Title: Lith's colors & tutorials
Post by: Lithrael on June 03, 2004, 08:15:50 AM
To keep from cluttering the board, I'll link to all my colorizations and tutorials here, and edit this post to update whenever there's something new.  Thanks!!  You all rock!

Colorizations: Haha!  I finally rebuilt my gallery thing here:

http://www.lithrael.com/ig/thumbnails.php?album=3

Have some stuff available at imageshack in case my site is down.

Totally forgot to link up the new tutorial!  That can be found here:

Cool, I really like the pages you colored ^^ Nice work getting all the blood colored it properly as well on the sea monster pic. That looks like tedious work. Anyway good job ^_^

Whoa...that new one is the best yet.....

So, have any plans on continueing the tutorial?
Title: Re:Lith's colors & tutorials
Post by: Lithrael on June 22, 2004, 08:54:57 PM
Yeah, the tutorial will continue, I'm just trying to pick a good page for it.  And I'm looking at other colorizations on the board to see what people really need help with, and that mostly seems to be the obnoxious edge finding stage.  Heh, and I looked for some other colorizing tutorials online and they use completely different techniques than I do...

Anyway, the The Berserk Armor page ended up hellishly complicated... (thanks for the compliments!)  but I guess I should finish the description of how I did it anyway, while I'm deciding what to do for a really useful tutorial.  I can probably do that in the next couple days (seriously this time, heheh)

Also, I'm working on assistant colors for a couple pages Jon Schaffer's doing.  The first one is done and it's gorgeous IMO.  They'll be posted when we finish the second one.

You're very welcome!  I will have a new tutorial up soon, I'm sorry it's taking me so long, I am a bum. heheh!

Now for today, a quick page from Chapter 243.  Griffith said not to color page six but I did it anyway.  Muahaha.

Thanks for all the compliments, guys!  :D  Happy Lith.  I was never a pro photo editor, I like doing it though..  if I'm lucky maybe I can get work in it sometime?  *chuckle* right now I do regular office work.

The next tutorial is still on the way, but here's another colored page!  The spooky moon kid again...

(http://www.lithrael.com/ig/albums/berserk_lith/normal_243_15_fullcolor.jpg) (http://www.lithrael.com/ig/albums/berserk_lith/243_15_fullcolor.jpg)

I actually painted out the shading grain on his face - I don't suggest anyone do that unless they are VERY patient.  However I do have a technique for getting rid of lighter grain that should be in the next tutorial.  Although even that one is not really worth the time unless you really really hate the grain being there.

Also, I'm thinking with this break in chapters right now, maybe we could launch the project people have been suggesting in the Art Work topic, and attempt to get the whole chapter colored before the next one comes out?  It'd help pass the time ;)

If anyone is interested and would like to volunteer to work on it, message me and I'll get things coordinated.  If it looks like it might actually happen, I'll start a topic for it for public coordination.

If you want to know the history; one day I was sitting at the computer looking at the competition other great artwork and I noticed that Lith had her own unique way of coloring scans. So I IMed her and asked if she wanted to color a scan together, being as how she has excellent background techniques and I have fair abilities in skin. She colored Casca's skin and the background and I colored Guts, Guts's armour, Guts's cape, Caskas armour and the grass they are sitting on. All in all it turned out great. We need to finish the other one Lith. ;D

All the colors look great except for the hair and the elf.  Those both look kinda out of place... kinda like they're not under the same orangeish light.  The elf is perfectly sensible, especialy with the aura surrounding it.  It almost looks like you just dimmed the brightness on the hair and added a few orangeish smudges...  Can't really suggest a way to improve it other then grab something green and look at it under orange light or maybe even actual sunset light.

Yeah, you're right.  The light gave me a lot of trouble.  Her hair kept coming out like mud no matter how much I fooled with it so I just left it like it is.  But hey, it's October, I'll probably run across a green wig I can check the lighting with, and be able to fix it.

Thanks for the critique!  Part of the reason I'm doing these colorizations is to teach myself how to use color..

Post by: Majin Tenshi on October 13, 2004, 12:00:05 AM
You could try keeping the hair green, but tint it a bit towards yellow, then give the hair an orange "shine" ... it'd be a ton of work I'd bet...  You'd have to match the shine to the curve of her hair.. basicly match it to every line that makes up her hair....

Beautiful job. If you would like, I could redo the hair and the elf for you. I have enough time to get that done. I redid our combination of 241. Looks pretty gnarly, if you want to throw it on sometime, get in touch and I can send it to you.

Aw, Jon..  wish you had the time to do more colors.  Your stuff rocks, the board will miss seeing new work from you.  (the page Jon and I are working on is the gallery of hanged Kushan from last chapter.)

Thanks for the compliments, folks! :D

LithColorCo News: I have several projects still in the works, including co-colors with Jon, but right now I just have one in-progress color for the board.

Hatu: well, quite a while, I'm a very slow worker.  For example, Azan here is still not quite finished, and I've been working on him for about 3 hours.

(http://www.lithrael.com/ig/albums/berserk_lith/normal_248_14_tempclr.jpg) (http://www.lithrael.com/ig/albums/berserk_lith/248_14_tempclr.jpg)

I'm absolute crap at making up colors, so if anyone has advice for Azan's colors or would like to do his weapon cool for me to paste in to this, I'd love it.

Lith you are still the best... but try to add colour to his eyes like red maybe?
Title: Re: Lith's colors & tutorials
Post by: DemonX on November 15, 2004, 09:02:45 PM
Excellent. You might want to make the eyes, like smith said, red, even though he is not an apostle. Red or light blue (matchs with armor) would probably work fine.
Title: Re: Lith's colors & tutorials
Post by: IV on November 16, 2004, 12:58:32 PM
That is fantastic work. ;D
I like the white eyes personally, because it seems that Azan is in berserk mode, like when Guts' eye goes white.

But I suppose red could work also, although I cannot see light blue. that would seem odd.

Hey folks!  Wow..  been a while.  I'm a slow bastard eh?  And I *still* haven't finished Azan, either.  Or the partial colors Jon left to me.  Or any new tutorials..  All those are still on the way!

But I do have a page from episode 250!  A little color for the head of the Vandimion family..

& thanks for all the compliments, guys!   :D

I might reupload this later with greying hair on him instead, if I can get it to look good.  And color advice is always welcome, if any of you guys are period costume buffs ;)

Also, I'm wondering...  If I did something like, say, set up Photoshop files with color layers ready to paint, would any of you grab them and try your hands at final colors?  I have one or two files I started on and ran out of steam (like page one from episode 250) that are set up...  Basically these have the outlines of the figures cut out so that you don't have to worry about edges, just choosing colors.

Woo!  Thank you!  :D  I really ought to just bite the bullet and go read some color theory stuff - if they taught me any at school I forgot it.  Though I gather that if I really wanted to be sophisticated I should be mixing my own digital colors like paint - and using Painter, and having a better computer.   :P

In any case, I got started on the bath stuff this weekend, since there is so much NAKED, and that is a lot easier to pick colors for...  I haven't finished any pages yet but here's one in progress.   ;)

The best pic IMO was the one Schierke pulls Guts out of his ''''bad trip'''. You really see the blood floating/smearing around(did I say that correctly??)...

