Character Cove / ApostleBob's updated Guide to Reoccurring Apostles
« on: May 18, 2018, 09:12:54 PM »
In anticipation of the next Berserk Episode, I decided to update my guide to Apostles the reappear through out the series. It now includes MANY more apostles that appear throughout the series, including the New Band of the Hawk's demon soldiers. There are so many more reoccurring background characters than I originally noticed and I wanted a more complete guide that could be added to as the series goes on.

I've given them each nicknames so that I can track them easier. They aren't the most creative names but are pretty strait forward. One thing that I thought could be fun for the community is is to try and assign our own names to them. If we get really good suggestions I'll change them on the guide. Let me know what we should call these guys.

And of course if you spot any other re-occuring Apostles please point them out to me and I'll add them to the list.

I've now made a few additions to my Recurring Apostle Rogues Gallery as of this recent episode. Miura has started reusing a few designs from the Ganishka battle and the Eclipse. I love how each apostle is individually unique and how each was once human and has a tragic backstory of their own. Amazing designs.

Out of curiosity, does the 2017 Blu Ray have updates to the GrunGeld fight at all? Are the animations a bit smoother? Does the cannon still clip through his cand when he shoots Grunbeld's shield or does he armor retract?

Well we have some returning apostles and a few new ones. I need to update my rogues gallery, but here's what I noticed right away. I apologize for the list of links.

There are quite a few returning apostles from the 'Unleash Evil' battle against the Ganishka spawn. -

The Horn-headed octopus-guy featured prominently in that fight:

And the Skeletal Goat apostle is back:

The bug apostle was also there (This guy really needs a name):

There is also an apostle from the Eclipse that's shown up in the same Ganishka battle. He's the pincher phallus guy.

We also get to see his full body now:

There is also a praying mantis apostle we've seen once before with Ganishka, but never close up.

Beyond that, I'll need to do more comparisons on the quadruped ones. Some might be returning stars.

And so far no apostle deaths since Falconia!

I love how the Giants have all sorts of recycled shields, armor and even a rooftop used as armor. In the two page spread it looks like one is using a cannon, and another a battering ram as a club in addition to the trees of the others. Very creative details that tell us right away that these giants are dangerous and yet have no real culture of their own. They are just scavenging human things.

Interesting that the giants don't really get any good hits on Griffith's army. No humans or apostles really take any damage. It seems like this is all pretty routine for the Band of the Falcon.

I'm surprised we don't see Grunbeld or Zodd get any hits in here after they've been featured the way they are. Probably something for next episode.

BTW: Any Hardcore History listeners get a "Celtic Holocaust" vibe here?[/spoiler]

Yep, I love that series. It really puts events like this and the general approach to ancient warefare into a historical context

What a fantastic episode.

I'm fairly surprised that Casca initially wakes up so calmly and cheerfully, but I love that it's a false sense of security until she gets to Guts. Miura really had me thinking it was going to be a sweet and simple reunion after all the struggle to bring her back. I was even starting to get comfortable with that until I saw that image with the eye. Miura has used that many times before, and it created fantastic dread at this moment. Those final pages are incredible.

I'm stoked to see where Miura takes it from here. We're in uncharted territory in the series now. I can't wait to see where it's taken next.

Thanks for the update. I was wondering if they were actually going to fix some of those awful animations. I'm glad that they are.

Did they fix any of the animations with the Berserker armor in the Grunbeld fight by chance? Does the cannon still just clip through his hand when he breaks up the shield?

It would have been nice for the Redux project for consistency. That said, the new actors aren't that dissimilar except for Griffith, who sounds like an american chain smoker.

The challenge for Casca now is to put that piece into her life, to find a place for it in her concious life, and make concious decisions about it and face the consequences, which are going to be truly decissive in the future. Perhaps in the future the mother will be able to add more insight on this matter. I feel that only his parents alone will have the power to use the key their child represents: a human pathway to Femto's weakness

Great point here on the symbolism of it being a part she needs to embrace to become complete.

I'm surprised the Dragon Slayer was brought along with the armor, I really thought that it would be a separate escalation to the scene once they seem to be out of everything. It looks like that's Flora instead, and how great and unexpected is that. Good call on the hat Aaz, Miura really did go out of his way to point out the sentiment Schierke has with it. Mozgus really is getting a lot of action in this arc.  :mozgus:

Really creative fighting with the dog and Falcon. The cannon out the mouth is perfect dream imagery. And once again, Miura called back on old Apostle designs, keeping things very consistent throughout.

The demon child is an interesting touch. We'll see if it's just a token like the others or if we'll get something different. It certainly does add a lot of emphasis on the importance of the child, which seems conisistent with the idea that it will factor in heavily in the series endgame.

