Beloved YTMND Robbed!!!

If you've checked YTMND today, you've probably noticed that they were finally attacked by the dreaded empire of Ebaum's World. Currently, Ebaum's World's forums are being spammed by YTMND enthusiasts. I hope Ebaum learns his lesson.

what exactly does ebaum do when they attack a site? I've heard they have stolen stuff before, but that is all I know... :???:

"Should I be overcome by the vapors?
This was all I could find and it's coming from Wikipedia, so who knows:

"YTMND is the latest target of eBaum's World for alleged content theft. The gif hosted on the page Lindsay Lohan doesn't change facial expressions was branded with the eBaum's World watermark and been posted on the site. This caused an uproar in YTMND and massive amounts of anti-eBaum's YTMNDs have appeared. Additionally, YTMND users have contacted others from Newgrounds, 4chan, adult swim, KNova, Fark, LUE, LivingWithStyle and LUElinks to spam the website; the eBaum's World forums have repeatedly gone down and its chatbox is backlogged."

It wouldn't surprise me, just about everything on that site is stolen from somewhere.

Is there nothing one can do? I would think that if someone had proof it was their content, then this guy would be in site would be in deep trouble. If they steal so much, they are bound to be busted one day, right?

There is nothing funny about the internet.

Yeah, when people make money by downloading illegal content off eMule or BitTorrent and reselling it either on eBay or directly from a website sponsored by shops and whatnot that requires a $14.99 monthly fee and donations, it's not funny. Especially since these guys make A LOT of money, and never get in trouble (hopefully bound to change some vague day in the far away future).

Instead of lamenting ourselves about it we can have some fun thanks to sites like YTMND though. Anyway, I'm glad they're reacting like they do, and I know whose side I'm on. :badbone:

Just for those who don't know:

eBaum's world is essentially like any other flash etc. archive site, in that it's basically a gigantic archive of flash games, movies, animated gifs, and other stuff. The difference is that eBaum's World nabs their stuff off other websites, then not only fails to credit the original source but then slaps their watermark on it, essentially claiming it as theirs. What's worse is that they make massive amounts of money because of all the add companies trying to make sales off all the traffic they get. What makes this such a big deal is that they steal from almost everyone. Most of this gets blamed on the founder/owner of the site, Edward Baum I believe, but to be fair I think a lot of the blame lies with many viewers who allow him to get away with it. Admittedly, a lot of casual viewers don't know what's going on, but one can be sure that a hefty percentage do. [/rant]

Eric Bauman actually. Not that it matters much. Anyway, I heard they also had problems with Sega recently, apparently they stole a Super Monkey Ball flash game and linked it directly from Sega's servers, so it's bandwidth theft as well as intellectual property theft. That's rather reckless if you ask me.

Now isn't that playing with fire? I mean, I think a company like Sega would be able to shut that down or something. Wow, this is really getting me mad, i enjoy that game. Is there anything a single man like I can do?

You could spam their forums, though this usually just gets labled as immature.  Better is to stay above their level and just write a long message voicing your disaproval.  Let them know they crossed the line.  That and then there's the simple act of boycotting their site.  They get money from ads, so you can make them less travelled and therefor less valuable to marketting companies.  There are lots of little things that make difference en masse.

Edit: And I'm proud I miswrote his name.

Yeah, I have never been to the site before, and I was curious to see what a dick heads web site might look like, but I was afraid my computer would get stupider by visiting it, so i decided against it. Guess I will keep staying away from his crap, and in some way, help the fight. I will now have a picture of the beast eating my anger. :chomp:

Well the first most noticble outcry against Ebaumsworld was from Somethingawful.com when they made this special site...

www.ebaumsworldsucks.com

Its one thing to steal something from the internet, since its just the nature, but its another to take something, take credit, and then make money off of it.

Ebaumsworld responds!

