Quote from: ORIGINAL POST / BACKGROUND INFO
Ok, fellow Berserk fans!  Some may have recalled I hinted at a cool new collectible/project a few weeks back... Well!  I am here now to tell you all about it, and you're gonna dig it! :guts:

A few months ago I met someone who builds replicas of various props from TV shows, namely the Sci-Fi show, Battlestar Galactica (any fans on the boards???).  For those that don't know, BSG is one KICK-ASS show and easily my favorite tv drama ever.  I highly recommend it to everyone, even if you don't like sci-fi stuff (it doesn't even feel like a sci-fi show anyways).

But back to that someone... his name is James Perkins and he had sculpted several 1:1 scale replicas of the various helmets from BSG.  They. Are. Amazing.  This guy is one talented sculptor, and not only that, he molds/casts and paints as well.  Truly a rare find!  I recently received his last cylon centurion replica and was BLOWN AWAY.  Here are some pics of what it looks like, and also a video I filmed of it last night.

Where am I going with this???  Well, naturally, A BERSERKER HELMET REPLICA!!!  I discussed a commission with him and he is beyond ecstatic to work on it!  He even went out on his own accord and got a hold of the DVDs and manga, and has already dove in the story.  In fact, he is a new fan. :serpico:

In regards to the design, well there are 2 types of Berserker helmets in my mind.  The realistic one (like the one on cover 31 (http://www.berserkstatues.com/skdotnet/helmets/berserkerrealref.jpg)), and the pumped up crazy one.  Hehe.  I'm more inclined to go for the latter, because it's more what we are used to seeing, I really like the Z-shaped glowing red eyes, and I just feel like it's more interesting to look at.  What do you all think?

As far as reference photos go, if anyone has any GOOD ones they can lead me to, that'll be awesome.  For now, since it'll be very useful for James to have a 3D model to use as a reference, I will be mailing him the 1/8 Berserker kit by Headlong.  For those that don't know, this is what it looks like:

Painted up shots HERE (http://berserk.xxxxxxxx.jp/work%20kyousennsi11.html)

To me, this looks like the most accurate helmet, so I think it'll be best to use this as the reference.  Again, if anyone else has suggestions, please share them with us.

He is ready to start sculpting the helmet at anytime, but of course, it's only worth it if there are other people who are interested.  He can make anywhere from 20-30 per mold (and he says not to worry about loss of detail in the later casts).  The final product will be made of high quality fiberglass (better than resin of course), and be 1:1 scale.  For this particular helmet, he can also customize the eyes to glow red!  As you can see from the centurion replica video (http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=KjSZSXVX9Hw), he has experience with lighting as well.  Can you just imagine how AWESOME this will be?!?!

Moreover, he will assemble the replica and paint it all himself!!!  According to him, if we get between 10-15 orders, he can finish assembling/painting all of them within 6-8 weeks AFTER the mold is done.

So of course, the question you guys are probably wondering is HOW MUCH?  If we get 15 people to go in on this, then it'll be roughly $475 each.  If we get even more than 15, then the price will go down.  But seriuosly... $475, my friends?  That is an amazing price for a custom sculpted life-size Berserk replica, fully painted and all!

He's not asking for any down payments, but if he's going to start sculpting, he'll need to know the general interest of the community.  I told him I'm sure that there are several collectors here that would be interested, so don't make me out to be a liar! =P

Lastly, I have a feeling this is going to turn out to be SWEEEEET.  Meaning, after this one is done, we can move on to a Griffith/Femto helmet replica, or maybe even a Skullknight replica.  Can you imagine the awesomenessssss???!

So, who's in?!

I would be interested but the price is keeping me at bay. If he did an awesome job and it was a must have I could pay maybe $250. I am interested to see the final product though and I hope others are and we can get this ball rolling.

Times like this really make me wish I had more money, though I think I'd prefer the old helmet from the Golden Age... but I'd pay for either if I could find the money. Here's hoping ~30 people are interested.  :puck:

Hey Deci, I'm a fan of Guts old helmet too!  Who's to say we won't get to that one down the line also? :guts:

I'm quite confident he will do an awesome job, but $250 is probably not going to happen unfortunately.  I'm glad to hear you are interested, though!  Maybe you'll change your mind when the final sculpt is unveiled!  Hehe. :beast:

I was hoping for the original Hawks-helmets in which case I'd join in for the Guts and Casca ones ..
As for the berserker, I'll pass... ^^

It's a great idea, but the price's a tad high for me right now, regardless of the fact it's pretty cheap for that kind of work. It'd be a different story if it were SK's helmet. :SK:

Does he only make helmets ?
Because I'm very interested in the idea of making a custom item of Berserk and I don't really mind how much it's gonna cost.
But I would prefer if we could do a whole statue instead of just a helmet.

Oh, WHY DO I HAVE TO BE A FULL-TIME STUDENT!? :judo:

As you can clearly see by the above response, I'm interested...I just don't have the cash right now.  Personally, I'd prefer the Berserker helmet featured on the cover of vol. 31, rather than the "full-blown" Berserker helmet.   I can't wait to see the finished product! :guts:

I'm interested, although I would like to see how the bottom jaw part will be done, as this is attached to the chest part of the armour. Seems like it may have to be more of a bust than just a helmet?

Guts original Hawks helmet would be a definite must have, also Skully would be cool as has been mentioned.

I'm interested but not putting my foot entirely through the door just yet. I'd like to see a 1st production before I'm full in. Not trying to say I don't trust his artistic abilities cause that Battlestar galactica helmet was pretty sweet!

Awww Joa!  I thought you and Cat would be a shoe-in. =P  Hehe, okay, well it does seem like a lot of people would want an OG Guts helmet.  I'll definitely keep that in mind for a future project.  That, and a SK (ahem, Aaz, Maiku, Grovel)  Hehehe.

