Conan O'Brien's final show

Late Night with Conan O'Brien is sadly coming to an end tonight. It breaks my heart, but I'm sure they're going to play lots of great footage from over the years (which they have been doing the past few episodes) I don't know how many of you are into Conan, but I just thought I'd post a reminder. Make sure to tune in!

I for my part, will not miss Conan, since I was not a late night viewer of his show. It may not be the same now with the new show, but at least he's still on tv.

Who's replacing hi -JIMMY FALLON?! UGH!

Is he going to be able to keep a straight face through an interview, or will he just break his lines and laugh through the whole thing, like his whole career on SNL?

NBC really has been on the decline...and with this even more

Wow, Jimmy Fallon's show REALLY sucks. The guy can't stop stuttering.. I can't wait till Conan comes back on. If his new show is half as good as it was, it will still be comedic gold compared to Fallon's shitty show.

I'll be back.
Now with conan's intro for the tonight show, I know what he was doing all this time. Running through the states to get to CA. It's been ok so far fo the first 20 minutes.

Mostly looking foward for Pearl Jam.

It's the same old Conan show. That's why it was lame to fuck with it in the first place. I'm so glad they have the Max Weinberg 7 playing the good old Conan theme, and I think they still have all the same main writers/actors. The set is a little intense, but it will evolve to what it needs to be. The only thing I think is really missing is Joel Godard, but he was getting a little old..

The show still comes on too late for me to watch during the week, except maybe on Fridays if I'm at home. :guts:

I was suprrised they kept all the same music and stuff, and my dismay at hearing a different announcer than Joel quickly became a pleasant surprise when it turned out to be Andy. It definitely wasn't Conan at his best though, they had a great audience but material just seemed a bit flat and forced, but it was the first show and the expectations are just too high too soon (honestly, I would have flicked it off if not for the sake of watching it just to see it =), so hopefully he'll be able to find his groove, and sooner rather than later with Leno turning up the heat on him in September. Otherwise Will Ferrel "goodbye" joke will be... well, a lot funnier actually. =)

I'm going to go check out episode 2 right now.

Update: So far much better, the monologue jokes are still lame and reliant on bits and sketches to be funny, but it's already much more comfortable and like the old Conan (there was even a Predator reference, instant win). Better guests tonight too, but why is it just one interview and the musical guest?

Update 2: It's over. Way better show. It was like Conan's Late Night with higher production values and only a slightly dulled edge, which is what you'd hope for. And actually, forget dulled edge, because Tom Hanks was absolutely manic, guy was drunk or high or somethin, but he gave Conan his all. He's always funny in interviews, but I've never seen him that up. Green Day gave Conan a liviler musical performance, and a guitar, which was cool. All in all, if the first show was a misstep, albeit understandable, I'd say he regained his footing fast.

There have been a few of these now, hopefully they'll do more. The best part is when they're explaining the far-out plots to Conan and Andy, and they just sit there with blank expressions on their faces.

Watch it on NBC's site if you missed it.

Then the TMZ Web site, citing undisclosed sources, said Leno's show would go on hiatus Feb. 1. Following the Olympics (which take place in Vancouver from Feb. 12-28), Leno will take back the 11:35 p.m. EST time slot he occupied for 17 years that ended last May.

This would make Leno's successor at "The Tonight Show," Conan O'Brien, "the odd man out," TMZ said.

But late Thursday, The New York Times reported that NBC executives have a plan in the works to return Leno to 11:35 p.m. in a half-hour edition, pushing O'Brien to 12:05 a.m., followed by "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" at 1:05 a.m.

The revamped lineup would go into effect after NBC concludes its Olympics coverage, the Times reported.

NBC spokeswoman Rebecca Marks declined to comment on the report.

In a statement released Thursday, NBC said, "Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the world today. As we have said all along, Jay's show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network. It has, however, presented some issues for our affiliates. Both Jay and the show are committed to working closely with them to find ways to improve the performance."

While this statement didn't clearly refute the Web reports that Leno's show would be dropped, a clarification from NBC executives denied "The Jay Leno Show" has been canceled.

Thursday night, NBC issued yet another statement expressing the network's commitment "to keeping Conan O'Brien on NBC. He is a valued part of our late-night lineup, as he has been for more than 16 years and is one of the most respected entertainers on television."

Look out, Conan! :isidro:

That's some deafening silence from NBC on the reports of Jay bumping Conan, though it's not like people didn't see this scenario coming when they started this messy experiment. Conan was already screwed over before he started with this whole Jay Leno show going on in the same city, on the same network, vying for the same guests, in prime time, before his neutered Tonight Show. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out, Leno sounds ready:

During his monologue Thursday, Leno milked some laughs from the "rumor floating around that we were canceled. I heard it coming in this morning on the radio. So far, no one has said anything to me."

But if it's true, he joked, "it will give us time to do some traveling. I understand that (the) Fox (network) is beautiful this time of year."

"I don't think there is any truth to the rumors," he went on, referring to his frontrunner status in the ratings when NBC took him off "The Tonight Show."

"See, it's always been my experience that NBC only cancels you when you're in first place," Leno cracked. "So we are fine. We are OK."

The message is clear that if Leno is the one squeezed out he's going to do all he can to haunt them on another network.

Yep, the tea leaves read true, and the disaster continues...

Statement issued by Conan:

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

Fuck Jay Leno, his show sucks even worse than it did before. If Conan's Tonight Show is lost, and he leaves NBC, I'm boycotting that channel and deleting it from my TV.

That'll show those bastards!

Leno is definitely being cagey, he's not going to stand in solidarity with Conan, but I don't blame him either, it's not like it's on him to quit TV and make things easier for NBC and Conan. He has his own beef with the situation in that NBC forced him out, or tried, while he was still generating a billion dollars a year for them as host of the Tonight Show. Whether we watched it or not, it was doing relatively excellent, and really, the only reason to change was that they were scared of losing Conan, but they obviously were scared of losing Jay too and just plain couldn't make a decision. I'd have tried to have kept it the way it was, promised Conan he'd get Tonight whenever Jay walked, and then left it up to Conan whether he could live with that or not, and see how long that worked. This obviously hasn't worked out for anybody, and now Conan, commendably, is again forcing them to make a choice. Unfortunately, by going on the offensive, they're most likely going to let him be the one that "quit."

I say Conan should go to CBS and sign on to replace Letterman when he retires, continue the other late night tradition. :guts:

I always preferred Letterman over Leno back when I used to randomly catch the late night shows. Also, it'd be poetic, Conan taking over for Letterman once again like he did with the Late Late Show.

I also found Letterman's jabs at Carson Daly pretty hilarious on the link Walter posted.

Other late night hosts have come to Conan's defense, or just want to take a shot at Leno.

The aforementioned whole show parody of Jay Leno by Kimmel, man is his bandleader effective with the Kevin Eubanks style dopey comments and fake laughter:

Yeah, I have been watching Conan lately, even before this fiasco. Between the commercials I switched to Kimmel and saw those clips. It really sucks though, I really I have been enjoying Conan way better than Leno. I even tried to watch Leno last year and it was pretty dull. I guess NBC is more screwed up than it seemed.

Thank you very much for that podcast. very good up to date information (I listened to the whole thing). I'm really upset this is happening to Conan. I do hope - whatever happens - that he has SOME show on SOME network. As I seriously believe he is the funniest host on TV right now.

Only a few TV shows I'll watch: scrubs, family guy, and Conan. You can't beat them imo.
