Berserk Character studies

Dear all,

I'm a new member here. I'd like to show some of my new pencil studies of Berserk characters.
I intend to paint a few of them in oil colour as a part of my New Year goal. Need to get the hang of these characters first before I pick up my paint brushes.

Any comments welcome. If you feel that any of them look not quite right, please let me know. I will try to correct them before the final version.

Hi Vee, welcome to Sk.net! Some very nice stuff you've got here. I'm a fan of the Luca and the second Mozgus ones, personally.
Not too much to crit. On the "elves" pic, the shape of Jill's left eye is off. But on all the shading is near perfect. I eagerly await what you can do with oils.

I love the Jill, Sonia and Luca drawings.

Welcome to the board and thank you for the quality introduction.
We hope to see more soon.

Something is a little off with Guts. perhaps just the missing white streak?

Zodd's blade looks like it is at a slightly incorrect angle compared to his hand.

These are bloody awesome pencil studies. I applaud you, sir.

Once again, some very nice reproductions here. I'm really diggin' it :guts:

The eyes are backwards. It's supposed to be his right eye that's closed, and his left is open. Plus, imo, the eye is a bit off (even if it were the open one).

I really like the Farnese/Serpico pic. The 3 girls and Luca's group pics are also very nice. Luca's eyes are a bit off, tho.
Zodd's nice, too. His hips don't seem to be following the same perspective as the rest of the figure (might just be me, tho). Also his front thigh and foot's contours are off. Facial and hand structure could use some work and overall it's not the strongest of poses (that's just my opinion).

Overall, tho, simply great work. I look forward to more :D

That's quite nice, aside from the little defaults that were pointed out already. I especially like the Farnese & Serpico drawing, it's fantastic.

Thank you very much for the feedback.

I totally agree with CnC that Zodd's pic doesn't quite work. That was my exercise on the anatomy. I tried doing some rough sketches but it wouldn't give a strong composition. Quite boring, to be honest. Not quite sure how to work on the perspective of the sword. Any advises?

Just remember about Guts eyes that it's on the wrong side! Thank you!

Will try to correct all these mistakes and post them again.

More pics..

Fantastic stuff. Are these done with conte, or compressed charcoal and chalk, or black and white colored pencil? I love the paper you're using for them, though of these last three pics only Jill loads for me - however, if I go directly to http://s252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/vee209/Berserk%20Studies/ , they all load perfectly. Strange.

it seems that the web page just correct my files automatically. Maybe I should rename my files again..

As suggested by Bekul, best to go to
http://s252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/vee209/Berserk%20Studies/

They are done with sepia/ black/ white colour pencils.

Wow these are beautiful, I'm jealous. Are you using reference material while you do so?
I really like the look of depth in mozgus. I can't wait to see how you are with finishing these up.

Yes, that's it, as CnC suggested. Incorrect spellings of the characters' names are autocorrected by the forum. You should only use these spellings to avoid problems: Farnese, Isidro, Schierke, Guts, Casca, Griffith, Zodd, Mozgus. If you're unsure of a spelling and that your link doesn't work, look at how the file name appears on the forum, and change the actual file name accordingly to solve any problem.

I'm really liking these. I hope you keep posting more :)

Of the 3 you were intending to show:
Isidro is a nice sketch. His ear is a bit off, tho.

The one you named Jill I assume is the one with Jill and Rochine? It looks good! Jill turned out real nice (minor nitpick on the size of the right hand). Rochine's nose it looks like you had trouble nailing down (but the the smallest countour you landed with is the correct shape).

The Schierke and Sonia pic also turned out real nice. I like the composition. There are some nitpicks with the anatomy (size and shape of the feet and hands, foreshortening of Shierkes leg). Sonia's thighs seem short. Schierke, overall, turned out real nice.

Again, really liking these. Keep going :guts:

Some are reproductions of existing panels, but I'd guess for all she's referencing the manga :)

It's so nice to get a proper critics for my works. They all have been very constructive too. Thank you! Just fixed other bad links.

More pics for today..

This one.. still don't quite like the composition.

Two below.. I want to paint them like religious paintings - like those of Rubens or Rembrandt (one has got to be ambitious! :puck:) . They are quite rough still. Will come up with more refined drawings later.

Yes, I still based my drawings on the manga. It takes a bit of time to get used to this drawing style. It's a long way to the promised land..

The second one made me laugh 'cause I'm familiar with the painting and it's funny to see Mozgus in there :D

I did some quick edits to work as suggestions:

As you say, the first drawing is a bit weak, compositionally. While this is something I struggle with constantly, and I am by no means the proper authority, I made a quick edit that could be a possible fix:

Basically my thought was to strengthen the triangle that the goat psuedo-apostle creates and insert Casca into that. Should you feel the surrounding figures to be important I would balance them around this central triangle. And if you were to reject all of that idea and insist on a horizontal layout I would suggest keeping the forms balancing themselves (I think this might be the root of the problem in the current layout)

The 3rd pic is a cool nod to the original but something about the negative space above and below the figures bothers me. A simple crop could fix the problem but should you want to keep the aspect ratio perhaps simply bringing focus via value would work:

I hope that illustrates what I'm talking about. Again, these are just suggestions. Hope they help.

Two more pics for today..

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/vee209/Berserk%20Studies/farnese2.jpg

I'm not sure which is more difficult.. getting the eyes right or the nose. When I get one of these wrong, everythnig falls apart. I'm getting used to the style, but not quite there yet.

Getting the eyes right in particular is tricky. I think the problem for both is the structure is off.
For Casca, at the angle you have her skull at, her far eye would be moved back and would be higher.

I did a quick edit of the Farnese pick. Basically for the orientation of her head the left eye would be moved up and aligned so it follows the brow and eye line of the other eye.