Does he only make helmets ?
Because I'm very interested in the idea of making a custom item of Berserk and I don't really mind how much it's gonna cost.
But I would prefer if we could do a whole statue instead of just a helmet.

He's actually mentioned that one day he wants to build a full size statue of entire Battlestar Galactica Cylon Centurion, but that's more like a labor of love for him (he's a big BSG fan like myself).  I don't think commissioning him to make a full size Berserk statue is really plausible right now, especially when that would cost several thousands of dollars to buy.  What exactly did you have in mind?

Oh, WHY DO I HAVE TO BE A FULL-TIME STUDENT!? :judo:

Well start saving! =)  Hehe.  Or do I what I did in college... eat lots of ramen.  J/K  Yeah, I can't wait to see the finished product either.  Actually, he is going to start sculpting soon, and I think we are going to go with the "full blown" helmet instead.  Sorry about that!!!  The few people I've talked to seem to be more interested in that version than the regular version.  I hope you still decide to partake down the road.  It's gonna be sweeeeet!

I'm interested, although I would like to see how the bottom jaw part will be done, as this is attached to the chest part of the armour. Seems like it may have to be more of a bust than just a helmet?

Glad to hear you are interested, man. =)  That's a good point too.  I will talk that over with James.

WOOOOT =).  Right on!

I'm interested but not putting my foot entirely through the door just yet. I'd like to see a 1st production before I'm full in. Not trying to say I don't trust his artistic abilities cause that Battlestar galactica helmet was pretty sweet!

Cool, man.  James said he's going to start sculpting now and doesn't expect people to be completely on board until they see how the sculpt turns out.  So no worries about not putting your foot in completely.  I'm glad that you are interested though, and we will definitely show you all in-progress pictures and so forth to keep everyone in the loop!

Like the others here, I wish I could see a first shot of the item before jumping totally in the project. Well his work is impressive and I guess he can do a great work. Whatever, the price sounds a little bit hight. I think 400$ could be great. :miura:

Wattup all!  Here are the first work-in-progress shots from James.  Keep in mind, these are VERY EARLY pics.  This is just the foundation.  Also, please make a note of these few things (this is taken from an email he sent me):

Quote
1.  The foam head cast I'm using as an armiture should be higher up and pushed forward slightly.  I'm just using it to hold the clay and get a general reference of a relationship between the helmet and the subject.  The fact that it is off a little doesn't effect the sculpt.

2.  You can probably see some of the armiture for the bottom piece poking through with some blobs of clay on the face.  Try to ignore that while looking at it--I'm just using it to help hold the shape in place.  It will be gone when I'm finished.

3.  The top and bottom are spaced apart more than the kit so that I can seperate them for molding.

4.  Some of the things I see right away after looking at the pictures is that there is alot of mass that still needs to be removed.  Also, after shortening the front as we discussed, I need to cut in to the "V" neck portion more.  I am going to do the breastplate at the end, when I'm done with the main sculpt.

Woah, that is looking great thus-far!

One thing I'd like that I haven't seen anyone mention is the helmet Griffith wore in the golden age, I've just always liked something about that helmet, that and of course Guts golden age helmet as well. ^_^

I'm impressed.

Input: more definition to the undercuts of the scales is a must. Remember, it's an armoured suit with movable parts. Though it will be a static sculpt, the thing has to be believable. I understand that this will be done later on, but I just wanted to point it out.
Also, IMO the nose tip should be more defined and not so pointy.

Gee ... I might have to rethink my involvement in this .... :carcus:

Wow, it does look very nice.  Like others, I would like to see later progress but you can count me in as someone who's interested.  Have the glowing eyes been finalize yet?  And what do people prefer, a clean bust or a bloody version? Or can he individually do this per people's interest? For me anyways, blood is always involved when Guts have roid rage!  Lastly, does he have a rough estimate of the size dimension?  Thanks.

Hey Joa, just so you know I did forward your input over to James when you first wrote it.  He took note of them and actually, his idea in the very beginning was to have the helmet semi-movable but I believe he's foregoing this idea because it would raise the price of the finished product.  As far as the pointiness, it seems that it really varies when looking at the manga.  Every picture it's a bit different and I guess it depends on how intense Guts' state is.  He did notice that the Headlong kit is VERY pointy so he made sure to tone it down a bit from that.

Wow, it does look very nice.  Like others, I would like to see later progress but you can count me in as someone who's interested.  Have the glowing eyes been finalize yet?  And what do people prefer, a clean bust or a bloody version? There will definitely be glowing eyes, but he has not started working on them yet.  I will ask him about the bloody vs clean, but I think generally they will be clean.  More detailing will take him more time especially if he's going to be making 15 or so.  We'll definitely talk about it, though.  In terms of size dimension, it's hard to say right now.  He's going to work on the breastplate/mounting next so we can get a better idea then.  As of now, using the pencils/paper near the helmet as reference in the picture, the helmet looks certainly full size, and bigger than my head anyways.  I'm pretty sure that shoulder/bust that he is using to hold up the helmet is life size.

Anyhow, GLAD to see there are more people on board!  REMEMBER, the more people the cheaper for all of us!!!  But without further delay, here are some new pictures and progress:

Quote
Here are the next set of progress pictures.  Getting closer to finishing.  I still have some smoothing out to do, some detailing (i.e. round bolt heads on each side of a row of scales), and while I'm detailing and texturing it will bring the whole sculpt in a little tighter.  I will also start on the breast plate and mounting base.  This may be the last time you'll see this sculpt as a whole for I need to seperate it and cut off the ear horns to be able to reach some areas--also for ease of molding.

