I think Berserk might have turned out great, but comics like Mugen no Jyuunin I am suspicious of. Some American translation just assumes the general audience wouldn't understand japanese culture and just cuts everything down...

I really don't understand. Are you speaking about fidelity to the literal text or about fidelty to the original spirit and meaning? Because the two things are very different and a too much faithful translation of literal text can betray the latter two, particularly when the two cultures are so unlike
