone new with me.

I never do this, but i did watch the first two LotR movies three times [(free tickets) didn't do the same for the third one because i didn't like it].