About the texture--I know I can achieve the same texture of THIS (http://www.berserkstatues.com/kits/friendskits/skink/gutsberserker/finals/gutsberserker5.jpg) by spattering gel coat out of a spray gun with fine and large blobs that harden, then I can sand them flat leaving an irregular  cast iron surface like the sample I sent.  I can do this over the clay and it will be incorporated in the mold.

In regards to the movable parts, James has been reading this thread and he mentioned that he actually hasn't fully done away with the idea.  He'll think it over and some and see if he can engineer it in a fashion where the price won't get bumped up.  We'll keep you posted!

Hi Derek,
Since you said its not a binding agreement, put me in the "Yes" cat.  I'm not worried about the outcome or details since I have other SKers, cough, cough, you, Joa, etc., watching over or giving expertise advice on the process!  Guess, my only hiccup is the total cost but shouldn't be too bad for me since he's in the States.

Thanks for all your effort and work on such an amazing project, Derek and James.

That helmet looks awesome!! That guy has great modeling skills. Just a few questions though, will it be wearable, or does he plan on making guts face for the inside? Oh, and can you please give an update every now and then of what the approx. price might be with the amount of people that have said yes? I was just curious, don't know if i can actually buy it though! XD

Small update regarding the breast plate and the base:

Quote
The brand is on the back right of the base.  It is placed so the viewer can see it from the front at the same time as seeing the plaque that we'll put on the front.  There is a 3/4 inch bevel all around the base so it is a 3D trapazoid.  I can mount the plaque on the front face of the base.  I will have a rod mounted straight up from the top middle of the base and I'll have a receiver for the rod going in from the bottom of the breast plate up into the jaw piece for easy removal and assembly to base.  That means there will be two power supplies--one for the "Z's" on the helmet and one for the base.

And for those that are wondering why there are two power supplies, the brand will be glowing/pulsating red too.  Can you say DOPENESS!!!!??

Here are some pics

Hey virulent!  Welcome to the forums =).  The helmet was not intended to be wearable, but I know James might customize his own to make it so.  Reason is James will need specific measurements from each head, and it is a lot of extra work to make it fit.  If it's something that you really want for cosplay or what not, PM me and I will talk to James about it.  You can be sure though the cost of making it wearable will increase though.  As far as costs go, I'll try to give another price estimate soon.  I'll talk it over with James.

On a side note, James just finished watching the entire anime.  What a true professional, that he would even watch all 25 eps of the show just so he can learn more about the story!  Granted, the helmet doesn't even show up in the anime, but nevertheless, it's still REALLY cool.  He's going to pick up the manga now, and start reading!

Add me to the Yes list. I wouldn't miss it......

A welcome to you too, Nirvana =).  Sure, I will add you to the list.

Since you said James watched the anime and will start the manga I was thinking.... could you please ask him if he's willing to trade one of the helmets for my full scale Dragonslayer? lol that would be awesome, tell him I'll even ship it for free! Haha, he'd probably just say no, but it couldn't hurt to find out! :serpico:

IMPORTANT UPDATE!!!

Okay, folks.  James is steadily making his way to the end.  Given all the time and work he is put thus far, and all the costs of materials that are just around the corner, he is asking for people to start making deposits.   Basically it's going to work like this:

- Right now, with 11 "yes", and 7 "maybes", and a whole bunch of people who seem interested, it looks like we will hit the 15 mark for sure.  If so, the price will be $450 + shipping (should be around $20 for people in the US).  If we hit the 20 mark, then there will be a price reduction, and if we hit 25, then there will be another one.  So hopefully any people on the fence will jump over it to our side real soon!
- As far as the deposit is concerned, it'll be $250 via paypal.  Personal-message me when you are ready to pay, and I will give you his paypal address.
- FIRST COME FIRST SERVE.  Meaning, those that put down their deposit sooner, will get their helmet earlier.  James will be making them in batches (it will streamline the painting process for him), but of course he is not a machine (or cylon, muh haa haha), so some people will receive their helmets before others.  If you want yours to be within the few first batches, put your deposit down now!
- ALL DEPOSITS ARE FULLY REFUNDABLE.  If you put down a deposit, don't worry, you can still change your mind and back out.

As far as progress goes [From James]:

Quote
Here is the next set of update shots.  Let the molding begin!!  You'll notice that the sculpt is now black.  I sprayed the gel coat on it for the texture.  Unfortunately, I wasn't able to sand it because the gel coat would flake off the clay too easy so I will have to sand each piece after I pull them from the mold which is O.K.--I was going to have to sand them anyway for maximum paint adhesion.  The texture is going to look great, it already has that rustic cast iron look to it, just a little soft till I sand the prop after each is made.

You'll also notice the clay walls and keys I made for the silicone.  I don't know if you've ever seen a mold in progress, but this is how it begins.

Also, if you can let the viewers know to ignore the big drips and blobs of gel coat because they will be sanded flat and look as part of the texture and not so noticeable.  I've done this technique before and the end result looks great.

Same here, just sent you a PM.

Truly amazing and for the people still on the fence, come on!  Especially for the people in the US, internationally I can understand.  Regardless, this is a custom built full-size Berserk bust with the bells and whistles, lighted red eyes and such!  This is possibly, a once in a lifetime chance here.  I shouldn't even buy anything but just couldn't resist.  Don't wanna regret the missed opportunity.  Once its over, its OVER!  This isn't his job but his hobby and he's only doing this because of Derek.  :guts:

Of course, I'm cheerleading, if I can get it cheaper, why not?!  :ganishka:  Still, I can live w/ $450 and still consider it a good deal for an "EXCLUSIVE" item.

