If Miura had some balls he would've said that since the beginning, before they started producing this anime. No wonder the movie is doing poorly. Rehash what everyone has already seen with a crappy new skin? Something that doesn't feel remotely like Berserk. And with all the shitty cash grab merchandise and promotion? Bleh.
At least the old anime was more faithful, didn't pretend to be this EPIC thing with every little sequence trying to be more spectacular than the previous, and at least had a soundtrack by someone who has been an inspiration while Miura draws.
I might be a grumpy bastard, but this whole project stinks.

To be precise. The TV-Show is a crappy tv-show. It's not limited animation anymore, it feels like dragon ball z in its worst moments. And who wants a perfect retelling of the manga anyways? That's on the one hand fuckign impossible and second why would you just imitate something, just create something new/different out of it. That's what i wish for. You can say all taht bullcrap when you watched the movie, but beforehand its just bullcrap. after that it's your bullcrappy opinion.

And to be honest. Retelling? Everyone would have forgot that shitty tv-show till now and say " oh, what happened there?! Mhm...can't remember" and then there should be a follow-up to that? Sorry but i think since the tv-show was executed this bad they had to rehash everything. And i'm glad. Because the tv-show is unwatchable.

Heyho! Great Podcast.  Everything has been summed up by the posts before. so i'll make it quick and get some questions for your next podcasts.

Tell us which potential development in the manga would break your heart, personally. Just to ask which relationship/interaction between person(s) or which sole person is so important to you that you really don't want to lose him/her/it. And of course the big why you have so much love for them.

I tend to agree with this sentiment. For instance, she is in the '97 anime only during the eclipse when she kills Corkus, but she is not portrayed other than that (i.e. Episode 1).  I would be much more excited if someone happens to find a picture like this of The Count, but perhaps kaimera knows something we don't.

Yep you're both right, i got a bit carried away by my thoughts.Though i wouldn't take the '97 Anime as an argument  :griffnotevil:.

But to be honest. She is way more active in the first volume. She's talking to guts. The scene with corkus is important. but there she is just a tool to conclude corkus stampede. And that is his death. I never wanted to say corkus death is unimportant, but her role is not significant. And her role in the first volume is not way more significant. But at least a bit. That's all.

Edit: The Screen is from the MagnetTV episode Dar Klink posted here
It is 43:48 and then. So it seems like they are doing the eclipse there. yep.

Hmm, that could be from something totally unrelated to the Berserk Saga Project though; it could be an independent work. Also, while it would be nice to assume that it's from the Black Swordsman arc, and that they are animating it, she also plays an important part during the Eclipse. Only time will tell...

I asked the person who uploaded the picture in the board. I will tell you all when i got more information on that one..
Yeah could be just for the Eclipse. But so much effort just for one little scene of slaughtering corkus? mhm

So i hope it will get good reviews and makes a good comeback at the box office. But to be honest, normally the box-office gets it's highest volume on the weekend debut. So now you can say that until the next weekend it will possibly gross 20 % to 40 % less than on the debut. It will of course steadily decrease. Unless it gets a insiders' tip and many go to watch it. So i assume it will gross in 3-4 weeks about 1 to 1,5 million dollar. Now it would be useful to know what the production costs were.

I'd like to think that they sat next to each other during the whole movie and at one point Miura yawned, stretched out his arms, then put an arm around her. Then when she turned to look at him, he took his index finger, pointed to the screen twice, then took his thumb and thumbed himself, all while wearing a "mysterious smile" on his face, as if to say, "Hey babe, look what I created."

Seriously I hope they're a secret couple.
I hope so! But not in this macho behaviour you described ;). I can't picture him that way. But they could work out as a couple in my fantasy, since i like her works!

Thanks for the translation Aazealh, sounds awesome! Can't wait for this movie to be rls'd on blu-ray.

