Left 4 Dead

SaiyajinNoOuji

I'm still better than you
Yea I saw this Friday night when I started to install TF2. I am losing interest in L4D ever since I started to play as a Pyro

Has anyone tried it or are there any reviews on how the Beta SDK is?

I only have the xbox version so I don't know if this applies to the pc version of the game. There is little incentive for people to stick around and play the whole game. Getting a good game going is a really hard to accomplish task. This is pretty much what happens.

Because of this I lost most of my interest in the game, even though it has the potential to be one of the most thrilling games of all time.

Rage quitting was never THAT big of a deal, because if they were douches, they were going to leave anyway. By the final 3 chapters in a campaign you usually have a solid team that's dedicated to finishing it up.

I think I've had a total of maybe 3 games were the 8 people that started the game were the same 8 people that finished a game. Maybe this is just over xbox live. Xbox live seems to be fluttered with little kids more then PC games.

I just lasted 30 minutes in the sewer level, I couldn't believe my eyes when someone showed me the glitch lol. Its so insane. How does someone mess around long enough to do such things in such a order, to lead to a glitch? It cracked me up, we held up in the safe room (in survivor mode) of 30 mintues! It was pretty fun.

There's still several glitches in survival modes.

I'm supposed to be working, but at Microsoft's show at E3, a Left 4 Dead sequel was just announced: http://kotaku.com/5274238/crackdown-2-left-4-dead-2-announced

Left 4 Dead 2 features an all-new cast, will include a range of melee weapons (like frying pans and chainsaws!) and will be out on November 17.

That is some fantastic news. And November, that's right around the corner.

UPDATE, Valve's news release on it: http://store.steampowered.com/news/2552/

I might be alone but I find this paragraph a bit provocative considering the little support L4D received after release:

http://store.steampowered.com/news/2552/ said:
"Left 4 Dead was backed by our most aggressive advertising campaign to date, and resulted in a top 5 showing on two platforms during holiday 2008," said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. "Left 4 Dead 2 is a larger game and will be supported with even more consumer and retail advertising programs than the original."

"The first L4D was a commercial success because of the massive advertisement, so since we're planning even more advertisement for L4D 2 it will surely be even more of a success!" It's also part of marketing to know when to keep certain things for yourself instead of being blatant about them.

The sad part is, I don't think most people realize how undersupported the game is, or the untapped potential of the game. L4D quickly became a mass-marketed action game by 360 owners. Im sure they steamrolled over it in a few weeks then moved on to the next game. But us poor PC owners held on for months and months, waiting for more campaigns ... for nothing!

In brief, the game's lack of support did not affect its overall marketability, as it continues to be a top seller 8 months after its release.

It feels like L4D was just a demo for L4D2. No SDK (just beta so far), no decent matchmaking, no DLC besides Survival. Compared to TF2, it has no support whatsoever.
The game isn't even 1 year old (it retailed at full price) and they're already coming with a sequel! Fuck that. The community has the right to be pissed.

Indeed, but instead we're all just psyched about getting something new. We're more like junkies than gamers at this point.

Ah lol, no no no, I know there is glitches, I was aware. Putting explosives under a box, blowing it up to a position that allows you to jump into a pipe and make it back to a safe room, I just didn't expect.

Awww, they should have kept the same characters, but hopefully there is an actual story line in the game because the 1st part was just basically playing through stages until you escape in the final stage

The lack of an explicitly stated story was never a problem for me. I enjoyed the fact that Valve subtracted that traditional aspect and instead jumped headfirst into each scenario. Reminds me somewhat of that "just go with it and you'll love it in the end" storytelling in Super Metroid. I really don't need a patronizing and predictable backstory for each character. I get it -- they eventually banded together to survive a zombie onslaught. Check. Now, onto the killing.

But yeah, from the trailer, it looks like there are clear shots of in-game cutscene-looking moments.

Here's some more info on the game, including a description of the new special infected class we see at the end of the trailer, the "Charger."

http://kotaku.com/5276527/left-4-dead-2-extended-impressions
Designed to break up tightly packed groups, then pounce upon one of the Survivors like a Hunter, the Charger is big and bulky, like a Tank, but doesn't take nearly the amount the amount of gunfire to take down.

They're a little more challenging to kill. Shoot off an arm and they won't just lie down. They'll keep coming. Add to them the new regular Infected that wear haz-mat suits won't burn when you set them alight with a Molotov cocktail and the rank and file zombie becomes a more serious challenge.
I lold at the last part :ganishka:

Yea I actually agree with you it was pretty awesome even without a story line but I just would like a good story line to a zombie game

Meh, this "sequel" sounds more and more like something that could easily be added as DLC. I hope they'll offer a discount for L4D owners or i won't buy it.

So it looks like people are trying to start a boycott for L4D 2. I just saw about 10 such videos on Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u4rNH9cqIM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koM4wyfCA_c

And I have to admit that when I read something like this:

So, we’ve made a number of releases on the PC, and we made a pretty big release on the 360 in terms of the DLC, and we were able to get out for free which I thought would pretty cool, and it was not an easy thing to pull off. Beyond that, we plan to continue updating Left 4 Dead. We’re not done with that title, it’s not over. The SDK stuff just came out. I think we mentioned to RPS that if you’re using the SDK and making maps for it, those will work for L4D2 as well. We are trying to keep the community together – we’re going to be doing more stuff about keeping the community together as we get closer to launch.

I can't help but wonder why they didn't just call it an expansion pack.

It really pisses me off when he talks about the "DLC" for Left 4 Dead. It was a new game mode that used EXISTING MAPS with one very, very small additional map. That's it. That's it and that's all. No new zombies, no new weapons, no new players, no new campaigns, etc. etc. That was not DLC. That was a patch.

I hope this gets big enough for Valve to take notice. Their support towards this game was a complete letdown. Specially considering it's potential.

They started working on L4D2 right after the release of L4D. That makes me believe they crippled the game at launch so they could release that pseudo-DLC later on.

EDIT: Yep, it's getting some attention alright:

http://kotaku.com/5281374/l4d-sequel-met-with-much-more-than-indifference

And now, it's somewhat official:

No new content in the making for L4D1!
So, for those of you who argued that they'd probably continue making new content for L4D, it looks very grim:

Quote:
But what about Left 4 Dead, which some players expect to fall by the wayside in the wake of its sequel?

Leonard declined to commit to there being more Valve-created content for the game, instead pointing out some upcoming functionality tweaks and the potential in user-created levels for the PC version. "We are doing updates across the summer, adding new matchmaking features, and new features to facilitate user maps after the SDK is out," he said. "Certainly, user maps will be part of the ongoing Left 4 Dead 1 experience.
