Well the first Baldur's Gate used AD&D rules and those that followed just went with newer ones. But the series was always D&D-based. Baldur's Gate itself and the Sword Coast are part of the Forgotten Realms.

Yeah, I know.

Re: Who play's RPG's? What's your favorite?

I don't know if it's my favorite but lately I've been playing Star Control 2 too much for my own good.

Check it out, available free: http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

Best game ever, besides 2 that is. I still think it's superior to the later D and D based versions.

Why did you make an incorrect statement if you knew it?

Nothing incorrect about my statement, as far as I can tell. I always new that BG 1 and 2 were based on D and D. I wasn't trying to contrast it with later versions, in the sense that BG 1 and 2 weren't based on d and d, just that it's superior to the ones that were STILL based on D and D, though the exact rules on rolls and whatnot had changed, as well as class caps, classes, etc--really, just an issue of how you read it.

Then I'm afraid you need to revise your English lessons.

Your sentence clearly implies that the first game wasn't D&D-based, otherwise you'd just need to say "I still think it's superior to the later versions". The "D&D" part of the sentence is completely useless if you know that all the games in question are D&D-based, and like I said, it implies the later versions are different (and inferior) because they're D&D-based, unlike the first.

It's not an issue of how you read it, you just wrote something confusing. That or more simply, you had forgotten that the first Baldur's Gate was D&D-based but don't want to admit it (and really, the changes in the rules between BG and its sequels are meaningless). Anyway I'll go ahead and believe you, this is probably just a misunderstanding.

Oh man I loved all those old Sierra games. It's not an RPG but growing up I always used to play Space Quest.

Nothing like the classics :)

Re: Who play's RPG's? What's your favorite?

I remember watching my best friend play all those Sierra games on his computer, Quest For Glory being one of them.
There was this awesome Space Game, where you start out in a dump or something???

EDIT: So, i re-read the post above mine. Space Quest this must be!

There was another about the Knights of the Round Table, but I can't remember its name. Probably something really obvious though.....

But recently, I haven't really had a chance to play an RPG. I have the circumstance of owning a GameCube. =/
Yeah, so Tales of Symphonia or something?
I did, however, watch someone play Oblivion recently!

does that count?? :judo:

Ooh, was it Kings Quest? Another classic :beast: Oblivion is fantastic, probably my favorite RPG (I haven't barely started the story, just wandering around doing as I please).

You're right. It was unclear. I play(ed) these games religiously, knowing they were D and D based.

Re: Who play's RPG's? What's your favorite?

Sadly, one of my favorite PC RPGs, Darklands, hasn't even been mentioned. Decent tunes, on-par graphics for its day(1992), nice battle controls, and it even taught me a little German geography. But, the game is so freakin' OLD that it won't run on anything but a 486 architecture. Sweet game, though. Other than that, I enjoy playing a paper-based RPG a friend of mine developed some years back. The opportunity for humor was very high and most of our characters had "the III" at end their names within half an hour-a testament to how loosely we were actually "role playing" and to how often we pissed off some creature that was much stronger than us.

FFVII stands for my favourite... :griff: - Sephiroth) vs :serpico: - Cloud Strife)
Then Xenogears with superb plot and atmosphere (kill those jumps!)
Then I bet FF IX, IV, VII, Breath of Fire 3, Breath of Fire 4. This is the way I feel. :griff:

Re: Who play's RPG's? What's your favorite?

I'm a big fan of Video game RPGs, never did get into the pen and paper or table top games.

Final Fantasy XII suprised me, it's got superb gameplay, great graphics, and a story tht dosn't insult your inteligence. I'm still angry with Final Fantasy X and X-2.

Final Fantasy IX is still my favorite though.

Zelda: Twilight princess is amazing, as is Oblivion, though I hesitate to call either RPGs.

Oblivion is definitely a RPG, and Zelda is definitely not one.

Re: Who play's RPG's? What's your favorite?

