I think the "In Vain" reading of the title could mean that Guts is wondering if his trip is all in vain. Skull Knight told him that if Casca is cured, she may not want the same thing that Guts does. If a sane Casca chooses not to follow Guts, he could lose her all over again.

Yeah, that's pretty much how we've interpreted it/thought of it (but not necessarily that Casca would refuse to accompany Guts, in that scene SK may rather have been referring to her simply not wanting to regain her sanity).

I guess I feel that if Casca was sensing some kind of demon, Guts would too and he wouldn't have a sad, concerned look on his face while looking at her. My expectations are more character development instead of totally rad monster fights with giant swords. Not that I'd complain, or anything.

Well their looks weren't those of people looking/sensing a monster in any case.

I would just like to point out that for all the rambling concerning Guts appearance and whatever Casca is looking at, we have seen a large amount of progression by Farnese.  I know people have already mentioned this, but it's really remarkable. Consider the fact that Griffith is afraid (or at least worried about) of magic users, the addition of another to Guts' band (although it's certainly going to take her time to develop) is probably more worthwhile than debating how Guts is going to take on the Godhand or whether he is emo...

Yeah it's actually pretty sad that people completely ignored this in the 286 thread... Farnese' development since her introduction has been huge and I personally find it incredibly pleasing to see how far she's reached, even putting aside her usefulness for the group or other such more practical matters.

Casca could see something coming without it be apostle/god hand/ghost related though.  It could be a big storm, rogue wave, another ship, or even a sea monster.  I don't think any of those would cause their brands to bleed would they?

Depends, but if it were an astral creature or something similar (ghost ship) they'd sense it.

Nice stuff man, thanks a lot. Great episode as always, very profound and touching. And all those burn marks on Guts' body... It's even worse than it looked in the last episode.

Thanks for the ep Saiya. Can't wait for the translation of this one!! I like these kind of ep based on the character development, gives some depth to the story!
I m guessing that Guts at the end of the ep. somehow refuses to put on his fake hand. It's seems to me that he is trying to decide what to do once he reaches Elfhelm (and after period) => hang on and fight or stay put and enjoy the time he has left... :badbone:

Damn Guts is messed up.  And he's once again feeling the effects of the armor.

I feel sorry for the guy, not for his battle wounds as that is the price he has to pay for his vengeance, but his situation with Casca.  He is constantly being punished for one moment of a loss of self control.  And he's trying so hard but to no avail she still hates and fears him.

As for the arm thing.  I don't know, part of me (the wild speculation part) thinks that the arm(less) scene might foreshadow the possibility of a new arm of some kind for him.  Who knows what Elfhelm has in store for him.  I see a lot of his wounds at least getting healed up there cause damn, he is a mess right now.

Actually it doesn't look that bad, she did actually reach for his hand, (though at first she didn't) even tho he couldn't close it because it was the metal one, and I don't think she tried to get away from him when he went after her in the water.

And yeah I think hes probably going to get healed up at Elf Helm maybe regain his arm and eyes, and maybe the scars will get fixed up.

Like Wii Fit, this episode delivered enormously with one low-impact amount of effort required.

I like to use the word "depressing" for episodes like this, but it's not really. It just saddens me to see Guts and Casca like this. From the looks of things, she trusted him enough to reach out... but Guts dropped the ball, so to speak. I'm happy we've got some time to see some Guts time. His introspection always reminds me why he's such a compelling character. To see him in such a sorry state makes me hope that the Hanafubuku Oh can do something for him. Obviously, the arm, a focal point of the episode, is beyond repair -- but anything to ease his suffering would be welcome right now.

So, turns out she was really looking at nothing... accept the apostle Seagull, that is. Thanks again, Saiya!

Hanafubuku might be able to restore Guts arm, I think I remember back in episodes 1 or 2 Guts tendons were cut during his torture, and that was why he couldn't move, and puck was able to heal that. So maybe the king of Elfs has more healing capacity.

I'm sure that's what Miura was aiming for when he had Guts hack the shit out of his arm during the eclipse: "It looks painful, but he gets a new one later!"... yeah, I cannot see it happening. The poignancy would be completely ruined and pointless. It's a part of Guts as an identify now, along with the Dragonslayer. Albeit a less obvious part.

On that note, I'm going to place my bets with Casca not being healed. My hat is now officially in the speculation ring.

Well Casca's insanity is another impairment of the eclipse so if that can be undone then perhaps Guts other injuries can be as well.

You're right. Psychiatric specialism and prosthetic surgery is basically the same profession. We'll really have to wait and see if the translations give us some more hints before this debate floods the entire topic.

Well magic did temporarily give Guts a new right eye when he was one with the blaze wheel against that massive water serpent.

I'm thinking some of those scars will be fixed up at Elfhelm. Somehow, I can't see Guts spending the rest of the story looking like that. Of course, I have nothing to base that on.