Now I would like everyone's opinion on what I've done so far... But... I don't now know how to post my work anywhere... I usually see people do it with links and what not... If you don't have your own webspace, you can use a free image hosting service.  Something like www.photobucket.com, which is what I use.  After you upload your pictures to your album it's pretty simple to plop your images into your posts here at SK.net.

I really ought to just bite the bullet and go read some color theory stuff - if they taught me any at school I forgot it.

I know I'm a bit of a noob on this forum (first post!) but I know a little bit about color theory.  Here's the basics:
The color wheel.  You can find these anywhere.  Just make sure that thet correspond to the paint spectrum rather than the light spectrum (most computers use the light spectrum).  The color wheel is the basis for all color theory.  How you use it:

-First of all, the types of colors (this you probably know).  The three colors red, yellow, and blue are the primary colors of the paint spectrum.  With these, you can mix any other colors.  Mix them all together and you get brown.  When you only mix two, you get the secondary colors green, orange, and purple.  Mix a secondary and a primary and you get the tertiary, or intermediate, colors.

-colors that are across from each other (i.e., red and green, purple and yellow, etc.) will often make each other stand out much more.  Say, for instance, that you're painting a goblin (not relating to anything in Berserk).  You decide to give the goblin green skin.  By painting his eyes red, the color directly opposite green, and by using greenish or colors with low saturation, the red eyes will stand out a lot.  These are called complememntary colors.  Don't overdo it though, a picture that's about half pure green and half pure red will look like it stepped out of christmas.

-This rule can also be used by applying colors which form a triangle on the color wheel, such as all the primary or all the secondary.  Aparently this works for colors that form a square too, but that stuff's really advanced.

-Colors that are next to each other on the color wheel are called...something else that I can't remember.  Using this can work quite well if done correctly.  For example, Proj2501 used pretty much only red, orange, and purple in the pic he posted here.  The emphasis on the red helps depict the agression.  This technique is usually used to invoke a particular mood.

-Another thing to note:there are basically two categories of colors: warm and cold.  Warm colors are reds, yellows, and oranges while cool colors are blues, purples, and greens.  This is again is mostly used to invoke an emotion.  You wouldn't want to use blue to depict a scene of a warm and loving family.

-Basic Jargon:  Hue reffers to a color.  Saturation refers to how much black or white (which are considdered tints and shades, not colors) is mixed into the color.  Lithrael, for instance, uses mostly colors with a low saturation, which gives the pictures a very fairy-tale-esque look, in this case a very good thing.  Try not to vary the saturation too much though, or the picture won't look very uniform.  Acromatic reffers to a composition without color (i.e., the black and white illustrations straight out of the comic) and dichromatic reffers a two color composition.

That's about it, hope I didn't write too much.  And complements to your work, you're an awsome artist (I'm know a bit of theory, but my work can't compare.).

Great essay, Vax!  Thanks!  And thanks for the compliments, everyone!

I still have a few partial colors of Jon's that I will finish and post eventually.  Don't worry, I won't forget.

Heh, it's funny, the page of Schierke saving Guts, I tried to re-do it over one of thehawks' scans and it came out like crap.  They lost all the subtle halftoning, and it just doesn't work without it.

Now..  two pages in a ROW from Lith.  I'm working on page 3 also, but correcting for Casca's halftone is quite a pain in the butt.

Here they be.  Nekkid-ass Schierke ahoy.

Wow, to color a manga..  Probably a lot.  I'd be willing to work for maybe $250 a week, and I can do maybe three pages in a day if I really hammer it.  I haven't really tried to see how much I can finish full-time though.

While I disagree with the color choices (just cause I'm a fan of a dark, bleak, Berserk night; that looks almost too beautiful and colorful to nice =), nobody can deny that the look your style is very compelling. The smoke especially has been brought to life.

Wow, that looks great.  The only part I don't like is the smake at the bottom, which looks too light to be covering a blazing inferno.  I'd darken the glow from the fire and the smoke itself.  Of course, this is all just my opinion.

Wow, so cool. I lack superlatives to describe how good it is.

I wonder what Miura intended with the aura surrounding Irvine though, it's almost inexistent in your coloration (which is fine), but I think it's meant to be more prominent, considering the original picture.
Title: Re: Lith's colors & tutorials
Post by: Vaxillus on June 29, 2005, 08:42:12 PM
Great work Lith.  You did a great job on the colors. They give the scene a very warm feeling.

As for the aura, I've noticed that Miura actually does this a lot, probably to attract your eye to the character when they're put against a dark backgroung.  I think it isn't as important in a colored background, as the characters are colored and stand out on their own.  Just my take on it.

Hehe, I just love how you did the fog. :guts: The characters' colors seem a bit too dim though. I know it's supposed to be like that, but it feels like something's not quite right to me (and I can't find what, of course). Nevertheless, great take on a hard panel.

I like the desaturated colors a lot.  I do think that there needs to be a little something more punched up though, possibly just brightening Ganishka's eyes by using a lighter value.  There wouldn't need to be any color changes done, and it would bring the focus out even more.  You really captured the atmosphere well!  It feels like it's cold and windy in there.

Hahah, for free? And it'd take decades to do it alone, too.

You could probably meet Miura if you completed such a feat.

Hmm, I wouldn't be so sure about that. Now that we're on the subject of coloration though, I really wish Jets comics would republish the early Berserk volumes with the color panels actually painted like in the original AH episodes. They looked frigging great originally, and in the volumes in B&W it just doesn't look good. I know I'd buy them all again if they did that. End of digression.

In case you're replying to me, I meant the panels that Miura painted in the first place. There's not a lot of them and they look a lot better in their original colored form than in B&W. Otherwise I also like the B&W better, as long as it's what was intended and not just for cheap printing issues.

Agreed, the black and white versions in the volumes don't look that great.  I have the Berserk Illustrations book though (for the manga, not the anime) so there are a few of them in there and they look great.

At first I thought those were pencil sketches, but after getting the first art book courtesy of my loving girlfriend, I now know better.  Does look WAY better in color, in B&W they're all wearing lipstick.

Anyways, that one isn't quite up to your usual quality Lith.  Some of the color in the lower left side doesn't quite stay in its boundaries.  There's also a but too little contrast with the nobles.  It still looks better than I could do though, I love the colors you chose.  Ganishka looks increadible.

Heh, yeah, it was a rushed one.  I was trying to see if I could do a decent color in a mere four hours or so (I really need to learn to work faster).  I'll finish it properly 'later.'  The desaturated colors on the clothes are only about half legitimately meant to represent misty dimness, mostly it's just cause I still suck at coloring clothes and crowds, for the moment.

I find I can get good results pretty fast coloring in this sort of Miura Mist: wind whipped clouds, dust, fog....  pity about all the damn nobles standing in front of it.

