Griffith - King Or Not?

OK, in the first episode of the anime, is Griffith described as the king of Midland? It appears that way, but after learning more about the later episodes of the mangas, it seems like Griffith is just still chasing that dream of becoming king one day (even though he sacraficed the band in order to become king). What I want to know is: was Griffith the king in that first episode, or was he just lording over that particular town?

It was a mistake in the anime like CnC said, Griffith was still Femto and didn't exist in the material world at the time. Please search for answers in old threads before posting a new one next time, thanks.
