Modern warfare: Russia back on invasion campaign, takes Georgia

Georgia's president said Friday that his country is under attack by Russian tanks and warplanes, and he accused Russia of targeting civilians as tensions over the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia appeared to boil over into full-blown conflict.

This is one of those things that if someone tells me: "Oh this is no big deal," I will reply to them squarely: "You are full of shit."

The wargames were apparently initiated after Russia said a Georgian attack on a military barracks left a number of their peacekeepers dead.

The US, aka World Police, is calling for an immediate cease-fire :ganishka:

As always, the Washington Post's coverage blows away the AP's/CNN's.

Russia, which has peacekeeping troops in the area, said it was coming to the defense of its citizens, who it says were threatened by Georgian aircraft, tanks and artillery. Georgia's president, meanwhile, said the two countries were at war, and he called on the United States to back up its support of a nation that is vying to become a member of NATO.
Wow, wouldn't that be a dangerous alliance. Reminds me of how WW1 began, sans Franz.

Hell yeah this is a big deal, the Russian president wants bloody retribution. From the sounds of it, it is already a diplomatic mess.

I don't think the US would directly get involved aside from supplying Georgia with weapons and deploying military advisers.

Seriously? And I felt ignorant for thinking "Georgia?" when Walter first posted this (pissed myself a little when I read his choice of subject headline). But damn that's sad. The other sad thing is that John Edwards' affair is the biggest thing in the news right now.

Yeah, it's especially pathetic since it's a freaking year old story they actively chose not to cover until now, to the point of basically covering it up. It's been all over Drudge and the Internet for months.

The emergence of a second front is another sign that Russia intends to continue its punishing campaign against Georgia... Georgia is now under sea blockade by Russia, which moved its Black Sea fleet along the coast to prevent supplies and goods from entering the country.

Doesn't sound good at all.

The times also did a comparison of the military of both countries.

Hard to believe that we're actually living in the 21st century, huh? Still, here we are, fighting over religion, mindless nationalism and natural resources over and over again.

That just makes me sick..so i'll just turn back to reading ye olde peaceful Berserk.

Not really, this isn't some enlightened age where everyone is getting along. This is just the Russia reaction to NATO trying to absorb all the former USSR nations and the missile shield Bush is trying to put in Europe.

True. Still, i actually had higher hopes for the new century, but it just boils down to stupid power-play again and again.

Yeah, you really can't sympathize too much for Russia's economic problems when you see them spending $40 billion on their military... so they can conquer Georgia?

At the risk of the appearance, though it's not considered such - is Georga, this invasion thing, "Russia's Iraq"?

At this point, I think that's the equivalent of comparing apples invading oranges to tomatoes invading broccoli.

Too early to tell. If you want a comparison to a failed long term war [vietnam], look up the Russian Afghan war.

Edit: I find this very relevant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-3FOHxPHhs