Thanks for the feedback and advice, everyone!

yes they are nicely drawn but you should try to get the hole page being in one gamma because
in that way the colors will be too different one from another see this picture (http://) http://stukata.pochta.ru/260.jpg     not that this coloring is the best way to do, but when the hole composition is in one gamma it looks much better and wont get u comfused.

Well, Miura did the drawing, technically.

I kind of touched on this in IsolatioN's thread.  When you're talking about composing a Whole page, yes, its important that the eye follow the intended path of the story.  I don't believe "gamma" is the right word choice, considering what you showed as an example.  You could probably say to use a limited color palette, instead.  But that aside, from the two pics that you're quoting, I'd say Lith did a good job of doing that.  Both pages don't deviate too much from a set color palette (Irvine and Sonja's scene in particular).  Not everything needs to be tinted to make it uniform.

Yeah, not surprising it's good, eh? :void:

As a matter of fact, the picture Stukata posted as an example (here (http://stukata.pochta.ru/260.jpg), modified version of Lith's work) isn't faithfully colored. The scene takes place in a foggy, almost unlit room, not in a furnace. I just felt like pointing this out, aside from technical considerations. Here's Lith's unaltered coloration of that page for comparison. (http://www.lithrael.com/ig/displayimage.php?album=5&pos=17)

what i am trying to tell you is that the colors are too raw for this picture. You cant just put some colors like its some coloring kids book,i typed this to show you that you must put the picture into an atmosphere, not just some randomly chozen colors. For every drawing it is a law you must know that for creating a colored drawing that every color you put it must have from the other one. This is the
way for a picture to be made. What i am telling to you its not something i have discovered for myself,
you can find it in books or ask an artist. If the colors are too diferent and raw one from another then
there is no reason for doing this at all.

If you want to be credible, using correct colors to represent things would be a good start. In this case, fog isn't red and orange. That is a rule. I'll leave the technical explanation to CnC, he has to earn his pay after all. :void:
Title: Re: Lith's colors & tutorials
Post by: CnC on January 20, 2006, 07:03:19 PM
Firstly, your English is (for lack of a better word) a little raw.  I'll try to be concise here.

what i am trying to tell you is that the colors are too raw for this picture. You cant just put some colors like its some coloring kids book,i typed this to show you that you must put the picture into an atmosphere, not just some randomly chozen colors.

Well, they're obviously not chosen randomly.
By raw I'm assuming you mean a direct interpretation of how the surface would look in daylight, with no consideration for atmosphere, time of day, color temperature, etc.

This is not the case in these colors.

Like I said earlier in this thread and in another thread, consideration for the composition of the comic book (multiple panels) must be given a priority, but not at the expense of accurate representation of the drawing.
Your red tinting of the entire page, while uniforming the colors, is being done at the expense of accurate representation of the events in the story.  Its a tricky thing to balance: page uniformity, accurate (good) colors, story telling.

For every drawing it is a law you must know that for creating a colored drawing that every color you put it must have from the other one. This is the
way for a picture to be made.

What the...?
I can only assume you're speaking of a chosen color palette or color relationships.  Yes, its important for these to exist in a composition.  But it is by no means "Law", just theory.   Hence,  "Color Theory".

If the colors are too diferent and raw one from another then
there is no reason for doing this at all.

There are reasons to vary your colors, but adhering to a palette helps uniform the piece.  Theres a really good reason to make colors differ from the others.  They are focal points.  The eye is drawn to that contrast.  People use that all the time, for very good reason.

I'll leave the technical explanation to CnC, he has to earn his pay after all. :void:

You're very presumptuous for someone that just repeats what he read in books other people wrote. The fact is you're wrong and your vision in this case is excessively narrow. Look at this picture (http://cyberpingui.free.fr/gallerie/siudmak_005.jpg), it's by Wojtek Siudmak, a world famous painter. Contrasting colors work well together. You could be talking about something completely different though, it's hard to tell honestly.

Now maybe you could show us some of your own work, Mr. Artist?

You guys are all WRONG WRONG WRONG; your gamma's out of whack, and your work looks like it's on crack. You need to up the contrast flange and lower the procast dampeners because your horizontal pallete design is lacking consise shader-light-source variation numericals. Pathetic. I do like the orange gamma adjustment. Something about berserk and warm colors really look swell to me, but the original one that Lithrael did looks like it would fit better in the manga. That doesn't matter, you made erroneous statements, you got replies, you conveniently ignored them while replying worthlessly. We're on a discussion forum, so if you don't want people to comment on what you say then don't post. And if you do, don't complain about potential reactions.

And as you can see Lithrael understanded what i wanted to tell her.I know my picture's gamma is wrong, i wanted to show her that the coloring must have common atmosphere.

I'm afraid you're mistaken on her response, really. Her colors sure aren't perfect, but your post wasn't valid in any case. She's humble about her work, that doesn't automatically imply your "critic" was right, and actually it wasn't. People pointed it out, you couldn't reply due to your vast ignorance on the subject, case closed. Oh yeah, and should a picture really have atmosphere? You're captain obvious or something?

I'm not going to tremble infront of you just because you are the Administrator of the forum like i'm some insect compared to you.The people in this forum has to sit quiet and respect you

You've still not shown any of your personal work which I assume is non-existent, you still haven't answered any of the replies you got concerning your ridiculous "advice". You're just a 17 years old teenager from Bulgaria that's trying hard to give people lessons while he's got nothing to say, and is now miserably attempting to pass himself as a martyr since he can't coherently reply to people that actually know what they're talking about. Off-topic trolling time's over.

Anyways, Stukata, why don't you start a new topic regarding your own work? Show us some more of your colorations and what not?

Not going to happen. And you guys are nice and all but if Stukata's not listening to an admin and the moderator of the section he's most probably not going to listen to you, so don't waste your time. People like him only learn the hard way it seems, not a problem with me. Thanks for the effort in any case, I appreciate it.

Well, allow me to reiterate that constructive criticism is encouraged (http://www.skullknight.net/yabbse/index.php?topic=2596.0), if not necessary.  If theres something wrong with one of your colorings, my colorings, whoever, I think it should be pointed out.

Art doesn't really have rules.  We're judging these colorings based on the assumption that we're trying to accurately portray colors and atmosphere of that chosen scene/page/panel.  Any deviation from those rules should be stated or risk being incorrectly critiqued.

In the case of this argument with Stukaka, he suggested (through incorrect terminology) that there was something that needed to be fixed with one of your pages.  Now, he quoted 2 completely different pages than the one he edited.  The ones he quoted I thought were fine, the one he edited I kinda agreed with (didn't like the bright green bg on one of the panels, but he cropped that and did something else).  And since all we can do is judge on the assumption that the colors are supposed to represent the scene, Aaz was correct in pointing out that making everything red, while unifying, is out of place.
It was at the point where he based his argument on our apparent lack of art degrees when it became disrespectful, and no longer constructive ("tortured and mistaken fool of the rough destiny" was a tad pathetic, yet somewhat funny).  I don't care what language barriers there might be, this isn't constructive.

So, basically, critique away.  Point out what you think could be improved without hesitation, but when someone disagrees with you, handle the defense of your argument with politeness and courtesy.  This is how I'd like this section to run.
Cheers...