The CGI bothers me as well. But it could be due to the trailers and we dunno how heavy they used it. The important parts aren't the battles. And if they catch the mood right there (okay there are some important and meaningful, yes, more, but still) it won't bug me that much,

Anyways. Am i the only one that needs sunglasses for some scenes? It is so over the top lit up like Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
Ah and thanks for all the great coverage for all non-nico-nico-douga-premium users :)

I hope that they do, but your argument is no better than mine at this point.

Yeah you're right. That's somehow what i wantedt to transport. There are details to critisize, because we only have it. Okay details that may weight more than the word detail is suggesting. I admit that it looks like they are shifting many stuff for what ever reasons.

I have to say, the CGI is, as i looked now at it in super slow-motion and HD , a hopefully fixable problem. Most of the stuff could be done by a overpainting. The colour-palette in the cgi stuff is just unfitting with the the background style which is like a painting and with that very brushy.
The Horse scenes are very interesting. I just looked at this video . And with that you can immediately see, that the backside of the horse is moving up, but the horses in the trailer-scene just use their legs. the only other part that is moving is the head. The next flaw is the movement of the legs, you see that in the shot from the side. the changeover from landing and spurting is totally off. As well as in the whole scene the legs don't seem to touch the ground at all. And what makes it more odd, the cavaliers are shifting as if the upperside of the horse is shifting. That is a huge animation fail, dunno why they included this in the trailer, looks so odd.  Maybe they should look at the horse scenes in "Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron". They aren't perfect, but still better than this and from 2002. 'nuff gripe :P

Actually, it's quite telling. If they can't get the smallest details correct, what makes you think they'll get the bigger ones right?
That is, sorry, no argument. It's more likely that they get the overall stuff right. At least in some ways. They could fail as well with the right button. It's a mistake that's for sure, but it's saying nothing about the final product. the argument is this way and vice-versa just speculating.
And to be honest. There are two ways of making the manga into a anime. 1. The Faithful way 2. The abstract way. Both ways can fail. But i would love to see a good second version. The most faithful version will always be the manga itself. And i would love to see what the team does with the manga in a new medium (anime).

Though, was Casca wearing her helmet during the IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT scene? Not a big deal to me, 'cause that face is really expressive and well drawn in that new animation shot.

Nope she wasn't wearing her helmet in this scene in the manga. But looks like they captured the mood of that scene anyways.
The second last picture, does anyone know from where it is? Looks like the field before the eclipse, but i'm not sure.

At least in the Animenewsnetwork there's Susumu noted as the man for the music.  :daiba:
And i still see the possibility of her singing the theme song with Susumu as the producer of the whole score and the theme song.

I'll second Griffith and Aazealh statements. I just want to add some little spices to it. That Studio 4C is indeed capable of superb animation can be seen in Spriggan. Just watch this 2 minutes of heavenly animation: . I can understand criticism on CGI, since i am a bit allergic to it too, but this is just senseless ranting. I'll expect good things by seeing the trailer. By the way, i thought the outcome of the animation with cgi would be worse and the first test-footage trailer proved me wrong. Even though you see the weaknesses, or yet limitations:  Guts armor, the big fighting scene or the alienation between the fore- and background, which is mostly in animation not that noticeable but in screencaps. Anyways since this is somehow test-footage i'm expecting at least good things, that this won't be a hand-drawn watercolor ghibli dream is for sure, but i never expected that.
Ah and btw, too cool you down, just look at what the involved staff did so far. Nothing outstanding, but pretty solid. What i consider important is the screenplay, and the guy ( that is in charge of that seems pretty good and capable of serious stuff as well (Planetes).
And i just want to say, stop your over-active criticism till the first teaser arrives and you watched it. Because i want to look forward to the movie and then finally shed tears over falling in love with Casca again! :)

I think the difference lies in the method of CG.  This CG is trying to emulate hand-drawn animation (Ie; using cell-shading and pen outlines) however it comes off looking overly smooth when compared to traditional animation.  People didn't complain about the CG in the video game because Everything was CG.  The characters were all heavily textured, with the style geared more towards realism than a cartoon.

