News & Not News / Cyber-bully charged after teen hanged herself

Woman, posing as a boy on MySpace, dumped girl after flirting with her. -ST

LOS ANGELES - A US federal grand jury has indicted a woman accused of using a phony online identity on MySpace to trick and taunt a 13-year-old girl, who committed suicide in response to the 'cyber-bullying'.

Prosecutors, in a highly unusual move, turned to a federal law generally employed in computer fraud cases to indict 49-year-old Lori Drew.

The girl, Megan Meier, hanged herself in her bedroom two years ago shortly after being jilted by an Internet suitor who she thought was a 16-year-old boy.

The case caused a furore when it was alleged that the 'boy' was actually Drew, a neighbour, whose daughter had had a falling-out with Megan.
Drew had created the MySpace profile to see what Megan was saying about her daughter online.

Drew, of Dardenne Prairie, Missouri, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Los Angeles. She is accused of providing bogus information to Beverly Hills-based MySpace when she created an account in the name of the imaginary boy, Josh Evans.

She used the account to obtain information about Megan in violation of MySpace rules, which she used 'to inflict emotional distress' on the girl, prosecutors alleged.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, US Attorney Thomas O'Brien said he believed it was the first case of its kind.

He said Drew, posing as Josh, began flirting with Megan, telling her via e-mail that she was 'sexy'.

The flirting went on for weeks and their correspondence took on an increasingly sexual tone before Josh abruptly cut off the relationship.

Mr O'Brien said Josh told the girl 'the world would be a better place without her'.

'This adult woman allegedly used the Internet to target a teenage girl with horrendous ramifications,' Mr O'Brien said. 'This was a tragedy that did not have to happen.'

Drew's lawyer, Mr Dean Steward, denied that his client either created the MySpace account or directed anyone else to do so.

'There are a lot of issues we're going to need to raise, including why this case is happening in Los Angeles,' he said. 'All of the witnesses are from Missouri, with one or two exceptions being from MySpace.'

Drew, who faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted, is expected to be arraigned in Los Angeles next month.

News of the indictment left Megan's parents in tears. They said they had all but given up hope that any criminal charges would be filed in their daughter's death.

'I just want some justice after all this time,' Mr Ron Meier said.

'For the first time in as long as I can remember, I actually have hope.'

The local and federal authorities in Missouri initially looked into the circumstances surrounding Megan's October 2006 death in Dardenne Prairie, an upper-middle-class town situated 56km northwest of St Louis, but declined to file charges, saying they were unable to find a statute under which to pursue a criminal case.

Prosecutors now argue that the federal statute applied in the case because by providing false information and violating the user agreement of MySpace, Drew was seeking information 'to further a tortuous act, namely, intentional infliction of emotional distress'.

Specifically, Drew is charged with one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing protected computers without authorisation to obtain information.

Among those questioned by the grand jury, according to sources, was Ashley Grills. The 19-year-old, a former temporary employee in Drew's advertising coupon business, allegedly was also involved in the hoax.

Earlier this year, she told ABC News' Good Morning America that she, Drew and Drew's teenage daughter had taken turns typing out messages to Megan.

During the interview, Grills said Drew tapped out messages 'when we didn't know what to say'.

She said Drew told her to keep mum after Meier's suicide.

Since there is no official thread in this i decided to create one... For I feel it deserve to have its own thread here...

For the rest, this seem to be a collaboration of both japan and Thailand film but still... she kickass

Apparently in real life this gal has an impressive taekwando background, not bad with all the stunt she is pulling out...  :isidro:

Oh just for a slight spoiler, the storyline is way better than Ong Bak and Tom Yung Goong, seriously...  Thailand film has come a long way... :badbone:

Did anyone notice anything about Daiba's fingernail...

After one page...

Look like it grew pretty fast, doesn't it?  :carcus:

A question that struck me all of sudden...

So does she know? And since he's leading all these monsters, one could easily deduce Griffith as the main leader/villian of the devilish minions...

If she does know, why is she still so close with Griffith?

Since this is the Shooting the Breeze section, might as well as just ask if anyone read and like the manga.

I'm not sure what you guys think, but this was the one of the very few comic I read so far that came ever close to Berserk (in term of my favourite list), best part was 70% of the content in the story was just pure fighting.

Ayone share the same idea? :SK:

Manga Mausoleum / Any idea how skullknight knew the name of DS?
« on: August 18, 2007, 02:00:22 PM »
Skullknight mention about "Your Dragon Slaying Sword can pierce through" when Guts was being held by Slan.

Just curious, how did he know that name of the sword?