Thanks Aaz and Puella on the quick translation!

It's just around the corner...

I doubt we're gonna see Casca healed without some type of final mental resistance that goes on for a few episodes. That said, it's an opportunity for Miura to get really creative with representing the trauma Griffith left on her. I'm expecting heartbreak and nightmare fuel.

Guts is pissed and ready to storm the tower. The latest fan-edit continues on from right where the previous one ends, with Guts trying to find a way to save Casca before itís too late. Sheís been captured by the inquisition in a highly guarded tower just as  the malevelant souls of the Churchís victims are about to boil over into the material world. Guts will have to join forces with strangers and enemies, and once again rely on others if heís to get his love back. Will he be able to overcome a catastrophe that has already been written by mysterious forces? Or is he struggling against a losing battle that humans are helpless against?

Notable inclusions in this edit are musou footage to emphasize the tower catastrophe. Farnese and Serpico are no longer overtly brother and sister. Many other smaller edits, and voice dubbing have been made to correct the story and avoid visual confusion. The aim is to make this feel like a movie.

Those familiar with the manga will know that many pivotal moments are not captured in any outside media, so donít consider this a replacement for either the very excellent manga, nor any of the original media included for that matter, all of which has itís own unique tone and personality.

If any problems are spotted, please call them out and Iíll do my best to correct them in the next update.

Special thanks to Mista_L for audio splitting, and to the team at Berserk Fandub, CapnFloof, Lucien1911, Bomberguy, Diegmeist, Henry Schraeder, Crok425, and Shin Chie, and Manganomix for additional voice work.

Changes:
-All commercial transitions removed
-Uncensored version includes more gore
-Opening music changes to something more appropriate
-Clang has been diminished
-Farnese and Serpico no longer refer to one another as siblings.
-Shortened Luca's fall to be more realistic
-Removed a few of Nina's whiney moments to make her more relatable
-Removed a couple comic relief moments to keep the tension high.
-Added Musou footage of tower crumbling to emphasize that it's mimicking the giant hand from the eclipse
-Clarified that Griffith is inhabiting the demon child
-Many edits and unnecessary crazy camera moves have been modified

FUTURE EDITS
-Changing the music as Griffith appears to something more appropriate.

The Black Swordsman is back. The latest fan-edit continues on from right where the previous one ends, with Guts on his quest for revenge against the Apostles and God Hand. But an urgent vision shared by all leads him back to Casca, who he had left in the safety of his friends. Meanwhile, after witnessing the supernatural with Guts, Farnese buries her insecurities with her faith by doubling down on religious duties by assisting an Inquisition into suspected Heretics at an ancient holy tower.

Notable inclusions in this edit are Zoddís vision, and an extended and fixed encounter between Guts and Skull Knight. Farnese and Serpico are no longer overtly brother and sister. Many other smaller edits, and voice dubbing have been made to correct the story and avoid visual confusion. The aim is to make this feel like a movie.

If any problems are spotted, please call them out and Iíll do my best to correct them in the next update.

There will be at least one more Redux coming to complete the Conviction arc.

Special thanks to Mista_L for audio splitting, and to the team at Berserk Fandub, CapnFloof, Lucien1911, Bomberguy, Diegmeist, Henry Schraeder, Crok425, and Shin Chie, and Manganomix for additional voice work.

CHANGES:
-Color correction will bring all four animation sources looking similar.
-Zodd prophesy scene added from Musou with new dialogue
-All commercial transitions removed
-All references to Farnese and Serpico being siblings has been removed.
-The encounter between SK and Guts has been re-dubbed and extended to be more accurate
-The heretic orgy has more ominous cult music.
-Clang has been diminished
-Many unnecessary crazy camera moves have been modified to be more coherent

Berserk Miscellaneous / Re: How Did You Find Out About Berserk?
« on: August 02, 2017, 07:37:49 PM »
I had a D&D group that played regularly and someone kept talking about this amazing anime that kind of fit the D&D world. The guy gushed about it, but we were all a bit skeptical because anime can be pretty polarizing and weird at times. But he wore us down and we decided to do a screening night with drinks and pizza over the course of two nights. It started pretty typically and we were all bemoaning cliches here and there that were later subverted and by the time we got to the court intrigue, we were all hooked.

Fast forward a year or two when I was going through different comic series and I decide to see what that whole Eclipse thing was about and see where the story went from there. It was the First Manga I read since Akira, and remains that way, but I was hooked. The Art, the story, the characters. The creativity and brutality, and the commentary on human nature. What's not to love? Ever since then I've been on SK.net at least once a week, and have been following it episodically ever since.

