Newsweek has a picture collage of the guys who got us into this mess in the first place - along with a breakdown of how much they were paid in severance (in the 100s of millions). Take a hard look at the richest assholes in the country.

They need to set up a committee to investigate who's responsible for them not looking into this sooner. :carcus:

I'm not surprised it seems the US is becoming more and more corrupt and is running itself into the ground. I live here and I'm really starting to doubt staying. Sad times.

"The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I have just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away. The regional governors now have direct control over their territories. Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station. "

Yeah, he does have that ultimate haughty look, like a king looking at rabble in the streets.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not... I would be. Beyond it being a suicide attempt, it's only greater news value than your average mayhem is the possible face and exclamation point it could provide to the economic crisis, but even that's a sensationalistic stretch. Emmett Till this ain't.

More seriously, while it's a nice gesture of Fannie Mae to give her back her house, it's disturbing that such behavior be rewarded and therefore possibly encouraged. It would have been far more sensible to provide her with the shelter she really needs... in a home for mental health recovery.

Oh I'm being perfectly serious.

It's significant because this is the dark half that's been in everyone's head after the Wall Street fallout, and now it's happened. The financial fiasco now has a physical context: One woman's shattered life. Don't think about it on a national level story - clearly this event isn't going to affect the world. But on a local level, this kind of story is pure gold. It localizes a national trend and it has every element needed for a successful story: timeliness, check; goriness, check; sensationalism, check; realizing America's worst fears, check. It's a gold mine!

Yeah, I see the value from an journalists standpoint, and I know when you say real, you mean exactly that it's something happening down the street, but still... I think the "realness" factor is a fault of our own perception, not that this story is any less artificial than the election or the greater factors that give this story greater credibility and vice versa in the first place. Also, even if it gets people to think about it, it won't necessarily get them to think any smarter.

I read an interesting article the other day about why constituents were so against the bailout because they see it as helping the rich bad guys, and don't perceive the greater the economic threat to themselves because there's nothing visceral, like this suicide story, to directly react to. Basically, the bear in the woods has to be standing in front of you roaring before people will heed the warning. It likened it to people not evacuating for hurricanes because they don't believe/perceive the threat until they can see it, by which time it's too late of course.

BTW, the future of the world hinges on the perception and judgment of these people in about a month. =)

I heard about this earlier today. It's just disgusting. If you're gonna off yourself, go it alone, don't involve others.

Anyone hear the news about AIG. They get millions of dollars to help their company and a lot of the execs go on spa and golf getaway and spend upwards of a million dollars. Why these assholes aren't in jail already just goes to show how deep the corruption runs. Truly sad.