Poor Stukata.  He was only trying to help, and then there's this explosion because his English came across as a little high-and-mighty, and incorrect with the specific art terms, I really think it was unintentional.   :schierke:

Nah, poor nothing. Just read what people post objectively, he was a pretentious ass and that has nothing to do with his English. The fact he used incorrect terms while claiming to be an eminent art scholar unlike you drudges only further aggravated his insistence at discarding any comment he got as if he was above all, but that's certainly not the reason things went bad (on his own initiative). There's nothing unintentional here, and his vocabulary was good enough to write half-assed flames (unintentional I'm sure :schierke: :schierke: :schierke: :schierke: :schierke: :schierke: :schierke:), so you don't have to try to be compassionate about it because he's a foreigner or whatever the reason may be. Besides he said himself he didn't even care so don't bother yourself with it. Don't worry, I'm sure he'll be laughing at us all the day his work becomes renown as law-defining art. Let me guess: he'll be making Monochromes.

His general point of the value of better mixed and composition-minded colors is correct.

His point was that you need to have one color defining one page, like an overall tint ("when the hole composition is in one gamma it looks much better"). This is what he said and there wasn't much more to it than that. Well mixed and composition-minded colors are a good thing to use when coloring something, as opposed to badly arranged and crude colors. Now that's a very pertinent point but while I don't want to be presumptuous and say you knew it already, it sort of comes off as obvious to me. And since he used wrong examples, wrong vocabulary, wrong methods and insisted on the wrong aspects of his post instead of stressing the generally correct point one could see in his statement... Well you see what I mean. Like CnC said, as long as people are constructive and polite there's no problem, but it wasn't our friend's case here. His loss.

Although, it's nice to know I can just come here and say the word, if I ever need anyone killed!

I'll always try to disprove bullshit whether it's about you, Proj2501, spikeyhairedcadet or anybody else. It's a matter of principles. :SK:

Ok!  Back to the colors!   :guts:

Just a couple of panels to keep the ol' appetites whetted.

While working on that flash, this panel caught my eye, so here's a rare understated, muted color job from Lith.

Hey hey!  Glad to get more posts here. I'm a happy camper.

I like the skin tones.  The blue and red contrast works well.  However I would vary the blood color a bit.  As there are  parts that are drying on his face I would make it darker in places, if not all over.
Just my two cents.  Good work :badbone:

Oh... and 267 is out, yaknow.  :guts:

My head a-splode!  Those look awesome.  The first one is spot on with the coloring.  The only problem I could possibly have is the brightness of the blood on the top of the armor in that panel.  Awesome job on the second one too.  You do blood so well.  The third is also good, but a little faded and not as remarkable.
Title: Re: Lith's colors & tutorials
Post by: Lithrael on March 12, 2006, 11:42:26 PM
Thanks!!  Hm, I see what you mean about the brightness there.  Funny how staring at something too long leaves you failing to notice stuff like that.  The last panel was an experiment, trying for a more watercolorey look.  I like it, but yeah, it's un-vivid.

Berserk blood is fun.  It's like doodling on a notebook, sketching all the blackness into red.  Kind of relaxing!  :troll:

Am I the only one that thinks of 'dude' as a unisex and indeed all-purpose word?  Kinda like 'bitch' in reverse..  Of course I never do catch on when a word (or indeed anything else) becomes unfashionable.  I used to use 'king of' a lot too, after someone threatened to inflict a 'king of pain!!' upon someone else in some fansub, and I fell about laughing.

For the umpteenth time, awesome work.  The upper left hand corner seems to a be a bit speckled with white though.  Makes it look a bit like it's done on canvas.  I love the black line you left around the beast, but it seems a bit thick, at least around the left (the beast's left) ear.  I think the last panel is really the star of the piece, the colors you used for Guts' eye are superb, they fit with the rest of the work but provide some contrast with the blue-ish base highlight.

Thanks guys!!  And thanks for the feedback on this one, I did have the feeling that the top panel didn't achieve the 'oomph' of the last panel, but wasn't sure where else to go with it.  I'll probably be back in a couple days, hat in hand, with some new drafts for critique!

Looking very nice, both this preview and the last.  The blood does look strange, but that's because it's been saved as a .gif.  Any reason behind this?  I'd imagine it'd take up more space.

I'm loving that mst though, and the armor looks fantabulous.

I doubt that, vax.  The blood (atm) has no indication of shading so it pops out.  She's workin' of saiya's bitmap tif so its got to be tricky to color.

You win Lith. You win. Thanks so much for working on this one. I think the scan quality actually works in the image's favor, given the gritty/abstract nature of the subject matter.

Agreed, plus maybe it'll help me break my 'overly clean lines' habit...  though it is making it a little hard to interpret the image, I'm sure others here can help me with that once I get that far.

New work in progress!

Never fear, haven't abandoned the other two I was halfway done with - still working on those.  This one will probably be a while getting done too, I have to hunt up some of our other Kushan colors (to swipe a better looking color scheme) and then see if I can borrow CnC's eye for a critique.  :guts:

BTW, apologies that I haven't got the coppermine gallery back up yet.  The images are all intact & at the same URLs but the browser interface is blarg ded.  Just FYI.

Woo!  Lith's back!   :serpico:

S'lookin' good!  First thing that struck me was how saturated the blue-green hue is on the armor.  I think it hit me 'cause I'm so used to seeing warm tones for the kushan uniform in my head.  However the color choice is cool, and I like the idea (maybe knock the saturation down a tad, since it is night time... up to you).
I realize this is not done but as you go forward in completing this panel keep in mind how close the light must be to their faces.  Narratively, that's what the audience is doing, bringing the light closer to their faces.  The shadows that are indicated in the linework are sharp and this sort of mentality might work a bit better when coloring the armor than the softer, more air-brushy shading.
The vignetting that you're doing works well, and I really like that.  I would probably take it even further and push the figures in the back gradually darker so that the foreground figures pop a bit (added contrast).  A quick way to guage where to take the contrast would be to look at it in black and white:

In this "light" you can see how well the foreground characters are working and where you might want to take the background people.

But beyond that I really like the flesh tones!  I eagerly await for the final product!   ...I also eagerly await that pic of Guts in the smoke (http://www.lithrael.com/berserk/278_06_wip2.jpg) :)

Well, I'm still working on a couple pages, mostly that sick shot of Guts from episode 278.  Here's what I've got so far...

Looking back at the last wip of that one, I think I had a cool-ass color filter on it that I've forgotten about - I'll have to make sure I recreate that.  I'm liking this so far but a lot of it feels kind of flat to me right now.  And holy crap I need a new monitor.  I thought most of it was black till just now.  XD

Hehe, simple but very sweet Lith! :serpico: I guess I would have contrasted the difference between the shadow and the sunlight a little more, though. And maybe made the sky a little paler, like it is in the morning.

And I don't remember seeing a color of that spread of the beach except for the paintover CnC did. I'd love to see you color it.