I think people associate traditional animation with authenticity sometimes despite the quality.  2D animation is something people are used to.  We've seen it since we were kids, while the CG feels foreign, despite looking cleaner and smoother.
That's nearly my position. But i'm not against using CG in Anime, but it is indeed hard to embed it well. Also I had the feeling that cg could olden very fast when it is not very well embedded. The effect at the scene with zodd didn't bug me. But the CG with the SK, doesn't felt right. I mean the manga is very dark and the drawing style expresses that darkness very well. But a polished CG version. Okay i will try to make it easier to understand with some images etc. give me some time walther

Can't say I am happy with that CG SK. Looks like cel shading of XIII. No it doesn't look good. If it would look like that i would rather want a animated light novel like aaz mentioned :D haha...oh god :judo:

My thoughts exactly from the beginning music wise..
To the music. I can't do anything with it. I am fine with it, but i don't think it is the best fitting berserk music or the best thing that can happen to berserk. I think in Paprika Hirasawas music was the only weak point. It's too poppy electronica. I don't know. We'll see, i hope they find a good one. Just get Konno or get a newcomer with a new musical approach to berserk.

I can't say i like the CG in the end where zodd flies up. At a certain moment they cut off the amount of detail they had before and you can see a clumsy cg figure...but aside that. it is AMAZING. I mean the angle, how everything is directed...lovely...can't make it unseen. omg... when studio 4C worked on this since 2 years and now releases a shit load of episode...i would be dying in happiness (ok that was too much, i don't think they did this)

I know this topic is from thousand years of tipping ago but i had to reheat it.
@Aaz and walther how did it turned out?
I'm moving to Berlin to study and i wanted to use the rasterbator method to embellish my walls. How did you mounted them on the wall? And which would be the best images from berserk and vagabond to rasterbate. questions over questions. When i got my apartment done i will rasterbate and of course post it :) I saw a good method on ikeahackers

They were also far more faithful to the original work than the vast majority of film adaptations, though (see Dragonball Evolution). Normal procedure would have been to take a few elements from all three books and randomly sprinkle them into a single 120-minute film using similar character names, probably in a modern-day setting.
That's right, but you can't possible expect the most faithful version. I mean, the most faithful version to lord of the rings were maybe 4-6 films. But that wouldn't be the best cinema experience. I just wanted to express the fact that there wouldn't be a very true anime version of berserk, i think it is impossible. But it can be very true to the anime with a scope of own development. It just was important to me, because i had the feeling there are many that hope for the most true anime version.

You know, compared to us most people on the Internet do not treat Berserk or its author with any respect at all. In that regard a new anime would not change too many things. Even if it doesn't do it justice, what difference will it make? The 1997 TV series didn't do it justice either (but it brought most of us into the series and it would be unfair to disregard that fact). Berserk will always be Berserk, nothing will change that. And as far as the fan base goes, won't change either.
I second that! And the fact that it won't be like the manga is clear to me. You would need a very high budget to realize a very true to the manga anime version, lots of time and talent. So why don't script the story in to another direction and i think they will manage something likeable. But a interpretation of your beloved story is everytime a very interesting thing. So any approach on the berserk story is interesting to me. the best example of a film adaption is lord of the rings. The movies are amazing. They are superb. Even though they never covered every part of the books, never reached the depth of the original story. they were amazing. the only thing you could worry about is that more will just look the movies but don't read the original story. but that's highly doubtful

Everything here is confusing. Aaz you're right, he has a good narrating voice. Like it too. But i don't think he would be the best choice for griffith. he should have a warm, soft but authorative voice.
Anyway, am i the only one that didn't like the scene in the snow? It was a bit exaggerated and dramatic. I thought of a very gentle but very depressing scenario. and not with a fountains of snow and a camera surge.. :beast:
