Movies, TV, Books & Music / Twin Peaks Returns
« on: May 22, 2017, 03:02:02 PM »
So I just watched the first two episodes of the new Twin Peaks (pats 1 and 2 together, making a full hour and half long episode) and without reveling anything or spoiling anything I think it's safe to say that this was exactly what the fans were waiting for. Even if all you want is some classic Lynch storytelling, its all there. I dont think anyone will be disappointed.

Movies, TV, Books & Music / The Best Movies to Watch When Snowed In
« on: January 29, 2016, 08:50:50 PM »
Because of the snow storm last week I snowed in for a few day (it actually wasn't that bad) but I was well prepared to stay in my pj's, drink some hot coco (with vanilla ice cream, as is tradition in this house) and watch movies nonstop. As mentioned in the "weekend" thread, power did not go out, so I was good to go.

Going through my massive blu-ray and dvd collection I started to realize there's some truly awesome movies that perfectly compliment the weather outside. Here's my own recommendation.

1. Jeremiah Johnson - This is a no brainer. It's old but stands well the test of time. Highly recommend it to anyone that has not experienced this classic.

2. The Thing - Another no brainer.

3. The Great Silence - Arguably Sergio Carubucci's (the other Sergio) greatest Italian Western set in the snow with a silent protagonist and a bleak ending.

4. Lone Wolf and Cub: White Heaven in Hell - I recently dug up my collection of LWaC movies (six in total) and I distinctly remember the final film having an epic snow setting. The ending to this movie has got to be one of the biggest and most insane final battles to ever put to film, along the lines of The Wild Bunch. Itto takes on entire army on a the slopes of mountain.

Those are the ones I watched over the weekend. Other movies that instantly come to mind when I think of snow are Doctor Zhivago and Fargo. I also recently saw The Revenant and Hateful Eight at the theater too. Those would both be worthy additions.

News & Not News / Alan Rickman Dead at 69

Also cancer. What a shame. Great actor. So many memorable roles. I just watched Die Hard over the Holidays weekend too.

Movies, TV, Books & Music / Westworld HBO miniseries
« on: July 24, 2014, 01:40:30 AM »

I was surprised to hear about this. First Dark Tower now Westworld? If nothing else HBO has shown some ballsy initiative when it comes to their miniseries'.

Video Games / Dead Space 3
« on: January 22, 2013, 08:41:57 PM »

I Figured I'd start a thread since I'm sure many of us here will play it. I'm really looking foward to this since I enjoyed the first 2 so much. I'm on the fence about the co-op though. On the one hand, I might prefer my Dead Space to be more like the first one. A silent and secluded hero. But on the other hand I do love co-op and Dead Space might provide a cool backdrop for some good two player action. I just hope it's not too actiony.

They did add this cool Mass Effect armour though. All you need is a Mass Effect 3 save and you can unlock it.

Shootin' the Breeze / Addiction
« on: January 14, 2012, 10:19:34 AM »
Post your addictions. It can be anything. From the comical to the serious.

For me it's more serious and the reason I feel i can comfortably talk about it now is because it's all in the past. As most probably don't know I struggled with serious opiate addiction from 2006 to July of 2011. I can now happily say that for almost six months now I've been clean as a whistle and I'll never go back. But for over five years that wasn't the case. It started off with taking some vicoden or oxycontin for fun once in a while. Before long it was every day. In the last 3 years before I managed to quit it was a daily routine of crushing up 80mg oxy and snorting it with 2 mgs xanax every morning and again later if I could afford it. I was spending at least $60 a day most of the week. I figured I spent well over 10 grand in my last few years.

I know this is graphic but talking about it helps and i really don't have many people to openly talk to about it other than close friends and family, but sometimes they aren't always available. Anyway, the reason I decided to quit (which seemed completely out of the question for years) was because several bad things happened to people I know. A fiend and co-worker was fired for it, a person who I dealt with died of an accidental overdose and a good friend of mine was arrested and sent to prison. All these terrible things happened quickly to people around me and keep in mind I'm a very nerdy, very white kid from the suburbs of New England. I haven't had a very hard life, so stuff like this is pretty intense for me. So i finally decided to quit and with a lot of moral and emotional support I stocked up on vitamins, medicines and supplements to help with withdrawal. Since July I haven't touched the stuff. In fact I haven't smoked or even drank (except a glass of champagne or wine) since. It's all a thing of the past as far as I'm concerned. Living a pill free life is so strange since it was something that I had lived with daily for almost 6 years.

Quitting wasn't easy but what was harder was actually getting the motivation and determination to want to quit in the first place. Even now that I'm free though, I still get intense cravings at least once or twice a week. I've been told it might never go away. I still take suboxin which is something like a fake opiate that blocks the receptors in the brain so that even if I gave in and used again it would be ineffective. It's not as dangerous but it's still something I'd like to not have to take twice a week (plus it tastes gross. You have to keep it under your tongue to dissolve). But like I said talking helps and if anyone else ever has or is going through something like this please be comfortable asking questions or discussing. I'm pretty much an expert on the subject.

This is a different topic than usual on these boards and if the admins feel it's inappropriate I understand. I just really felt like talking about it. But like I said share any of your addictions of any sort.

Movies, TV, Books & Music / The Hobbit (Movie)
« on: November 28, 2011, 11:14:10 PM »

Figured there should be a thread for it since I'll be wanting to discuss it for the next year until it's release.

First thing - The first teaser trailer should be released soon, around Christmas, most likely before Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of TinTin which is out on the 21st of December.

Also, Elijah Wood is returning for the role of Frodo. Now at first I was a little pissed. Like of course they had to bring him back somehow ... typical. BUT, I've since changed my opinion. It doesn't bother me because I'm actually interested in the way they plan to incorporate him and tie the the two series together. I believe The Hobbit will open with Frodo reading "There and Back Again", the book written by Bilbo Baggins that was shown in the LOTR movies, and that's how Bilbo's story will start. Elijah has already said that he has finished shooting his scenes and they were very brief so I'm sure it'll be a very quick scene, probably in the one location.

Movies, TV, Books & Music / The return of Beavis and Butthead
« on: October 24, 2010, 01:56:40 PM »

While I can't help but be excited, I also think it could end up being bad and just not funny. It's a classic show from the 90's, it could be really great or really lame.

Manga Mausoleum / Your Favorite Episodes
« on: August 10, 2010, 10:12:35 PM »
I know it's hard my fellow posters, but what some of your favorite episodes? Obviously there are no "bad" episodes in Berserk, but I'm curious to know which ones had more of an impact on you personally or which ones always stood out in your mind. For me, in volume 8, episodes 34-36 titled Morning of the Journey (or Morning of Departure in Darkhorse) always was one of my favorites. Not just because of the fact that Guts and Griffith faced each other in a duel for a second time, but because of the way it is illustrated. It is just such a dramatic scene without being over dramatic in any way. It starts with Guts and Judo talking in the bar and ends with Guts walking away from the Hawks. The whole sequence is so well done, with all the major characters involved having great dialog (well, not Pippin of course). The whole Golden Age Arc is great but it is at that moment where I always get that "oh boy, shit just got real" moment. I almost wish I could erase all my knowledge of Berserk just so I could read that scene again fresh. It's the defining moment, the catalyst for everything that is to come in the next few books, and it's masterfully done.

Does anyone else get shivers down their spine from the pure amazingness of a particular episode?

Looks promising!

Character Cove / Zondark Vs. Samson Vs. Bazuso
« on: June 13, 2010, 03:44:44 AM »
Before they met Guts, all three of these mighty titans were men that most aspired to be. If they were to fight each other in an epic gladiatorial duel to the death, who would be victorious? Would it be...

1) Captain Zondark (pre quasi-apostle status) This massive capt. wears full body and facial armor and swings a mighty war hammer. Plus he works for the Count and surely has been hunting heretics for a long time.

2) Samson. He's the little brother of Adon and second in command of blue whale ultra heavy armored fierce assault annihilation knight corps.  His armor is three times ordinary plate! and his iron ball can smash a water buffalo's skull in ONE STRIKE! (according to Adon)  He's also armed with the Coborlwitz family pride!

3) Bazuso, or should I say, The Gray Knight Bazuso, as he's known in legends. This is the man who killed thirty, thats right THIRTY MEN, at ONCE! *Also know to have killed a bear unarmed*  This man is so legendary and dangerous, killing him could earn the average mercenary half a years wages! Weapon - big as shit axe.

Berserk Miscellaneous / 100 things I learned from Berserk
« on: June 03, 2010, 04:22:08 PM »
Ok so here's something to try and kill time until the next episode. You don't have to include pics but I was bored and had time so here goes!

100) Midland architect's can ruin otherwise nice portraits with creepy dolphin statues.

99) Just because you're on the same team as Carcus doesn't mean he won't admit to aiming arrows at you from time to time, especially if he doesn't like your face.

98) Even the battle ready Guts can be distracted by a topless Casca.

Shootin' the Breeze / Christmas 2009
« on: November 24, 2009, 09:41:10 AM »
Ok people what's everyone asking for this year?

-New 360 (i think it'll be $100 on black friday)
-Gift cards for clothes and such
-Manga, Blame and Vagabond
-District 9 and Inglorious Bastards on dvd
-Hopefully some money to get my car fixed since it's too much to ask for a new car.
- and finally my usual subscriptions to AAA service and Rolling Stone magazine renewed.

I think there is room for more, any ideas?

Movies, TV, Books & Music / What are you watching? (television thread)
« on: October 05, 2009, 04:04:09 AM »
I've been on the fence about creating a this thread for a while now but I finally gave in do to watching the new Curb your Enthusiasm episode tonight. I do believe this is one of the best and funniest shows on tv and this new season is kind of exploding with star power and irony. The arc for this season is that Larry David, in an attempt to win back his wife Cheryl, decides to bring back together the cast of Seinfeld for a special reunion show. Now in reality, this is the first time Jerry, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards will appear together on tv again, and even more, on the exact same sets that have been dug up and with many of the same crew, including director Larry Charles (Borat/Bruno). I know not everyone is a Seinfeld fan but it's pretty cool to see them coming together after 11 years of never having any interest in doing a reunion show. And normally they never would, but in the context of Curb's storyline, the Seinfeld reunion will be a reality, but still in a unique way since the actors will be in character playing themselves... playing their Seinfeld characters. Brilliant! It was also funny to see David Spade and Meg Ryan unexpectedly, and my favorite actor christian Slater is i guess going to be in next weeks episode. If your unfamiliar with Curb you should know that all the guest stars play themselves, usually picking on their own celebrity.

Now I'm not really big on watching television, but I do follow some shows. Right now my tv schedule for things i can't miss goes like this,
Sunday- Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO)
-The Soup (E!)
Thursday- The Office (NBC)
Friday- Real Time With Bill Maher (HBO)

I tried following Entourage this season but it was terrible, worst season yet, went absolutely nowhere.  I also tried getting into True Blood, though i missed to many episodes that I'm totally lost in the plot. Any True Blood fans?

Well anyway I'm interested to hear what anyone else is watching. Go ahead and post your weekly programs and lets discuss  :serpico:

EDIT- Forgot to mention that the new South Park season kicks off next wednesday, can't wait

Movies, TV, Books & Music / New on DVD thread.
« on: September 09, 2009, 03:33:32 PM »
Since there isn't a general thread about movies or dvds that are already out or just being released, well here ya go. Post your recent or favorite dvd purchases. I just picked the Office season 5 (u.s. version) which just came out a few days ago. Not as good as the first 3 seasons but still totally hilarious. I can't seem to watch enough of this show.

Berserk Miscellaneous / Scene it? Official Berserk Picture Game!
« on: May 11, 2009, 09:32:59 AM »
Think you know the manga like the back of your hand? Test your Berserk memory here!

Ok guys here is how it goes- You need to name the episode, page number, and panel of the given picture. If you are correct on all accounts then you in turn must post a picture or part of a picture from a scene in any volume of Berserk that you think will be difficult for others to locate. No scanlations, obviously. I'll start it off.

Ok tell me where this good looking fella came from. And remember, you must pinpoint the exact location of the images!

Video Games / Games for '09
« on: December 01, 2008, 06:55:03 PM »
There are some obvious carryovers from 08 like Resident Evil 5 and FFXIII. But some others that I'm personally waiting for like

Star Ocean: The Last Hope

Halo Wars

and I'd like too point out this little - Edge of Twilight find Too early to tell if it will be any good but I'm interested after a comparison to soul reaver.

So what else will you guys be waiting for during the new year?

I know there are some other music threads where people just list all their favorite heavy metal bands but I want to actually discuss the music. I love music and I'm sure some of you do too. I remember CnC saying a while back he was listening to the new arcade fire album Neon Bible which is amazing. I started listening to the arcade fire wayyy before they exploded into mainstream radio play and it's nice to see them grow in popularity. But I must tell you that if you haven't heard their old cd Funeral you just haven't heard the arcade fire at their best. Before anybody I knew personally was aware of arcade fire I was already listening to funeral and it was one of the greatest cd's ever. I highly reccomend it, at least listen to the last song called in the back seat . So has anyone else been blessed enough to have heard funeral? And what else are you listening too? I love being turned on to  new music.  I just ordered the reissue of another one of my favorite albums of all time the microphone's glow part 2.  beautiful album.