CnC, feel free to paint all over this in an effort to illustrate sunlight technique.   :daiba:

Hehe.  No need, as you've already got it down!  Looks very nice.  I'm really a fan of the mountains.  Two things that stand out to me, tho.  The sky is _very_ blue for a sunrise.  I think a darker, less saturated blue might work better, but use a photo for reference.  Also the shade of blue for the ground is good for what would be in shadow, but the two sides that aren't covered by Ganishka's shadow would recieve sunlight/cast shadows.  So as much of a pain as it would be, you might want to brighted that up and paint in the shadows of the trees.  It would really sell it, imo.

Oh and while I'm here, has anyone seen colors done for the page from the end of vol. 27, on the beach?  CnC did a gorgeous paintover of the same beach in the morning but I'm looking for the 2-page spread that BiQ colored one panel of...  http://www.lithrael.com/ig/albums/batchuploads/BiQ_smiling_caska.jpeg

Well, regardless if it's been done, I think you should do it  :guts:
That coloring of the beach spread I did years ago.  It's got a ton of mistakes and should someone want to do it again I would have no objection whatsoever.  So I think the same should hold true for the spread you're referring to.  It's always interesting to see other people's thought process in approaching these pages.

Well it looks 10x times better, imo.  If you are going for a sunrise some warmer tones in the sky might help.  Still, it's looking great already.

Very nice, Lith, I love her eyes.  The lighting on her nose looks a little sharp; it almost makes her face look like it's made out of glass, so you may want to soften that up a bit.  When it comes to lighting, as you said, CnC will probably give you better advice than I can. :serpico:

Had to bend my "picture's due" (2800'th post) rule to try and say something about all the cool work the Station is seeing recently.  I'm afraid I'm completely swamped in work and haven't had the time to finish what I was working on.  But hopefully soon, anyways:

Reeeeally cool work, Lith!

CnC will be along shortly to point out how the inks imply a hard shadow and I've made the lighting all soft.   :daiba:

You guys are beginning to read me like a book  :guts:
The skin tones are very nice but yea it's a too soft right now.  Which puts that highlight Rhombaad mentioned into focus.  He's right in that she's have to be wet to give off that kind of sheen, and similar highlights would also be wherever that angle is shared on other parts of her face.
I'd also bring some darker tones to part of the hair, as it kind of looks like it's glowing right now.

I haven't started the helmet yet...  I suck at shiny metal.  :puck:

trick to metallic/shiny objects isn't how they look, but rather what they're reflecting.  Put suggestions of what you'd like around her on the helmet and it'll sell the object as metallic.

I like it.. except that she doesn't have lips.  ???

That's kind of the style Miura has, which he shares with a lot of japanese artists.  Lip shape is implied but not will actually change the hue to indicate lips.  It can look a bit wierd on Miura's stuff when someone attempts a more photo-real rendering since he has a more realistic style.

Thanks for the great feedback CnC, Rhombaad!  Yeah, there are a few things that aren't working yet.  I'm trying to figure out what to do with the line of her nose...  it looks odd to me when I leave it dark, but yeah - if I use it as a hilight it just makes her look slick.

When I try to make the shading harder, it looks strange to me too.  The darker tone ends up looking very unnatural.  I guess I just have to try it a lot more till I get used to it - you know, get the hang of what it ought to look like.

Ramen - I'll try painting her up some lips, too.   :void:
Title: Re: Lith's colors & tutorials
Post by: Ramen4ever on May 05, 2008, 06:26:06 PM
Hmm, for the shading I agree with CnC and Rhombaad. A glossy look just doesn't seem right especially since they're not actually in any light. As shown on page22 (as well as your coloring two pictures back.) Ganishka is completely blocking the sun. Which makes this a hard shot to color, too dark and she'll look like a Kushan.

Coming along nicely, those eyes are simply fantastic.  Now let's see if I can say anything useful.

Metal will indeed reflect the surroundings.  If you look at some pictures of chrome, it's basically a mirror with muted color and increased contrast.  Of course, nobody wears chrome armor, so it's best to dull and simplify to make things more believable and manageable.  Remember though, the colors are still based on the color of the metal and its surroundings.  In shameless reference to the coloration I just did, Gurunberd's armor shading is mostly brown/orange since I assume this is reflecting a dirt road, while I stuck to blue-grey for Locus since his armor always seems to have a bluish tint to it.

I'm guessing the hair is still WIP, so I won't comment.

The skin really is a doozy, I had it easy since apostle faces are so angular.  I'd recommend making some harder edges around the facial features.  I used a hard edged brush in mine, but turned down the opacity and flow to allow for propper blending.  You might want to pick out the bottom of the nose around the nostrils with somewhat harder edges, the ridge should follow on its own.  I also added a lot of color in the shadows, usually blue or green, though this may not help since her features are so much softer.

Also, there's a little trick to punch up the saturation that I've started used (and perhaps abusing) in my stuff, which I'll post later tonight when I finish up that panel.  I'll see if I can test the tips for the nose when I do that as well.

Hey all, still working on Sonia but I thought I'd give a spread from 297 a shot.

Oh, and my webhost is being bollocks again so a lot of my old links are bust for the moment.

Have somma this!

It's wip-ey but crits or ideas for broadly different color schemes are welcome.

My current review would be that it's fucking awesome. :guts: I really love what you did with the clouds. However, I think you should tone down the light on the fields, and probably lessen it in the sky as well. Those dark clouds are pretty much supposed to completely block the sun from view I think. Additionally, maybe changing the golden hue for something more stormy (purple?) would reflect the reality of the situation better.

Its a beautiful job, the clouds are amazing! You can really tell how large and far away Ganishka is. The colors just don't evoke that feeling of utter doom and complete darkness though. If anything it looks like dawn because of the orange. What if you try red like the night sky in Bruce Tim's Batman: TAS. It would certainly give off the apocalyptic feel of the event.

Aw, thanks guys!  You rock!  I'll give a shot at some more color variations for that sky soon.

Oh hey look I'm a co-mod now!   :ganishka:  You guys got any ideas for what I should do with my powers?  My... SCAREY POWERS??

Anyhows as usual still way behind on revising any of my old stuff that needs work, but threw together just a tint color (and un-texting) on one of the Ganishka spreads from episode 297.  If anyone wants to take this and finish it up, or blueline some suggestions for me to do the same, that'd rock ;)

It looks wildly different on different monitors, too, so that's obnoxious.  XD

I like the newer Ganishka one a lot more. This is breathtaking stuff. Ganishka is such an inhuman monster now, I can stretch the image across my widescreen desktop and nothing looks amiss :ganishka:

Regarding the farmer colorization, I think the red glow across the horizon should recede the further away from the blaze it gets. Unless I'm forgetting something about the way light is diffused through clouds.