Hehe, now that's the spirit I like to see! :serpico:

Alright folks.  HERE ARE SOME NEW PICTURES.  From James:

Quote
Here are the first two helmets out of the mold.  One is black because the gelcoat I used was black and the other is gray because I was running low on black and mixed white gel cote to extended it out (irrelevent--I could of used hot pink if I wanted).  The "Z" shapes and the sacrifice brand was cast with clear gel cote with red catalyst for a good tint.  It will look sweet with the red lights behind it.  I still have alot of clean-up to do on these pieces (i.e. seam work, air voids, and sanding to reveal the proper texture.)  More pics to come soon.

Oh yeah, and the clear with red in it has been cast much further than it needs to.  I'll be able to paint over and behind to tighten the shapes better and keep the clear only where it needs to be.

ALSO, James has only received a few deposits from people, and thus he doesn't have much funding to put towards all the materials that goes into each helmet.  It would be REALLY useful if those that are interested in the helmet to put down your deposit ASAP.  Please act soon!  How can you resist anyways!? =)

Yo yo!

Quick update!  Here is the first look at the assembly of the helmet.  Right now, they are just propped up to show what it will roughly look like when assembled.  James would like to use clear acrylic for the support, but if isn't strong enough, he'll have to maybe use the threaded rod and paint it the same color as the armor to make it less noticeable.

From James:
Quote
I figured I'd take these VERY early pics because nobody has seen it all put together yet.  I still haven't dealt with the texture yet.  I'm spending much of my time producing all the parts out of the molds from how many orders I have.  Note I brushed on some light gray primer around the "Z" shape and brand to tighten up the shapes a little.

Hi all!  James will be starting to paint the first batch (4 of them) next week!!  He asked me if he should paint blood on it, and I thought I'd ask what you think first.  Especially for the ones that have put a deposit down already, what do you prefer?

Me personally, as much as I love blood on anything Guts related, I am kinda opting to a no-blood helmet...

Speak up folks!

Why am I just seeing this now?! I guess after my last Berserk statue purchases I quenched my thirst... but after seeing this... I'm... I'm thirsty again!

I want! DK, I'll PM you. Put me down for one.

Though I'm not sure if I want bloody or non-bloody. I'm leaning towards bloody but I would like to see them both if possible - I know I'll be late in line so I think I'll pictures will come up before I have to finalize my answer.

Forgot what # I am but can't decide on either?! Yeah, yeah, I'm the one that brought up the bloody idea but now can't decide.  :ganishka: Like DirectDK said, blood is usually cool. But IMHO, this item is only a bust and static-looking so wouldn't warrant any blood. Huh, would be nice to see both.

For now, I pick no blood. Another thing I can't wait to see are those lighted red eyes!  :isidro:

Painting pictures coming soon!  James got set back a few days because of the rain (he works outside).  But, here are some updated shots of one of the helmets primed and coated!

Quote
Here is the first couple of steps in the painting process.  The first couple of pics are the primed pictures (sorry about the shadows--frakkin trees).  The next four are the helmet base coated a metalic color.  It's just the base coat--there will be other steps (washes, sponge application of colors, and dry brushing)  Those are the steps I'll do tomorrow.  The last pic is a close up of the texture.  It will look even better when it is finished.

You'll notice it looks like I painted over the eye and brand windows--no worries--I applied a few thick layers of liquid latex.  When I'm done I'll cut along the edges and peel off the latex revealing the clear window.

Haha, "frakkin".  I miss my BSG =(.  Anyhow, onwards to the pictures! :carcus:

Hey Genome.  Sorry to hear that.  Could you be a bit more specific?  Are you talking about the shape of the brand, or the speed of the pulsating?  What exactly?

Okay, some quick important things!

1. About availability: When #30 is ordered, it's done.  We're only at #9 right now, so there is still time.  It takes James about 6-8 weeks after an order is placed to complete one (if you order now), so for those that are interested and can afford the $250 deposit, you have 6-8 weeks to save up in that time frame for the rest.

2. FINAL PRICE is $450 + $25 shipping.  If you ask me, that is one HELL OF A DEAL.  For a custom job like this, that is just crazy...

3. SHIPPING STARTS THE END OF NEXT WEEK!!!  So, the first 3 buyers: bruhaha69, Nirvana, and cucu4coco, please pay your remaining balance to James.

4. The nameplate will be in KATAKANA (you can thank Aaz for this idea).  For this helmet, it will say "Berserk, Guts" in katakana.  I'm looking into places online right now that can do this, so it's POSSIBLE that the price may raise $10 or so dollars if the nameplates tend to be more pricey.

5. Pictures of the EYES.  DOWN BELOW!!!

HOLY GOD DAMN  :isidro:

Hehehe, my thoughts exactly. =P

BTW, folks, I was thinking, do we want a nameplate?  Or do you think a nameplate will just end up looking tacky?  James is going to sign and write the # of each helmet on the bottom anyways, so it will already show it's authenticity that way.  What do you all think?

The nameplate is a must. These are truly, truly amazing.

Thanks for your input deathbybears.  The Beast of Darkness sent me a cool website that does cool nameplates, so I will talk with them.  This is their website: http://www.headlesshearseman.com/

On a side note, here is what the katakana would look like if we do a nameplate.  Tell me if you like or don't like.  And if you don't like, and have another font in mind for Guts, then please let me know.

"Berserk" Manga (I magic wanded this directly from the cover of the manga)

"Berserk" Brush(The one that is more familiar to our eyes, requested by The Beast of Darkness)

"Guts" Font 1 (I just typed this into photoshop.  I only had like 6 fonts to choose from)

"Guts" Font 2
(http://www.berserkstatues.com/skdotnet/helmets/GutsFlat2.jpg)

Here's a place for some more fonts if you like any of these more:
http://www.wazu.jp/gallery/Fonts_Japanese.html

Let me know your thoughts!!!