Copy and pasted for people who don't go there:

-----------------------------

For the last 36-48 hours, ebaumsworld.com has been the victim of a global cyber-terrorism attack allegedly conducted by an alliance of webmasters and their followers who disagree with our company's editorial process (See FAQ below). The attack has come in several forms including:
-a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack;
-Malicious attempts at gaining access to restricted parts of the site;
-Spamming our forum and chat rooms;
-Hacking into admin restricted accounts;

There have also been numerous personal threats made against individual eBaum's World staff members. Most recently, our physical Corporate Headquarters building was vandalized so we've been forced to hire on-site security personnel. We have also opened the dialogue with our local police cyber-crime unit which works very closely with the FBI in matters like this.

We have been working diligently day and night to reduce any ill effect these attacks may have on our users, but you may experience some technical problems or annoyances while you view the site until we finish the ongoing criminal investigation. Please bare with us during this time and rest assured we will be back at 100% very soon.

We want to thank all the people who have helped us through these last few days, especially the other websites and forums that contributed what they could, you know who you are.

FAQ
Q. What is cyber-terrorism?
A. Cyber-terrorism is defined as:
the premeditated use of disruptive activities, or the threat thereof, against computers and/or networks, with the intention to cause harm or further social, ideological, religious, political or similar objectives, or to intimidate any person in furtherance of such objectives.

Q. Why are you under attack?
A. The cyber-terrorists claim that ebaumsworld.com featured an animation created by an individual they represent without the permission of that individual. The animation in question can be viewed here.

Q. Did ebaumsworld.com steal this animation?
A. Absolutely not. We received this animation as a contest submission by someone claiming to be the original author. We have a digitally signed and dated consent and release form that was filled out by the author in question. In fact, it is our policy for ALL content we receive to be accompanied by this consent and release form before we feature it on the site. We also log contact information, the originating IP address and any information given to us about the original creator of any content, including any other proof of origin the author can provide. Beyond all of this, our editorial staff manually researches the origin of the content looking for references to or appearances of the same content on other websites. Any discrepancies are researched fully before a decision to post the material is made.

Q. So now what?
A. Good question. We're hoping these individuals come to their senses and stop the attacks immediately. There's a professional way to handle this situation. There are no grounds for these types of malicious, unethical, ILLEGAL attacks. We honor ALL requests to remove unauthorized material. If any original content creator wants their material removed or wants to be given credit, they can contact us. Contrary to all of the attacks and threats, WE HAVE YET TO RECEIVE ANY COMMUNICATION FROM ANYONE CLAIMING TO BE THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR OF THE ANIMATION IN QUESTION, OTHER THAN THE USER WHO SUBMITTED IT TO US. IF YOU ARE THE ORIGINAL CREATOR AND WANT IT REMOVED, BY ALL MEANS, PLEASE LET US KNOW.

...wow, they have a corporate headquarters... they must be rollin' in it

XD

Seriously, their "digitally signed and dated consent and release form" story is bullshit, I don't know how many people work there (HQ = basement at mom's house?), but they'll go nowhere in court with stuff like that. Especially since they've done a lot of "illegal cyber-terrorism" themselves.

"Cyber-terrorism?" :schierke: He's making it sound like YTMND is the fucking Al-Qaeda of the Internet. Big talk from a highschool dropout.  :troll:

Edit: my grammar sucks ass. Again.

I saw that earlier. eBaum's World might as well change their URL to www.hypocrisy.com. Considdering that they not only ignore the requests to take the items down but have posted malicious code on their own website to drain SA's bandwidth makes it a pretty sad little argument. I wonder if Eric Bauman will ever realize that the majority of the internet hates him.

Wow. Seriously. This gives me new hope for the future of mankind.

Also, I really wish I could get ahold of the guy who did the voice talent for the dramatic reading of Baum's letters. Pure. Comedy. Gold.

Not to mention that I've got a semi-similar situation on one website I'm running... A pissed off dad-slash-lawyer has been harassing me for the past two months because his daughter got slammed by people on the forums. Instead of asking me to remove the posts about her he goes on a moral crusade or some business seeking to shut down the site entirely.

Did you know that being insulted on a message board is equivalent to the Holocaust? If only the message boards citizens had spoken up, rather than retreating into complacency!

(I would pay money to have that voice actor read some of the ridiculous crap I've had to read lately.)