Video Games / Games for 2008
« on: December 16, 2007, 01:31:02 AM »
I don't have time right now to post links for the trailers but I will later. These are just some games coming out next year that I can't for. There coming out before April too.

Dynasty Warriors 6-
Lost Odyssey
The Force Unleashed-
Fable 2
kingdom under fire-circle of doom
and Devil May Cry 4-

Never been a fan of Devil may cry but it looks fucking cool. The trailer was better than most movie trailers. Also never liked turok but I got to say it looks kool. Dynasty warriors is just one of my favorite series. I know the games are repetitive and 2,3,4,5 are mainly the same levels and characters, but dw2 was the first game I got when I got my ps2 for Christmas many moons ago. Me and my friends used to play out in the back yard and pretend we the heroes from the game whose names we couldn't pronounce. So DW holds a special place in my heart. The force unleashed  looks sick too. Supposed to be next gen, all new technology from lucas arts. I don't really like star wars games but who knows, might be fun.

News & Not News / G-Tech Pays RI State Half A Million
« on: December 15, 2007, 04:03:04 AM »

It's not really an amazing story or anything but it was kind of a big deal for me because I work for g-tech at twin river casino.  Me and the other technicians always wondered why this one slot machine stopped working at about 12 noon every day. We realized that it was actually just crammed full of money, but it usually takes three or four + days to fill the cashbox. So we thought it was weird but what could we do, we figured it was a popular game. Come to find out months later that the programming was wrong and instead of 2 cents = 1 credit it was 1 credit = 2 cents. So these people got away with putting in a 50 dollar bill and just cashing out for 100. Do that for 6 hours a day for a couple months and you make some serious money. So we were all investigated and questioned because most of us have worked on that machine before and our names were in the log book. Luckily no one was fired, but the last couple of months have been stressful. I just can't believe the lucky shit who made out with all that dough.

Video Games / Lost Odyssey
« on: December 06, 2007, 11:52:19 PM »
This games looks awesome. A little like FFanasy perhaps, but it still seems like it'll be one of the better rpg's for the 360. All we got is blue dragon and eternal sonata, both awesome games, but both have characters designed to look like 12 year olds. Finally something a little more mature. I think it's set to be released February 2008

Anyone else like eternal sonata and bluedragon btw.

Berserk Miscellaneous / Zeromus and meeting other Berserk fans
« on: October 10, 2006, 09:16:03 PM »
This was very exciting for me. Does anyone who saw Clerks II remember the scene where some Lord Of the Rings Fanatic walks into Mooby's and after noticing the cashiers Ring necklace, breaks out the little speech about "one ring to rule them all" and then they embrace each other, yea we'll that kinda happened to me the other day.  Living in the smallest state in one of the smallest towns, it's very rare to come across another Berserk fanatic, theres just a handful of kids that even read manga out here. But I was working at stop & shop (cashier) the other day and some guy came through my line and I noticed the Brand tattoo on the back of his neck like guts. I could not fucking believe it, that shit never happens, not to me anyway.  I was like "YES" and he was all "Yea dude" we talked briefly and I noticed his shirt said Godhand in a cool calligraphy going down the side and he told me that he was in a band (Zeromus) and they are in the process of making skateboards and t-shirts for their band and what not. He gave me the website and supposedly soon they will have berserk related merchandise up, right now it's just band stuff. They might just make the "Godhand" shirts for themselves, not sure. I haven't heard their music yet but judging from the track titles (Nosferatu) their music seems to be heavily tied with Berserk. So just throwing this out there and also wondering if this has happened to anyone else. Where you meet a total stranger and realize they have a Berserk tattoo or something. I wanted a line to recite to this guy like in Clerks but nothing came to mind quick enough. any ideas? (that's kind of  a joke because it would be kinda gay but still let's agree with one just in case any of us run into each other someday.)   "In this world..."

Creation Station / Oburi's Colors
« on: October 06, 2006, 09:24:27 PM »
Okay this is my first ever attempt to even try to mess around with coloring, I didn't want to make a new thread (thanks CnC) so I'll stick it here under the assumption that people are going to give me pointers or instructions on wtf I'm doing. Anyway I know these colors suck, I made this guy look like the flamboyant leader of the gay Kushan squad but I was just messing around with colors and had nothing for reference. I am a complete amateur at this, I basically just learned how to use photoshop within the last hour but theres still much I don't know. Anyway it's berserk related so...

Compared to CnC and the others this looks like some 5 year old kid did this with a crayon (it's not even finished) but it's just a first attempt, I'm sure I'll get better.