Yeah..  I'm not real sure what is meant to be going on with the light, is the thing.  The way I initially colored it, I thought the morning sun was providing most of the light, and that was getting diffused through the thick, smoke like clouds that are gathering.  Mostly because the pages of the morning town don't look like it's actually dark.  The lineart gave me the impression the clouds are about the same brightness over the whole horizon.  I'll try it out as firelight fighting with sunlight and see how that looks.   :guts:

By the middle of the episode it looks more like the clouds are stopping almost all of the sunlight, and most of the light is coming from the blaze on the ground.  So that was a lot easier.  I'll try one of the pages with Griff in next, I think.    :void:

Wow, looks awesome, Lith.  I don't see a problem with using that much orange, as Grunberd's illumination would probably drown out some of the nearby colors.  That and all the flames from the burning Chibishkas around them.

The orange tone goes well with fire, so it seems logical to pick it. I guess you could try a redder color for Grunberd himself, but I'm not sure it'd look better than it does right now. Since corundum can be any color depending on the impurities it carries, Grunberd could theorically be any color, but in truth I have a hard time imagining him blue, green or purple.

Great work! Very impressive indeed.

Even though most people seem to have imagined him to be orange, red or something close to that, I always thought he was blueish, kind of icy maybe. I know it really doesn't make sense with fire but that's what I thought. If you do have time to do something other than orange and you don't think my idea is too crazy I would really like to see it.  :guts:

Thanks all!   :guts:  Glad you like the helmet, Grail & Proj!   I've been having a hell of a time figuring out how to do shiny metal, even with the good advice of a couple of the artists here.  I probably ought to go look for a tutorial.  But I'm very glad to hear my shiny metal shading is now leaning more towards not-crap.   :ganishka:

No trouble, Ramen, those bits are only blocked in right now, I'll do them after I shade the rest of her clothes & the horse.  I probly ought to check if any of the trading cards have art of her on this horse so I can get canon colors on him & his tack.   :carcus:

It looks a LOT better than before. I like it, though something about the sword still bugs me but whatever. Maybe it's the grip, I've been staring at it for the last 5 minutes but I can't decide if it looks more like a metal or leather grip. If it's a metal grip then the way you have it now is more or less fine but if it's a leather grip, you could try a one color leather like black or brown, or give her a bit more exquisite sword with a dual pattern, like brown/black, black/white.. etc. I don't know. It might be fine the way it is.

Thanks guys, and thanks Walter, I'm so happy that I'm starting to get the hang of coloring shiny stuff!  I still gotta add some sophistication though, now I notice I've got 2-3 light sources on her helmet but only one on her armor.

Ramen, yeah, I was assuming the grip is metal (it looked like wrapped wire to me) so I just tried to do a hint of a gold tone on the grip, guard and pommel, steel for the rest.  I'll try it as leather later and see if it looks good.  I was assuming leather for the length of the scabbard too though I'm not real sure about that either.

Next up I'm working on Irvine's closeup.  Unless the next episode has something to tear me away from that!   :ganishka:

Yeah, I love how the teeth and eyes came out!  I'm only just now starting to dare to use burn/dodge in photoshop, it makes some nice effects, but it's so easy to use cheaply/badly.  At this point I'm getting into more of photoshop's color manipulation powers, but with most of the tools, I'm wrestling a lot with controlling saturation.  It's fun though when I compare my base colors with how great it looks after I fart around with various settings for half an hour.  I think the next thing I gotta learn is how to just go for broke and use colors in a more naturally mixed way, the way classically trained artists like vee209 do it.

Anyhows, here's the latest and by far greatest draft of page six from episode 278.

Hey great stuff Lith. One thing I noticed is that the end of the dragon slayer looks almost like it doesn't match up with the hilt. Maybe I'm seeing things. Either way it's some great work.

Thanks for the kind words guys  :guts:

the end of the dragon slayer looks almost like it doesn't match up with the hilt.

Yeah, it looks to me like half the end of the DS is hidden behind the close up shot's shoulder, creating the illusion the the sword's perspective is warped.  I'll see if I can fix the color work to discourage that impression.  Also, I just found that badass painting Miura did of Guts riding Zodd a minute or 2 before this shot takes place, so next time I do a draft I'll see if I can't take a few hints from that.  I feel like the shadowed side of the hilt here is too bright but every time I try to fix it it looks like 'augh what did you do?'

More like dark grey, actually. The preview from YA had a bluish tint but that's because they messed up. In the magazine it was grey, and in the volume it's darker still.

Beautifully done! :guts: I wasn't expecting that color choice for Ganishka either, but throwing the orange in there creates an exciting contrast. It would have been pretty easy to over-saturate things in these pages, actually, but I love how you held back on the color just enough to help the little and not-so-little highlights (namely, Griffith) shine through.

Thanks guys!   :serpico:  Ok, I overwrote these guys with a second draft.  Didn't do much, just turned down the blue (after seeing the greyer version of the nishka poster) and cleaned up the screen layer a little.  Looks a lot nicer IMO.  I think Zodd fit better with the blue though; I have to figure out how to adjust his colors.  I so so love how rakshas turned out.  And now I see why everybody loves to color Griffith, you barely do anything and he looks great.   :troll:

Hehehe, don't worry Aaz, I'm trying out new photoshop layouts that let me change the color schemes much more easily without losing quality.  This way I can start out with high contrast overdone colors (so I can really see what I'm doing) and then ramp them back once the first draft is done.

But yeah, this draft is the glow in the dark skull knight action figure.   :badbone:

Do you mean color "harmony"?

I'm not sure personally, I think I see what you mean, but I think there should be a fair amount of contrast since its 3 different textures; fur, bone, and demonhide, and they are being affected by different light sources.

I think as for tying all the images together, for me it would just be that I think Zodd should be casting more of a shadow on the part of Ganishka he is hulking over.

*gasp* Holy Gorsh! PHENOMENAL!!!!!

The dimensional slice, the color choice for the sky, the Beherit sword. All masterfully executed. You took a really challenging 2 page spread and made it look like child's play. Not in terms of just laying down the colors but actually dealing well with the exisisting line work that, IMO, was a real head scratcher in terms of adding color. (I'm sure you're following what I mean)

A big round of applause for you. I'm floored right now.

If we have red sky, it must be red light on all objects in picture. Or sky isn't red? Probably its dark, and white lighting shining Ganishka.
Or it is sword?)) Zodd isnt so ultimate brown, possible color of Femto and Ganishka is the same but Ganishka's darker, because of second plan.

Wow. First off. Keep the Hydras green with teal underbellys, IMO. (Cuz that's the color I was making them!)  :mozgus:
You even handled the grass the EXACT same way I did. This is so awesome to see because it's SO very close to how I was handling it. Great minds lady! ;) I feel like I got into the DeLorean.

The red hydras are fun but, and I hate to say this, the green are more believable.  :ganishka:

This is precisely how I pictured this spread looking if it were to be colored. MUY BUENO!

The 'world' pages are simply perfectly executed.

I'll get you next time Lith...next tiiime.

Wow, the light Hydra colorations are so beautiful that they evoked an "aww" in my head. Given the context of the image, thats an impressive response to be able to get. I like the middle dark one though as far as making the hydra look evil.

New color looks good too. I like the lighter one. I think a pattern of light breaking through leaves would be a good touch if you haven't finished with it.