PS Down the road, we can keep the "Berserk" katakana the same for all the nameplates, and just switch out the character name with "Griffith, Skullknight, Void" etc etc.  (And yes, I AM implying those 3 helmets are next!)

It's hard for my American eye to judge the katakana for Guts' name, but I feel it ought to be a bit more jagged?

For the "Guts" Katakana, I would choose the font 1, class and simple.

For this piece, I think that the Berserk logo from the manga would be more aesthetically pleasing, given the oppositions between the details. The very rough and jagged helm opposing the very sleek and perfects lines of the logo create a nice effect on the eyes.

how big is this plaque gonna be? and i'm assuming it would be on the front slope? or would it be in the corner of the base on the front right hand side?

i imagine not if he can't sell this berserker helmet to 30 people. seeing as only 8 people have sent him money........

having those 3 characters made just seems like wishful thinking at this point.....

or james won't make as many and they won't be nearly as cheap......

Man I bet I could sell some of those unsold helmets on my site... it's just, you know people they want to see the final results.

Berserk has a cult like following and a 1:1 replica of a helmet will be a hot item - I think the problem of it not selling more is the limited audience (no offense of course to the skullknight community... but even I didn't notice it until it was almost shipping and I check the site at least weekly, more when I'm subscribed to a thread like this one). I know when I saw the price tag I remember spending more on some bloody zodd guy riding a horse and it's nowhere near as cool a full size custom made helmet!

I still think James could make a killing with this item even if the preorders haven't been the most successful. I won't be receiving mine until later so maybe after that I could talk with DK about advertising it if there's unsold inventory.

Unless I'm mistaken, you're not really getting how this is being done. James isn't going to make 30 items, then wait to see if they sell or not. He's made a mold and is taking custom orders, meaning that people pay him first, then he produces the item for them. The limit of thirty is that of the maximum number of orders he will take for that particular item, but there will never be any unsold inventory. The original goal was to get around 15 orders, and so far it looks like it'll be easily met.

I'm not too bothered about there being a nameplate, I think the base as it stands with the brand will be fine.
Title: Re: 1:1 scale replica of Berserker Helmet!!!

Sorry I didn't mean unsold inventory... I meant more along the lines of if he was willing to make more for the price. I was emailing him and he said this

Quote
We don't have 30 yet, but that's how many I can get out of the mold I made.

So I figure if he does sell the goal of 15 and then there's more demand he could sell additional ones and it'll be better for him.

About the fonts :
For the berserk, I like the original one
(http://www.berserkstatues.com/skdotnet/helmets/BerserkBrushLogo.jpg)
For the guts name the font 1 is good but may be to classic, why don't use Sword Kanji on http://www.wazu.jp/gallery/Fonts_Japanese2.html or Y.OzFontK, both are more hand writing.

About the brand :
First yes it's the shape of it that doesn't match with my idea of it. I'm more in the shape of the one we can find on the AOW box. And the glow isn't as nice as expected.

The eyes are really great  :serpico:

Okay folks.  Judging from the responses, here is the final choices for nameplates.

OPTION 1: Berserk Official Brush Logo, with Guts Katakana (Hiragino, aka "Guts Font 1" from before)

OPTION 2: Berserk Official Brush Logo, with Guts Katakana (Sword Kanji)

OPTION 3: Berserk and Guts Katakana (Hiragino, aka "Guts Font 1" from before)

OPTION 4: Berserk and Guts Katakana (Sword Kanji)

By the way, the nameplate will go here (on the slant)

Please place your votes one more time!  I realize not everyone will agree, but let's just be good sports about it.  It's only the nameplate after all =).  But if I had my way, I'd do Option 1, or Option 3.  Actually, like deathbybears, I kinda dug the manga logo, since its more angular and archaic.  These brush fonts look more Japanese (I guess it depends what you are going for).

On to a few other things that have been discussed.

- About the brand, I'm sorry you feel that way Genome.  I wish you would have said something about the shape earlier though, back before the molding process.  At this point, there is not much James can do to change the shape unless he changes each one individually.  However, I'm quite happy with the shape of the brand.  I don't know how else it could really look.  In my eyes, it looks accurate to me.  The pulsating, I asked James and there's no way to change the pulsing speed of the light.  It would require James to purchase a whole new circuit board for the piece.  But again, I'm not quite sure what you were expecting.  I mean, the brand is not going to bleed.  Haha.  It's just going to pulsate and glow, which is exactly what James delivered.  I'm sorry if you had different expectations.

If there is one thing that James could do (I assume), he could just make the brand glow, instead of pulsate, if that is something you would prefer, Genome.

- Fusiongt, I'm glad you want to help promote the item! :serpico:  But, I'll have to think it over some, as I'm not sure if I want any site to really "sell" the helmets.  It certainly would be cool if you could post a little news/blurb thing and just have people come to sk.net to participate in this project (like we all have so far).  I will probably do the same on my berserkstatues.com site as soon as I get my helmet in hand.

- Nirvana, I definitely think those other 3 helmets will become a reality down the line.  James has already told me he's interested.  But I agree, it'll be nice to see more people pick up this helmet first, before starting anything new.  I have a feeling there will be more orders wants the final product in unveiled.

- Virulent, I don't think James has made any full costumes, but I know he's always wanted to make a full life size Cylon Centurion, from Battlestar Galactica.  Wouldn't that be sweet!?

Anyhow, that's it for now.  Let me know your thoughts peeps!

I like option 1 and will pay ASAP!

Have anybody given the idea of making future helmets smaller, like 1/2 or whatever?  Possibly lowering the cost and/or making them as a set. As much as I like full size, finding display space for them would be hard.

Thanks to all who contributed to a great and novel project!

General notice: don't vote on what options you prefer if you aren't going to buy the helmet. And if you intend to, you should be sending James a deposit as soon as possible if you haven't already done so.

Sure I should have said something before but in the first place I'm not pleased with the brand on the footer of the helmet, after all brand is on people not on things ^_^

i think that's a really good idea. mostly because of how much room they'll take up. maybe we could do a poll before he starts each one.... i know i'd rather have a 1:1 SK, but i don't think i'd need a 1:1 Griffith......... i'll be buying them no matter what the size, but unless there's crazy detail and whatnot involved i don't need a big silver circle taking up a bunch of space a sick Skully head could be resting on.....

The brand is there at the footer because it's supposed to mimic where Guts' brand really is (back right of neck).  Obviously, we weren't going to put it on the helmet itself.

I will ask James about making yours not pulsating, and just have it a solid light (like the eyes).  Also, Virulent, I dunno if having a push button to toggle between solid and pulsating is difficult, but I will ask.

UPDATE: Okay, seems like generally everyone likes Option 1.  So here's one last revision of it.  I made the Guts a little bit larger, and I put a diamond instead of a circle to separate the two.  I'm going to talk with the nameplate guy tonight.  He might have some nice suggestions other than just doing the nameplate on a brass/copper plate.  We'll see.  I'll keep you posted!

My personal choice would be option 3, but will go along with the majority.

Derek, will the plate be fixed to the base or can it be sent as a separate item so I can choose to use it or not?
Title: Re: 1:1 scale replica of Berserker Helmet!!!

Okay, lots of things to discuss.

Derek, will the plate be fixed to the base or can it be sent as a separate item so I can choose to use it or not?

Well, we are getting the nameplates from a guy named Fritz, who does the nameplates at www.headlesshearseman.com .  I assume there will just be a sticky adhesive on the back side of the nameplate so if you don't want a nameplate, you can tell James to just ship them unattached and you can choose yourself.

Instead of a diamond what would the berserk brand look like? They're pretty similar in shape. Just a thought, the diamond is fine too :)

I thought of this too, but wasn't sure if it was brand overkill.  This is a possibility, but first, let me bring something else up, that Joa mentioned to me.

Joa suggested having the nameplate in a different location/layout.  Here's his idea:

On base, bottom right corner
(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=11&pictureid=249)

I actually thought of this too, but didn't think it would look good.  But, after Joa photoshopped it together, it certainly makes the layout of the "Berserk" and "Guts" katakana feel more natural.  What do you all think?

Secondly, I spoke with Fritz (the nameplate maker) last night.  Really nice guy, and actually he can do MANY things when it comes to nameplates.  Never thought I would have so many options!  So look down below and give me your opinions.

NOTE 1: Fritz can do ANY colors we want, so keep that in mind.
NOTE 2: These pics are just to see the different styles.
NOTE 3: Almost all of Fritz's nameplates are 3 dimensional (very cool).  So the writing is raised, and there are borders along the plate as well.

Nameplate Option 1.  Pretty standard.  Instead of green, of course, Fritz will do black.

Nameplate Option 2.  Similar to above, just to show you what red lettering will look like.

Nameplate Option 3.  Basically, black weathered background, with raised writing in copper/bronze color.  NOTE: We could also do this but have the writing be a red color.

Nameplate Option 4.  Very stoney, rock, looking nameplate.

Nameplate Option 5.  This is more of a modern look.

He also can simply do a nameplate that looks exactly like this:

I know there's a lot to think about, but hopefully we can all somewhat agree on something.  Also, feel free to check out his other nameplates if there is something else you like:
http://www.vampir.headlesshearseman.com/plates.html

Thanks guys!

i'd like it to look like this. maybe with the guts katakana centered about half the size underneath it?

He also can simply do a nameplate that looks exactly like this:

and i would prefer it to be on the bottom right hand corner. when i asked where the placement would be the other day i was hoping the answer wouldn't be on the front slope............

if it is gonna be on the front slope, i'd like my nameplate to come unattached. but if it's gonna be in the bottom right hand corner i'll take it already attached.

I received my helmet yesterday and I have to say that anybody who is slightly interested in it and hasn't put any money down on it should do so ASAP! It's fucking beautiful! The pictures posted thus far really don't do it justice. It's so much better in real life. I can't believe how good it turned out.

I got blood on mine and no nameplate.

Sometime tomorrow I'll post pictures of it, but anyone who has the money should definitely do themselves the favor of picking this up. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Can I make a suggestion for the next helmet? ............. Grunbeld! 1:1 scale. I would sell my house for the level of craftsmanship of this guts applied to something that big and be homeless with that helmet for the rest of my life. Now I really want a Grunbeld helmet. That's what I'm set on. Grunbeld! Who's with me?!?!?!?!?!?!

Yeah man, that's a very good idea, a 1:1 Grunbeld helmet would be killer!

Looking forward to seeing how it looks with blood :guts:

SAME HERE! =P

Man, I'm really sorry about the lag of pictures on my end.  I've been traveling a lot the past 2 weeks and I don't want to take shitty pictures, so I keep postponing it.  To answer some questions, in theory every helmet will be SLIGHTLY different, but that is the same with all statues/figures from AOW.  Certainly, the sculpt/mold will be the same, but the paint job could vary tiny.  However, when it comes to judging the paint job, it's very difficult to take accurate pictures that will really show it off.  I'm worried about that too, when I take photos of mine.  I can assure you that mine is quite weathered looking and not "smooth" as you are afraid of.

Nirvana, I'm sooo happy you are pleased with it!!!  Even though I didn't paint or sculpt it, it's a relief to know that so far the first 2 people that have received it (you and bruhaha) are satisfied. =)  WOO HOO!

And Grunbeld... would be SICK, but I dunno, I think James and I are talking about a Skullknight next.  Hehehehe.

Also, I talked to James and he wanted me to mention that the blood in real life actually is BLOOD RED.  In the pics above (I'm guessing it's the flash or the white balance setting) the blood looks kinda orange, but rest assured it is not that!

It's simply amazing.

Yeah, it's definitely blood red in real life. And it's not a solid evenly distributed red either like the pictures would lead you to believe. The flash wasn't on so I guess it's the white balance? I so rarely take pictures of my statues and things that I don't really care enough to make them look perfect. Is that dumb? :schnoz:

And Grunbeld... would be SICK, but I dunno, I think James and I are talking about a Skullknight next.  Hehehehe.

I hate to sound like I'm complaining, but I was under the impression he was just gonna be making helmets...... Would this SK be 1:1 scale too? and if so, would it have the spiked collar? or just his head? (this is the part where it might sound like I'm complaining) If he's willing to just make random things, and not stick to helmets, I imagine there's something he could make that more people would buy than a giant SK head. Something AOW hasn't done multiple versions of..... or some type of smaller simple diorama.

I don't see why I wouldn't buy anything Berserk he makes, but if our options our almost endless, why not get a little greedy.....  :beast:

I have an idea that hasn't been mentioned yet... what if James made a (1:1 scale) face or bust of Guts? Can he do face sculpts? It could be a normal or angry expression, that would be up to the majority but If he did make that and it looked good I may have to sell some stuff to get it if i can afford it.

Probably be impossible at this point but he could make one that could wear the armor if you had both.  :troll:

SORRY SK'ERS!  I know I lagged on this.  But here it is!  An HD video of the helmet!  Unfortunately, when you click on the HD button in youtube, the picture stutters quite a bit.  I dunno, maybe it's my internet connection, but most places I go I still can't get HD video on youtube to run great.

But, I uploaded it also to my website, so you can just download the full .mov if you'd like.  It's higher resolution anyways.

Hey everyone, I already talked a little bit to DirectDK about this, but what would you all think of a 1:1 wearable Rakshas mask?  :rakshas: Come on, you know it would be awesome, even if you just displayed it amongst your other Berserk stuff. I'd personally like one though so that I could cosplay Rakshas at upcoming anime cons, since I barely see any Berserk where I go, and I've never seen any Rakshas cosplay even online. Thanks to DirectDK and James in advance for any and all effort they put into their future Berserk work, and especially thanks for everything they've done so far. You guys are awesome.

The problem is the material I think. Those replica helmets are meant for display only and I'm pretty sure they'd quickly be damaged if someone tried wearing them. Same goes for a mask. I think it'd have to be created differently. Furthermore, Rakshas has 3 eyes and that might come as a problem when cosplaying as him. You'd need some LEDs or something to simulate his glowing eyes.

Hey Darklink.  I think a 1:1 Rakshas is a GREAT idea.  I definitely would like to commission James to make one down the road.  As far as it being wearable, not sure about that.  Will have to talk about it with James.

However, it seems that the next helmet James and I will be working on is a SKULLKNIGHT one.  I will start a new thread for this helmet when the time comes, but I hope y'all are interested!!!!!

Lastly, the nameplates have been delayed.  However, I recently got a work-in-progress shot of them.  They will look more weathered and "old" after more touch ups.

I've been trying to make a wearable version of this helmet for a while now... with varying success ^^;

Both the work in progress shots and the work cryo did on the 3D model have been an immense help to me! Before I found them I only had the videos I ripped from the Berserk PS2 Game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjXavJe1Fcg) to help, I don't think I'd have even thought of attempting it without those references to help me.

I'd still love to get one of these anyway (if only I could factor one into my current budget), just for future reference how much do you think you'd charge to ship one to the UK? If at all?  :beast:

Don't remember if item was sent UPS or not but I thought James packaging was excellent. Maybe add extra cardboards inside for added thickness; that's what Shopping Mall Japan for me.

USPS has been good to me. And in case you guys didn't know, USPS have discount, think 10%, when paying online plus free pick-up.

Hey folks.  James is deeply sorry for what has happened during transit to the last few buyers.  He asked me to copy/paste his email, so please take the time to read.

Quote
I feel I need to make a much needed apology to the last set of folks who received their helmets.  At first I believed the damage might have been caused by negligent shipping service, but after five in a row with damage, I fully accept the blame and will do my best to make it right for everyone. Next I'd like to apologize to the five who received damage to their helmets.  I've already wrote back and forth with each of you and I am very greatful that each of you are willing for me to make it right with your transactions.  Skullknight.net is truly a great community and I'm glad to be working with you.

For future buyers of my products, please feel confident that the products will be given great care in fabrication and shipping--mostly due to the lessons learned by this recent mishap of events.

Once again I am sorry and I'm going to do my very best for all of your complete satisfaction.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

It's not his fault I'm sure. I work at UPS and try to tell everyone I know to never ship through us. If you've only seen the nightmares that I have seen in UPS hubs....The workers just don't care(Not me of course I am actually the few that do care about other people's property). Even if James were to package it perfectly the incompetence and irresponsibility of some UPS loaders will find some way to make sure it gets slightly damaged. I always have my stuff shipped USPS even if it costs more. Never had a prob.

Yeah, I believe he was an inexperienced shipper.  He packed very carefully as far as protecting the surfaces of the sculpt, but without adequate padding of the whole object against dropping force (IE padding between the object and the box walls).  My advice from my shipping days would be to surface wrap the 2 parts a little separately, then wrap them together, making sure there's some good padding between them (this prevents them from shifting into a bad position in shipping, and keeps their inertia equal, largely preventing one damaging the other during a drop), then use plenty of good packing fill in the box.  Ideally the object should be at least a few inches from any box wall.

