actually i think that his private habits or behaviour shouldn t influence ur opinion towards a book he wrote! :(

"siddartha" is simply an outstanding piece of work that easily could for example challenge the story of berserk.
even if hesse would have been the biggest asshole in the world it wouldn t matter at all...

An authors way of life is very well linked to his creative output i think.
Take for example Thomas Mann, Berthold Brecht or everything the Beat Generation produced with their most prominent Authors Ginsberg Kerouac and Burroughs. Existencialists like Sartre or Camus, too. These are authors i truly admire for their ideas which were obviously linked to their characters and their personal fates.

(I truly hate G. Grass the wannabe left wing know it all asshole and his mediocre efforts in modern literature.)

BTW Siddartha is great and deserves to be a milestone.
Same thing as with Mozart and Beethoven. I love Beethoven, Bach and Schoenberg and therefore hate Mozart for being such a happy pop fag.

Sorry i'm very hard working on becoming more tolerant - just doesn't work yet :-/

i totally agree. i consider both - siddhartha and berserk -as creations on the highest level. beserk seems to be a bit more complex though, and in my opinion it has a stronger impact on the audience because miura uses a visual medium, because he uses pictures. Thus i guess it might be easier for some people to get involved into berserk.
Siddhartha on the other hand, as a novel, gives you a glimpse about what literature really is. it may enlighten you as you go on reading it just as berserk does.
They're both elusive creations on their own right.

Sorry i'm very hard working on becoming more tolerant - just doesn't work yet.

you didn't answer my previous question. how would you know that Hesse was a complete jackass - as you say - if you didn't personally meet him?

Sorry, didn't meet hitler either so i'll better stop saying he was an asshole maybe he was just the right buddy to have a drink with. ::) ::) ::)

As i said i consider it very important to know about an authors life to really understand his work so you have to read biographies, letters and then again comments by other authors of that time who refer to them(though many of them are based on personal feuds). From stuff like that you get to know a lot more than just were an author or artist lived.

Is There anybody out there?
Yea, I must agree that Slaughterhouse 5 was quite a good read, and for all that value it's only 100 pages or something short.

I also like the book A Prayer for Owen Meany. That seemed to have a very powerful story, with quite a bit of intermitting laughter in the tale.

And then there's always LOTR, which I have been reading since 5th grade ... and have never gotten tired of it.

If I think of any other good reads I'll let you know

around the corner
by the way, have you read the sequel by benford, brin, and bear. ; i read the 2 first books and it's truly weird, i heard by a 'asimov specialist' ( president of the NooSFere ) that the third was definitively a waste, deeply disappointing for it explained all the events that occured in the whole cycle of asimov ;
well what do you think of it ?

if u consider so...
well i consider that it is ok to know detailed information bout the author himself but...
u know most "good" books are built up in a way that allows many more than only one interpretation as we know from berserk or siddartha and many many others...

taking the living habits and other info bout the author into ur interpretation is just one other way of seeing or interpretating the story...

If you like vampires, you should definetly read some of Kim Newman aka Jack Yeovil's books. He got the best writing style I've ever read.

Confessions of a Mask...
If you’re interested in the Japan and Japanese culture, I would HIGHLY recommend “Sun and Steel” By Yukio Mishima. It’s only about 100 pages or so, but is without a doubt, the most powerful book I’ve ever read. Although this is just my opinion, Mishima’s mentality seems to be very much similar to that of gutts…

At any rate, it might be easier to just get this book from the library considering that most online stores seem to be out of stock. But you can read reviews and what not at:

(btw, Make sure to read the second review on the link below titled "Tragic Heroism" for more details on this book)

Sorry for being such an ignorant ass :-/

BTW any suggestions for other good Books on Japanese culture?
I once heard about a book that analyzed Samurai culture and its impact on modern age society.

:-[Re: Books

i beg you pardon? what does ignorance have to do with that?
ain't giving up, eh?
Just don't like his work and i don't like people who willingly move to the Bodensee or Bern which in Hesses case went very well with some hilarious colonialistic behavior (rather his wife than him, though i don't exactly know which as he had 3 of them).

Pleeze let me hate him fer god's sake i read the steppenwolf and siddartha as well as too fucking much secondary literature so i just want to have the right to bash him from time to time.