Yeah, I'm sorry about that.  My webhosts are fucktards and if I don't constantly yell at them my site is usually down.  I'm planning to put everything back up as soon as I can, but I'm kind of poor at the moment so it's been back-burnered till I can deal with it.

And thanks guys for the comments on the elf pic!  I like the idea of adding leafy dappled shade to it, I'll see if I can figure out how.

Love how you did the grass (I guess you made a custom grass brush?) It looks lush and really flows seamlessly, even with the pen-work to show the grass overtop it. Honestly, I wouldn't have figured it would work out. I definitely like the darker versions too (though the lighter version for the children one gives it a pleasant storybook type of vibe to it). You've got some really great stuff here, Lith!  :beast:
Title: Re: Lith's colors & tutorials
Post by: Lithrael on July 27, 2009, 02:52:18 PM
Thanks Spiney!  I feel like the grass needs some work, as others have pointed out, to get the hydra and unicorns' presence to affect it.  It's one of those things that isn't obviously missing but if it's there it makes the work feel more solid and grounded.  It's actually just the default photoshop grass brush, I used it carefully is all, small brush size in the back, with larger and differently colored brushes as you come forward.  It's nowhere near as good as if I painted it properly, but it's a ton better than an untextured grade.   :guts:

And Smith, sure thing, I'll upload the Chained Beast pic as soon as I can find my full res copy, though I'm away from home right now.  Say, does anybody here happen to have it handy on their machine?  Posted!  This imageshack link should take you to all the stuff I've uploaded there:  http://profile.imageshack.us/user/lithrael/images

Looking good, Lith. I like the aqua blue that you're using for the ghost ship creature, so I wouldn't change that too much or at least try to go with similar colors. As for the soldiers, I think red and yellow would look kind of cool mixed in with the silver armor. As for tackling a page from 310, I'd love to see a colored picture of the one I'm using for my avatar (ulterior motive: to replace current scan with colored picture). :guts:

Awesome! Your colors are always very close to what I imagine them to be in my head.  I might add some more specular to the beast; By that I mean extreme highlights, the thing just erupted from the water and it's going to be almost pure white where the water is dripping off. : ) I Love your work.  Keep it up!

Aws.  Sure, I'll add those to my potential colors.   :serpico:

Meantime, Death May Die and a few other colorists have inspired me to finally do a new photoshop tutorial.  Sadly I didn't get too far tonight but to tide anyone over till I can get the rest up, here's a sample photoshop file (in progress) showing how I set up my colors lately.  Right click n download.

http://www.lithrael.com/berserk/312_16_attack_draft.psd (http://www.lithrael.com/berserk/312_16_attack_draft.psd)

It uses groups and clipping layers; most versions of photoshop should support them.

A lot of stuff about this is just sort of halfway slotted in.  Feedback is appreciated but I know about the basic stuff like don't leave Roderick looking like Casca and add like..  shading to stuff, heh

I'm planning on making the firelit side more saturated than the shaded side as well naturally.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone!  I'm still workin on the last one & various WIPs but I decided to revisit some old ones since I am Better At Shit now.  Today I have a Revised Sonia.  I tried this panel out a while ago on a bad day and made her look like a glass barbie or something:

So in despair I put her on the shelf.  But now I have taken her down and dusted her off and got this!

Just for fun today I did a panel from 316.  It's got a lot of text, but it's such promo-image-friendly text!

I didn't hit the moonlight-ey stride I got with the last one of Guts outside but I'm having fun trying to figure out properly moody lighting nonetheless.

That's great! I totally love where this one is going. The only thing that I noticed was that in comparison to the way the other characters are lit, Isma's hair is a bit too bright. Then again, maybe I'm still new to the idea of Isma's hair being that color... I was rooting for redhead!

I'm not an expert, but maybe if you were to ... grayen... up the hair color just a tad?

(...) maybe if you were to ... grayen... up the hair color just a tad?

Desaturate!  Good idea.  I just tried that and it still looks pretty bright so the first draft really must have been too bright.  A lot of the color snuck in cause I used a bright aqua to lighten up her ziptone and then forgot about it!   :farnese:

Anyway, still pretty bright but should be better:

Hehee, yeah...

Thanks guys!  I'll play with it more later.  I need to find better reference sources than google!  Searching for 'moonlight' just gets you four pages of some dick on CBS trying to look sexy.  God damn I hate what Twilight has done to pop culture.  I remember when I didn't give a shit about Buffy.  Sure there was the occasional sighing fangirl to ignore, but the media hardly ever shoved 'shmexy' vampires in my face while I was trying to get on with unrelated things.

Griff:  Hahaha omg.  Should I use the composite you made?  I'll see what I can do.  I'll ask Proj if he has a WIP I can steal - I know he said he tried it once.

While I'm at it I got a request for the spread in 298 of the recently unleashed evil - a mess of monsters with the prawn, Grunny and Zodd at the top and Griff on his horse at the bottom - I feel like I've seen this image in color already though.  Has anyone seen that spread colored or am I imagining things?

Proper name:  Captain Bearded Skeleton, of the good ship Shark Rider, whose bowsprit is home to the figurehead Captain Shark Rider.  I think that's how it goes anyhow.

"Captain Shark Rider" is the name of the ship itself actually. The figurehead is a literal representation of the name, like the Sea Horse's own figurehead.

Curious, about how long did it take you to do something like this with all the shades/etc?

I wasn't keeping track but at least several hours.  It'll commonly take 6 hours to do a not-too-complicated image.  For me a lot of that time is used up experimenting though; for good or bad I spend a lot of time trying out different techniques instead of refining what I've tried before.  That most recent tutorial is still how I'm doing the basic setup, though.  It's a lot easier than what I used to do way back when I started.

I love the green effect you used for coming through the barrier!

I googled the rectangular pupils that goats and octopus have because I was so curious about them.  Apparently it allows the creature to absorb more light in the dark and see in a wider spectrum, like a wide angle lens.  It's really creepy, but it works great on these guys. :guts:

why would goats need eyes like that? i get octopuses.. but for goats it just seems unnecessary. maybe they are distant relatives.

No, goats and octopuses aren't distant relatives. Their horizontally-slitted eyes apparently give them a better peripheral depth perception, and probably help them see better at night too.

Though I wonder what it would look like with more variety on the colors. Then again, since this is her REVEAL, it makes sense, since she's just freshly transformed. Plus, they're under water.

Title: Re: Lith's colors & tutorials
Post by: CCS on July 13, 2011, 03:17:42 AM
Cool, though your work would probably really benefit from painting in the core shadows and varying between hard and soft shadow edges. Right now your shadows are sort of in between. Isidro's arm in particular would really benefit from a hard shadow with a core shadow running along the place that is farthest away from the light source.
It's also good to keep in mind that colors get warmer right next to an area of shadow. That can help your colorings look a lot more lifelike. Probably not applicable to the underwater scene but for other colorings it helps.

That's true.  It's hard to make myself do it just cause I'm not used to it.  Thanks for the advice!
Added some color to the last one.  Now it's Isma's hair that's looking underloved.  I'll see what I can do about that, next.