Lunar SSSC
FF VI
FF IV (great how Cecil can 'use' porn in this game - at least on the gba remake)
FF X (apparently I'm the only one who actually likes this game)
FF Tactics
Dragon Quest VIII (great how movement on the world map is virtually unrestricted)

in the middle of FF XII now and the gambit system is really damn convenient, plus no loading time for battles

Re: Who play's RPG's? What's your favorite?

Oblivion, with Knights of the Nine, and Titan Quest are what I play now. great games, and both have next expansion coming out next month. Excellent. :guts:

Why is there not more love for Earthbound!? Easily my favorite RPG, and one of the best written. Of course the Final Fantasy series was good in the SNES days (and decent on PSX), but that was my favorite game as a child.

Re: Who play's RPG's? What's your favorite?

Chrono Trigger, Okami, and Xenogears are tied for first. I also like Tales of Destiny and Tales of the Abyss.

Ôkami isn't an RPG, it's an adventure game...

Re: Who play's RPG's? What's your favorite?

Chrono Cross as of this moment remains my favorite.

Xenogears(I'm original, I know)
Final Fantasy Tactics (...reminds me of Berserk the more I play it through...w/e)
Final Fantasy XII
Valkyrie Profile
Star Ocean: Another Story
GOD OF WAR (..got ya)
Xenosaga Episode I and III
Random obligatory cult RPG in a mix of popular ones I'm forgetting

Ooh, RPGs...

Why is there not more love for Earthbound!? Easily my favorite RPG, and one of the best written.

I LOVE Earthbound! I credit Earthbound for getting me into the genre and for being probably the funniest RPG I've ever played. After that?

In descending order:

Star Ocean 3 - The battle system is so flexible, and I'm a battle trophy whore. Also, see banner. :p
Xenosaga II - Amazing storyline/characters, innovative and challenging battles. They totally copped out in XenoIII. :judo:
FF Tactics - I've never seen job classes done better, and the replay value is insane.
Suikoden V - The Suikoden games need so much more love. The gameplay was easy but fun, but the plot was simply the best RPG plot I've ever seen. I need to get my hands on the other games in this series.
FFVI - 'Twas the first FF game I ever played, and I have much loyalty to it.
Seiken Densetsu III - Good fun, cute characters, and I somehow never tire of replaying it, despite how simple the game is.
Tales of the Abyss - It's winning the war as my favourite Tales game. They're all really very much alike, anyway, but this one is very polished and quite in-depth, though Tales of Phantasia will always have a place in my heart.

I've begun resenting the FF series. They haven't churned out anything vaguely innovative in years; it's just the same thing with prettier graphics. After twelve numbered games, two crystal chronicles, and two tactics games... I'm so royally sick of it. I wish they would come up with some new ideas for once. :chomp:

I adore difficult RPGs, but they're often so hard to find, especially after you've played so many damn games and you know how to take advantage of them. -.-;

II imo was the "Cop out" of the series (and why it is at the bottom of the barrel for a lot of fans, including myself) the story side-lined to the URTVs, the production quality was noticeably lower than 1, the "Jashin"(sp) Kos-Mos figure, the turn to the (imo medicore) anime series, the attempt at "realistic" visuals, and the break battle system that over complicated things. There were so many things about II I wanted to like and love, but fell heavily short of my expectations. III was a welcomed "return" to me, and while I feel at points it was a cop-out, I felt it was more justified in that it tried to return its roots to actual Xenogears allusions and was also the premature demise of the series, again, namely due to II's lackluster performance.

Imo, Final Fantasy hasn't been "innovative" since Yoshinori Kitase and and Tetsuya Nomura became the scenario writer/artist duo. The duo I prefer is that behind tactics and XII, which is Matsuno and Yoshida. XII did so much innovation to the series, it took so many chances with the gameplay, battles, creative team, and overall feel of the game that (again, imo) was something rare to roughly a decade of a set style that had otherwise proved unpopular (compare Tactics and IX's success to mainstream FFs).

But otherwise I'm pretty much convinced XII will be my last numerical Fantasy, after hearing XIII will be Nomura-helm'd again and done in the same theme of Advent Children battles (a la Dragonball Z) I gave up on the franchise.