Maybe SK eavedrop when Godot told Rickert about the origin of the sword?  :SK:

Speculation Nation / Does Griffith actually "talk" to the apostles?
« on: July 21, 2007, 12:09:33 AM »
Does he even command them? He seem like he has never spoken any words at all to his immortal men. The only time I remeber ever doing that was when he tell Zodd to stop his battle in vol 22 and when he accept all the recruitment of the great apostle... All back in vol 22.

Just something interesting I have find out.

How will be beast be affected once Guts wound is cured by King hanafubuku

Will be the beast be suppressed permanently? Or maybe he wont be turning into Beast again (Even after wearing the berserker armor) once the wound is gone?

Any speculation ::)

Speculation Nation / With the introduction of the Fire wheel DS...
« on: May 05, 2006, 03:54:06 PM »
I just had this weird thought... But think about it... Given the power of the fire wheel incorporate with DS... Isidro fire dagger has become pretty insignificant... In fact in comparsion, Fire wheel DS is like a giant version of Isidro dagger, if someone did realised.

Serp wind cloak and sword did show it usefulness and its potential damage it is able to create. But fire dagger... Erm... Pale in comparsion...

I don't know.. Unless fire pixies can be more powerful than fire wheel elemental?

Manga Mausoleum / Anyone wonder how Guts met Godot?
« on: November 10, 2005, 02:11:59 PM »

Shootin' the Breeze / How do you go after the one you love?
« on: November 10, 2005, 01:18:27 PM »
How you guys/gals go after someone you have crush in?

An interesting question I would suppose... Especially to those who already have a stead... Just curious to how you all do it..

It would be best if you can give some advice... Hehe  :guts:

There is this interesting though that hit me... Well lets say the eclipse didnt start at all and the orginial hawk still remain as the strongest army in the midland... will the old hawk stand any chance defending midland?

Just a thought  :casca:

After going through some of the discussion here... This idea struck my mind... As we know, it was guts wound by Slann that provoked the beast... But what if the wound is heal after they reached Elfhelm? Will that mean Guts will be able to control the armour better?

Will Guts be able to tap his power from the beast one day while still remaining conscious (We all know how powerful is the Beast Guts)?

Speculation Nation / Speculating the outcome....
« on: April 22, 2005, 10:34:39 AM »
A sad new everyone... as you all may have noticed the next exciting episode will on another tormenting month away... but again for this period of break i guess it would nice if we can speculate the process and the outcome of the fight...

Throw your opinion in guys  8)

IMHO Guts will win eventually but not without a tough fight with Serpico... Guts will have to crash many pillars before even getting near Serp, Guts suffered small cuts (a long time ever since any human -except for Serp- have done that), but just a slash from Guts might prove fatal... Both will suffer wound with Serpico in more critical condition -A few slashes perhaps-...  and as he was about to retreat... Guts wound suddenly affect him again, slowing his movement and even his reflexes... Serp at this point move in and penetrate his sword deep into Guts chest, where the exact Slann wound is... In this very particular moment, I am speculating Guts out of anger slam his flat surface of his DS on Serp against the pillars (injuring him seriously in the process instead of killing him)... Serp will be suffering internal injuries at this point... As he was about to get up he realise Guts is on top of him, with his DS slightly a few inches above Serpico... Guts give him a chance by asking him to give up and admit defeat, saying all this with breathing difficulty and pain... knowing that time is running out he is beginning to lose conscious... the outcome of him just fainting or becoming a beast will depend solely on Serpico's decision... ...

Maybe we can have a competition in determining who can get the closest speculation for the fight when the next episode come out (I got a feeling the battle may not end in just one chapter)

Speculation Nation / Speculation for Vandimion's involvement
« on: March 25, 2005, 11:48:59 AM »
What plan does Miura have by involving the whole family of Farnese into the story plots? (I raised this question because I didn't even expect her mother was involved too :P)

Any speculation? Is Vandimion that powerful? Or maybe he is an apostle? (Just an example... :-X)

Shootin' the Breeze / What is becoming of the World today?
« on: December 30, 2004, 02:22:57 PM »
There was this guy who once predicted that after Y2K, disasters will occur one after another and some of it will be so catastrophic that it will change our lives forever....

He wasnt completely wrong, first we got the millennium bug, followed by 911, SARS outbreak, Bird flu, Heat wave in Europe and now this tsunami...

If i am not wrong, just 3 months ago an entire island was submerged by flood with 26000 lives unaccounted for... But this i was not very sure

What is the world becoming today? The next time we know it may be like Armageddon, an comet that threaten to wipe out our very existence...
