Nothing like playing a FPS then getting to see your dead body tea-bagged by XXXxxHardAssUSMCxxXXXX in 3D! :troll:

According to the reviews I have seen around the best 3d experience seems to be for RTS, I would love to play dawn of war 2 with those glasses *drools.

I knew I read somewhere where you dont need a new monitor or anything! Here it is!

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3180811&pagenumber=1

Just need regular 3D (Red and Blue) glasses and an nvidia card that is a GeForce 8800 or better!

I just realized, I'm at serious risk of turning into a hardware nerd.

Because I think /this/ http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835214001 is beautiful:

120mm! 1500 RPM, moving 69.15 CFM, at only 18 dBA! Bat-wing inspired blades! RED blades!

...

Augh.

(seriously though, learning a ton of stuff, which is always awesome)

When dealing with CPU fans, decibel level is definitely something to keep in mind, as you apparently have already noted. My old PC had a zalman heatsink with a 7200rpm fan attached. To quote Sir Mixalot, "it got it goin like a turbo jet," and sounded like one too. I could barely sleep with the thing in my room in college. Had to put the thing to sleep.

And then it was too quiet! :mozgus:

Then you put this song on an cd and have it on replay!

More on topic, the bigger fans tend to be a lot quieter then their smaller brethren.

You probably won't need to buy additional case fans if you get yourself a good case in the first place. In fact, adding additional fans when it's not needed can lessen the effectiveness of your cooling.

It's currently the best 24" monitor out there, plain and simple. If you want something bigger, I recommend the ViewSonic VX2835WM.

My friend is looking for a 24" screen and I was supposed to give him some recommendations. Then I saw your recommendation of the Hyundai W240D V2, but I could not find any reviews/information on it.

It would be great if you could point me to where I can obtain relevant information on the LCD you mentioned. Thanks! :guts:

I've briefly looked around and only found few reviews in English, which seems strange to me as well. Here they are anyway:

Newegg also has reviews on each products, you can read them here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824179047&Tpk=Hyundai%20W240D

We have some pretty solid websites that test and review hardware over here and those are what I base myself on personally. They're in French though, so they're useless to you. You should also know that the "v2" thing is informal, it only refers to the fact that when the monitor was originally released there were problems with it. It was re-released shortly after, but shops didn't indicate the difference. Since then however I'm pretty sure all the early versions have disappeared from the market.

Thanks for the extremely fast and detailed reply. However, I just discovered that the monitor is currently not on retail in my country. I hope your efforts have helped someone else though!

Too bad. Maybe it's called differently over there though? I know product names differ depending on the region sometimes.

Yea, it's a real shame. Being from Singapore, our market is real small, so our selection is usually pretty limited. I guess it's just not economical at the moment for Hyundai monitors to retail here. The only brands the shops here usually offer are just Samsung, BenQ, ViewSonic, and the online Dell offers. :judo:

Also keep in mind that the two former were the Radeon 4870 x2 and the GTX 290 which both are actually two GPU's put togother where the 5870 is only one GPU.

If you think that is crazy, check out the bench mark for two 5870's in crossfire mode!

Well, I found myself with some disposable income, and after 7 years of having the same computer (which was budget even when I got it)... well... I went overboard. I managed to snag the new 5870 right when it came out, and I put in a i7 920 with a Megahalems cooler to keep it frosty when I inevitably try to overclock it. 6GB 1600 RAM, two 1TB caviar blacks in RAID1 for storage and a 120GB OCZ SSD for OS and applications. All of it housed in a Lian-Li P80 Armorsuit case.

I've only had it set up for a couple days, but no problems so far. This system runs like a dream compared to my old computer. So far no regrets... I just hope I don't run into financial issues down the road that make me look back negatively on this.

That sounds like a sexy piece of computer you have right there. I think you should have gone a little bit extra and gotten another SSD and raided them in 0 for super blind fast speed.

It was tempting, but since I spent so much on other parts of the computer by the time I was considering getting SSDs in RAID it was just too much. To be honest one SSD has been amazing so far and more than fast enough considering what I use a computer for.

Well folks, this is a little old but its still worth it. Leave it to ATI to bring another awesome piece of hardware. The ATI 5850!

http://techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/HD_5850/

Some of the highlights of this card are...
-It can be unlocked and reach stable settings that match the 5870!
-Uses LESS power then the previous generation of card's. So if you have a 4870 series running with your current PSU, you can rest easy knowing that you can run the 5850
-A whole lot cheaper!

Question about my video card, to anyone that may know. I have a 9600GT, but I want to ensure that it's comparable in performance to an 8800GT (bigger number = better, RITE?! :carcus: ). Here's the system specs for both. The difference seems negligible to me, but I may be overlooking something.

8800GT:
Core Clock 600MHz
Stream Processors 112
Memory Clock 1800MHz
Memory Size 512MB
Memory Interface 256-bit
Memory Type GDDR3

9600GT:
Core Clock 650MHz
Stream Processors 64 (is this difference actually important...?)
Memory Clock 1800MHz
Memory Size 512MB
Memory Interface 256-bit
Memory Type GDDR3

The reason is this: Mass Effect 2 system requirements.

You should be fine Walter unless you plan on playing in a resolution that is 1650 x 1050 or more! Is it a laptop or desktop that you are using?
