I'm curious as to what sort of significance that inscription around the brand has, in a historical and spiritual sense. I have an incredible idea for a tattoo but I don't exactly want to go into it with complete ignorance and look like a poster boy for a lesser known religion or something. I'm just very interested in the meaning or ideology behind images like this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, haha.

"If I could strike one blow to spite their force, though I might bear one hundred more, I would wear the welts like rubies, and the shackles for a crown. And if I had one hundred hearts I would throw them all before their bullets before I'd sell a single one to wield their power. So lest we fall out of love with life, let us give all we have to give - for only a fool would cling to this world."

It's inspired by old grimoires like the Key of Solomon, books on the occult that were themselves inspired by older Kabbalistic and Alchemical texts. I can't tell you exactly what each symbol means, and honestly I doubt anyone could unless they were a specialist of these texts. However Miura based himself on a protective talisman to create this one, so whatever meaning there is to it is unlikely to be negative.

That being said, I don't think it'll work well as a tattoo given how small the characters are.

Hahahha cool, it's a hammer and a mortar-shlooping thing!  lol
The bottom center looks ankh-ey of course, you've got a star of david, an islamic lookin moon, and I think the circle with the dot in is an egyptian sun sign.  Some of the other characters look a little hebrew-ey.  Anyone else regonize any other components?

Thanks for all the information so far! Conveniently enough, I work in a book store so I can research this more based on what you guys have told me. Much appreciated! As far as the tattoo goes, I was going to enlarge it and have it placed on the back of my arm just above my elbow, brand included. Definitely would not mind having a Berserk-inspired piece on my skin for sure.

The bottom center looks ankh-ey of course . . .

Actually, it's reminiscent of a glyph that the Elizabethan scientist/magician John Dee designed.

Possibly, but to me it looks more like a combination of an ankh and the crescent-moon crown that Thoth & a few other Egyptian pantheon types sometimes wore.

In the site

http://homepage2.nifty.com/side_b/world_magic.html

there is a reference to a book by David Conway and I believe that Miura could use that book as guide for the magic in Berserk.

In japanese the book is http://www.chuoart.co.jp/book/b8943.html, but I don't know the english version.

The book is Magic: An Occult Primer. However like I said the actual source for the symbols composing the talisman is old grimoires, like the Key of Solomon, Le Petit Albert and so on. Conway's book is a sort of beginner's guide to magic.