Berserk Redux - Chapter 5: The Black Swordsman is now out. The new fan-edit continues on from right where the previous one ends, at the Eclipse. With his comrades all lost, Guts goes down a new path into darkness against impossible odds, and becomes a dark legend hunted by the Holy See.

For those unfamiliar, Berserk Redux is a project aiming at blending together the Golden age trilogy, the í97 anime, the 2016 anime, and the musou game into a more faithful and cinematic narrative than the originals presented. The original media in each often left plot and character moment holes that other media filled. These fan-edits aim to fix that.
This particular fan-edit combines media from several sources to put together a Berserk plot arc not found fully in any of the media available, but only in scattered pieces. This led to four different primary sources for this film (the most so far) as well as significant help from the Berserk Fan dub community to fix several incorrect lines, and create previously non-existent plot elements.

Those familiar with the manga will know that the Count and the Lost Children arc are unavailable on any media outside the manga, and the 2016 anime takes several liberties, so donít consider this a replacement for either the very excellent manga, nor any of the original media included for that matter, all of which has itís own unique tone and personality.

Special thanks to Mista_L for audio splitting, and to the team at Berserk Fandub, CapnFloof, Lucien1911, Bomberguy, Diegmeist, Henry Schraeder, Crok425, and Shin Chie, and Manganomix for additional voice work.

CHANGES:
- This fan-edit combines The Golden Age: Advent, The '97 Berserk anime, The Berserk Musou game, and Berserk 2016, making this film the first Redux with so many different media sources.
- The 2016 footage is uncensored and has updated animations
- English Dub used for consistency with previous Redux entries
- All commercial break logos cut
- Replaced narrator dialogue with better voice actor that sounds like Void
- Updated the title sequence to have a dark skinned Casca and new music
- Updated the Dragon Slayer Clang Sound to sound less ridiculous
- Skull knight meeting now includes a lot of additional dialogue to set up the interstice better and explain the Demon Child, and Guts's quest for vengeance
- Casca giving birth is included
- Puck is now included in the bar scene after the time skip
- Added iconic 'It was too big to be called a sword' line after it's first use in the bar.
- Guts has nightmares about the Eclipse while camping in the woods
- Guts's encounter with the spectres at night in the '97 anime has been shortened due to looking bad and being very redundant to the dialogue after the skeleton fight
- The Demon Tree is removed due to it upstaging the snake Baron, being strangely placed, and using the canon too frequently. It is also confusing to Guts nightly hauntings
- The Snake Baron story is included
- The tree does not attack after the skeletons, and the skeleton fight is slightly extended.
- Collette and Morgan are included in the Bar scene, making them recurring characters
- Additional frames have been added to fight sequences that move too fast in 2016
- Added preview footage when Guts kills the second set of Holy Iron Chain Knights, because the original looked cheap and sloppy
- Flashback to Golden Age after Guts is captured uses original dialogue from '97 anime
- Small edits in Farnese's interrogation to remove some of the cheaper looking flashbacks
- Changed sword hits on spectres to match the sound from the Golden Age: Advent film
- Added small eclipse flashback to make the Apostles dialogue make more sense
- Cut about a minute of the Apostle and Guts talking about meat quality
- Small edits with the possessed Horse to make the scene look less pervy, but still feel uncomfortable
- Theres nothing I can do about the credits over the final images

Unfortunately this episode is bringing up some people that believe Casca was raped by the apostles before Femto in the eclipse (phallic creatures), and don't that want to understand that she was not.

It's always been a bit ambiguous, especially with the time gap between when we last see her and when Guts does. The flashbacks focusing on them don't help either. However it doesn't seem physically possible due to the size and shape of some of the apostles. Hopefully the coming episodes will lay all this to rest once and for all.

Regardless, Casca had a traumatic experience throughout the Eclipse. Even without raping her, the monstrous apostles were probably their hedonistic selves and left a deep impression.

EDIT: BTW Please note that I did NOT name the linked to topic that title.

Really??  His canon is extending through his fucking hand:rickert:

Yeah, it's really stupid. Even with an extra week to animate it, they had models cliping through stuff.  The fight itself is pretty slow and they don't add a single extra blow between the two of them, making it feel like a couple hits and they're done. And of course there's tons of monologuing between attacks.

It was better than most, but as usual, sloppy where it mattered. Also it looks like they're cutting out the apostle assault on Wyndham (and Ganishka's introduction). But who really cares anymore?

Maybe. My guess is they're doing the same crap they did with the beginning of this season with Griffith in Shet. I bet we open with Locus and friends at Wyndham next episode. Even if we do, the pacing and ordering on this thing sucks.
