They didn't sell her off, they just let her go work as a maid for the noble. They got nothing out of it, and it was the promise of a better life for her. They hesitated but given their poor life conditions, eventually they accepted his offer. Obviously they didn't know he was planning to use her as a sex slave (even though they must have been worried about her well being in general).
Also, Forest Wraith, I don't think "avarice" is what you meant here. More like lust. Anyway this thread's a mess so I'm locking it.