Very eerie looking. The original detail lines compliment the colors a lot. Though, the lines you added on the tentacles look a little bit rough. Maybe if they were blended in a bit or used a thinner brush?

Man it's been a while!  I've been puttering a little bit.  Right now I'm working on a few colors inspired by the TCG.  I've got Grunbeld almost finished, but just since I haven't posted anything in yonks, here, have this Lisa Frank abomination that is Amethyst Grunbeld  :troll:

(http://www.lithrael.com/ig/albums/berserk_lith/normal_lisafrankgrunbeld.jpg) (http://www.lithrael.com/ig/albums/berserk_lith/lisafrankgrunbeld.jpg)

Oh, and I remember someone figured out exactly what flower Chich is, but I can't seem to find the post now - does anyone remember or have a link?

Only a true badass can pull off Trapper Keeper Lisa Frank's Hot Pink.  :daiba:

As for the flower, Aaz correctly identified it after Volume 37 spelled it out in the liner notes: http://www.skullknight.net/forum/index.php?topic=13547.msg220631#msg220631

"And it turns out it's a "Shepherd's purse" (薺), the formal name of which is Capsella bursa-pastoris. "

Anyway, it's always great to see new work from you!

ONE YEAR LATER!!!   Thanks you guys.  <3

OK, my gallery died again a little while ago when the raid array it was on violently exploded, but I've just got it mostly working again (lithrael.com/ig) AND uploaded a couple new colors!

First I revised an old color of Grunbeld's group of great big apostles stomping on burnt Ganishka gore flower monsters:

(http://www.lithrael.com/ig/albums/berserk_lith/normal_grunbeldparty.jpg) (http://www.lithrael.com/ig/albums/berserk_lith/grunbeldparty.jpg)

And here's a new one, the Merrows rescuing Guts.  I ended up with two versions and I can't seem to decide which I like better.

Love the colors for Grunbeld's group, Miura's attention to detail is fantastic. I like the right merrow colors because it's warmer/ less crisp looking ... maybe accounting for sea water around the Sea God not being as clear.

Post by: Walter on October 08, 2014, 02:38:58 PM
Wow! That Grunbeld piece is striking. The color tone is what does it. You picked the darkest, most fiery colors across that full spectrum.

Similar to Aaz, I don't have a preference on the merrow coloring. There are aspects I like of each iteration. The darker the better though, I think. Given the light source in that scene.

Post by: Lithrael on October 08, 2014, 04:02:32 PM
Thanks guys!  Yeah, I had a lot of fun digging back into Grunbeld.  It's a really dense scene and I was so happy when it started looking like I imagined it sounding.  The glowing embers really made it pop.

You guys are right about the darker one being in better continuity with the story and tone.  I think I like the lighter one better on its own, but it's more sort of the Weeki Wachee Springs version.

Great job    Lithrael , the Grunbeld and Co. coloring is already my wallpaper. :)
I really like how the fire stirs up ! The shading is perfect !

As for the Mermaid one , the darker version is in my opinion more fitting for the scene.

Lith, you gotta rename this thread "McDonalds," cause I'm loving it. :carcus: I actually hadn't thought much about the merrows' possible hair colors or how their bodies transitions from one half to the other. I like your approach in both cases!

I´ve now checked every single coloring you´ve done and I am astonished by your shading skills.  :isidro:

If you consider coloring a Berserk page again , I would absolutely love to see your take on the Apostle Fight from Pandaemonium.

I think it is one of my favorite panels because it shows how terrified Rickert is of Apostles (wich I kinda missed the first time he saw one) , and since he wasnt attending the Eclipse , he got a pretty good glimpse of what could have happened.

It could be great but from a legal point of view I don't think that's possible.

Thanks guys!   :serpico:  Nothing was particularly hard, I just took absolutely forever cause of how i wanted to treat the grass lineart/shading and it didn't really turn out how I meant anyway but still it worked out overall.  Also I decided to put a little hilite in literally all of the lil spirals but that was more meditative than hard as such!  Tried a different technique on the party as well, a blue/white tone layer for the whole group with a flat color adjustment thrown on top.  Then last of all an instagram style filter to bring it together and to mask how simple the color treatment was in general.  Cleaning up the halftone to fill the dialog bubble and the page seam took forever cause I want things to be unnecessarily perfect.

Patreon colors would be fun but yes legally unsound.  There are a few manga-coloring patreons out there, which seem to work on the basis of, "I am coloring this for you, the client, what you do with it after that is your business."  I'm not really sure for myself, I mean, just more splash panels like I do would probably not bother me, they're not really any more infringey than the unliscenced casts/art that go around, but "whole chapters" would necessarily mean illegally distributing the manga.

That's a shame, because of all the attempts I've seen at coloring Berserk, you're stuff is top notch. I would love to see all of Berserk interpreted with your color pallet. But the legal issues certainly are there, and getting paid for it makes it especially visible. I doubt there's a way to make it a non-infringement issue.  Not unless Hakusensha wants to hire you on.

Those aren't tombstones.

I wish people would stop trying to get this done. Beyond the fact it's illegal, Berserk is being drawn in black and white, not in color. That fact impacts all of the artwork from its inception, meaning that it's how it's meant to be read.

I'm not especially for (or against) coloring and I understand your perspective, but I always thought mangas were in black and white because of the release schedule being tight, don't you think that if Miura could color it he would do it? (just a mere question, in black and white it suits me fine)

DAT GRASS ! This is great, dude. Really enhances the scene. Gives a good impression of the sheer scope and magnitude that arriving to this point on the Skellig has. Also it really makes you appreciate the diversity and size that Guts' group has grown to. I mean we see them all the time and we know them all so well but these group shots, especially highlighted by the colors and textures here are just so flat out cool and wonderful. They really are a great group of colorful and well drawn characters. I can always stop and appreciate that.

If I had never heard of Berserk and had no knowledge of it's existence and I saw just this shot, I'd immediately be interested and want to know more. That's pretty much Miura's genius, where every page, every panel evokes that.

Oburi: yaaaas omg yes his splash panels are so enthralling and enticing and epic, aaahhh

Ahhh thanks for the kind words you guys.   :guts:  Yeah I'm not 100% settled on how bright the grass is, but I have to figure out how to bring it down without making it too dull in comparison to the bright sky which I really like.  I might have a remix later.

I always thought mangas were in black and white because of the release schedule being tight, don't you think that if Miura could color it he would do it?

That's not exactly what he means.  Most published black and white manga itself is composed for and meant to be in black and white.  Any art Miura intends to be in color will have different techniques, rules of composition etc, from all the way back in the sketch phase that work intended to be in black and white.  Coloring any black & white manga by a good artist who did not intend to leave some of the visual work to a colorist, is more for fun and to see what you can do than ever an improvement on it.

For a counter-example, you can really do great stuff with black and white Mœbius art because most of it was composed with the idea in mind of maybe going back and doing watercolors later.

One of many things I do love about this color is how you can better make out all of the creatures drawn for this single spread. It's a little overwhelming (in a good way) in black and white, but seeing it all in color is just great. I have the feeling that a lot of people, including myself, might be changing their wallpapers!
