Title: Favorite two-page spreads
Post by: Peregrine_Falcon on December 18, 2007, 10:47:36 PM
Kentarou Miura does some fantastic artwork and his artistic talent really shines in his two page spreads.

This one is the most memorable for me. It's creative. I never thought an artist could capture a man's shock so great that it hides him from overwhelming guilt so well in a single, textless drawing.

What are your favorite two page spreads?

This is a really hard choice, there's so much to pick from.

Scanlations...

The nice thing about two page spreads is that the artist has more control of the message, not some nerd who thinks Guts should say "Pretty please with sugar on top".

Anyway, I think it's fine to use scanlations to find the images if you buy official Berserk volumes and disregard the groovy dialogue.

No. The least you can do in that case is to remove the text. And then again I also recommend to remove it if you're using scans in Japanese. The purpose is to illustrate a post, not just to post scans.

Anyway, I'll have to think about what's my favorite, but honestly I like so many of them that I don't think I can choose.

I don't have it but I like the one where the we see the Kushan army invading midland right after the king dies. Its so epic and massive. MAybe someone will be kind enough and post that one for me. I don't have the books with me but I believe its 17 or 18.

i can't choose a favorite...  there are too much superb 2-page-spreads in berserk.

10-4, thanks. It's not my favorite theres so many, but it's deff a cool spread. I like it mostly because of where it is.  Theres really no hint as to any Kushan army invading Midland prior to this, I don't think. The king dies in a very delirious dreamlike state and then you turn the page and you see that massive army marching in. I know it caught my attention the first time. I thought, "o wow the haradrim from the LOTR are invading midland now." Miura was definitely "inspired" by LOTR! :guts:
Kidding of course

Im not sure about FAVORITE, but this picture was posted across the internet in every Berserk fansite soon after it was published, back in the day. So, I figure people like it.

I can't recall ever seeing a two-page spread in Berserk and not saying "Wow. . . ." to myself, sometimes even out-loud.
I've always been partial to this one; it's the epic scale, subversive theme and context of the subject matter that I like.

Much like CnC there is absolutely no way in which I could possibly choose a favorite. They're all awesome. However, for the sake of the thread, here are a few that are not too likely to be posted by someone else:

Everyone's favorite! Trolls!

First person view, pretty unique. And with trolls!

More troll awesomeness. Man, these trolls are just too cool!

Ganishka ain't fucking around.

sorry I couldn't do it justice by making it bigger.

I like this one because it captures some of Berserk's core themes. If I saw this picture on someones wall without any any knowledge of berserk I would immediately become interested and want to know the whole backstory behind the art....  On second thought, that can be said for all the spreads.  I guess I just really like it.

It's a great image, but it's not really a 2-page spread, hehe. :beast:

I've always loved this two-page spread. The style reminds me of Zdzislaw Beksinski's art. I honestly cannot imagine the effort and time Kentaro Miura puts into his two-page spreads.

I second that, what a beautiful spread that is. Very emotional, it is without a doubt my favorite.

I attempted to color that panel when it was first released way back when.  As I recall I never really got anywhere with it.  Maybe someday I'll give it another go :/

Beksinski fan too?

A lot of moments during the eclipse and the tower were very Beksinski-esque. Kentaro's drawings really are beautiful. <3

My fav?

The whole manga itself, its just one big 2 page spread full of violence, sex and win. And I love every bit of it.

Yea exactly. You can't pick a fav, it just can't be done.  It has a lot of good art all around which also visable changes as the time goes on - getting better. But that happens with everything and also allows one to see how the artist is improving and changing things but thats another story

My fave would have to be the spread depicting Guts' surprise attack on Roshinu.
Mainly because it shows how desperate and unmerciful Guts is when it comes to apostles - even children like Roshinu. I mean, come on, he's on fire for god's sake! xP

Nor sure if I should say sorry for resurrecting an ancient topic but I just can't help myself.  :griffnotevil:

I absolutely love the Conviction Arc, my (at the moment) favorite arc of Berserk with some breathtaking art. This before and after shot in particular.

(https://i.imgur.com/N9mGGqz.png)   (https://i.imgur.com/ZPeT01X.png)

Some more incredible art from the Conviction Arc, the latter has been posted before but I think this one is a bit neater.

(https://i.imgur.com/lDySE9o.png)   (https://i.imgur.com/zqmxvxd.jpg)

To contrast to the first two images I want some horrible shit as well, which is just as much Berserk as moments of serene beauty. The artistic design that's on highlight here.. The spacial construction and flow of the images are just wonderful!  :ubik:

(https://i.imgur.com/C0pj2UJ.png)   (https://i.imgur.com/nhr6e5c.png)

And even more pieces to showcase Miura's absolute mastery of the medium. I wouldn't call this first one minimalist in any other context then that of Berserk, but I kind of have to lol. And the second spread.. oh my god.. My hands hurt from just seeing that.  :isidro:

(https://i.imgur.com/LlVH5rz.jpg)   (https://i.imgur.com/bAZiF92.png)

The juxtaposition of the beauty of Miura's depictions of Griffith's panels and the undertones in context of the series makes for some of the best art pieces in Berserk, but we always gotta remember...  :femto:

(https://i.imgur.com/Xx8Rs6B.png)   (https://i.imgur.com/Bv1OwJu.png)

This was just a few ones that I happen to like in particular for the moment, however every time I re-read the manga, or re-watch the -97's anime (happy 20th anniversary, just 1 day late  :slan: ) I always fall in love with individual panels in every volume. Can't we just post the entire manga here? Illegal? Ahh, yeah... nvm.

Hope you enjoy and start sharing panels again! It has been a few years.  :daiba:

Well of course there is one awesome new spread that got out this year and I think a lot of you guys will agree with that one. The spread of the reunion (Guts/Casca Under the tree) in Elfhelm. Cannot post it because I'm at work but it should be fresh in every reader's mind!  :guts:

I've always liked this one

Not one of the most detailed or breathtaking Miura has done, but it gives me a feeling of old school badassery (I especially like the decapitated dog head hanging on to Guts' prosthetic)