In real life few shippers will get a box to your door without throwing or dropping it at least three feet at least once.  If you would not happily and confidently drop your own packed box from chest height, you cannot justifiably feel confident it will survive shipping.  :void:

That's an alarming rate.

I'm really glad the artist took responsibility though I'm sorry such beautiful pieces got damaged. I can only imagine the disappointment the five owners must have felt. I hope no more pieces will arrive damaged.

A stupid question just out of curiosity, from what I read it gave me the impression that at least some of the helmets will be replaced with new ones; if this is the case, does it mean that those new helmets will count against the maximum of 30 that could be made?

the helmet itself is a sight to behold as well... i'm very please with the purchase.

Is that Lime and Chili or Wasabi and Soy Sauce?  :guts:

Good catch! That's Lime and Chili in the picture haha. But last time I get those - they are good, but for the same money the Wasabi is the best!

After coming across a listing for one of these on eBay, I've been thinking about getting one of these very seriously. Given a couple weeks, I may put down the deposit money, so please put me down as a maybe.

So twenty helmets have been sold so far.  The production run is only 30, so once they are gone, they are GONE!  No "re-release special anniversary repaints ala AOW" here! :guts:  So if you want one, better act quickly!

Also, it's pretty crazy... I know, but the guy doing the nameplates with the Guts/Berserk kanji hasn't finished them yet.  But they are almost done.  They just need some touch ups.  Here is a shot of them thus far.

I just wanted to say thanks to James and Derek for this marvelous project,
James did an amazing work on this helmet, the sculpt is perfect and the paint job couldn't have been more realistic,
a true piece of art, no other words to describe it.

Just put down the deposit on this, just wondering how are people who already own one of these displaying them?

I have pretty limited space so it's more than likely I've have to clear out a junk room just to house this thing, or keep it in the loft or something

you know, that does sound awesome. Maybe I should do that. Though, I've been in my house for 3 years and I've NEVER used my fireplace.

I've been struggling on how to display my pieces and decided to just use my mantle/fireplace. Waiting for Skull knight to put next to Berserk helm then i might try your idea with more pictures!

I will definately say that these are awsome looking replica helmets. I'm an artist myself and considered making one a while ago then happened across www.berserkstatues.com and liked this one so much I committed to buying one.

I already paid my deposit and I must say I'm dying to see it when it's done and arrives at my home! I begged my husband to let me get this, I'm lucky he finds my dorky obsessions cute. Any tips on child-proofing it for display? I have a two year old girl that likes my Berserk collectables a little too much.

Hey guys,

I have been enjoying my Berserk helmet for a while now. Absolutely love it! But when I had left it on for a whole day by mistake the leds seem to have gotten dimmer and dimmer... then the left side got completely dark!! When I opened the Berserk helmet one of the LEDs was in fact not working/burnt (there are a total of 4 LEDs - two in front and two in back). So I started talking to James about some options and he was more then willing to repair it for free if I just ship to him. But I decided to go ahead and try fixing it with a friend of mine since my friend knows how to do wiring. So we went out to Frys and bought a flexible LED strip, some wires, and connectors. Opened the Helmet and pretty much just cut the current wire and rewired everything - bypassing the current LEDs in there with the new LED strip I got. That way we can still use the current switch and battery.

Here are the pictures!

Here is the Flexible LED strip that I soldered the + and - that will then connect to the switch.

Here is the strip inside the helmet poking out. It was long enough to go around the whole bottom trim of the Berserk eyes.
James had put tin foil on the bottom cover so his LEDs in there will reflect and get a smoother glow.
So only have LEDs on the bottom of the eyes didn't make a difference since it would be reflected inside.

And then finally! here is my Berserk Helmet even brighter then before and more importantly - with working eyes that light up!

I just got my Berserk helmet in the mail today! Loving it!! Except carrying it down the stairs in its GIANT box to my apartment almost got me killed...

Sadly I don't have a place to display to display it yet...

My daughter squealed in excitement and yelled "dragon" when she saw it. (She seems to think it's for her...)

I love the glowing eyes!

I received mine late last week and wow it did not disappoint. Any fan with the funds should definitely try and scoop up one of the last few. And you have absolutely no excuse if you already picked up the Skull Knight helmet. They are such a cute couple! I should post pictures. I just have get off my lazy ass!

I know it's early but any clues on the follow up? I'm thinking either a Femto helmet or even a Zodd bust!

Yeah she says a ton of words, and she loves dragons! Well she loves a lot of things, like playing with my cheaper Berserk figures... She really enjoyed the glowing eyes on the statue which makes it a million times better.

I'm not sure if it's just me but mine looks like it is tilting ever so slightly to one side...I'm afraid it'll fall over. Otherwise, it is super awesome!!

I want a Femto to happen, but we need to sell more SK helmets before that happens.  I'm surprised we haven't been selling too many yet.  The SK helmet is pure HOTNESS.

EDIT: I guess I got lucky! Zoliv sold me his Berserker helmet due to personal reasons, and I got my package today, along with the SK helmet. Hats off to Zoliv for shipping them to me safely, and so quick, much thanks. Here are some pictures.

Congrats IncantatioN!!!  Glad that your collection can now be complete =).  About your brand, it's probably the battery.  If you switch out the battery and still no luck, then yeah, definitely email James and he will help you through it.  It's possible that one of the wires came loose or something.

I was too tired from coming back from the convention and opening up the stuff last night heh. Yeah, my brand's battery ran down too, I'll check out the wiring whenever I get around to replacing it.  It's possible that there's a very slight contact short somewhere, since the eye light battery is still at like 95%.

Congrats getting these helmets!  I hope to get in on another one in the future too.

How often and how long do you guys leave the lights on??
